The fastest Japanese road-car time established by the sources here is Nissan’s manufacturer-reported 7:08.679 for a 2014 GT-R Nismo fitted with track options. It was recorded in 2013, before the Nürburgring began officially recording, confirming and publishing lap records under its current approach. Toyota’s Lexus LFA Nürburgring Package was reported at 7:14.64, but on a shorter 20.6 km course; Honda’s 2023 Civic Type R posted 7:44.881 over the full 20.832 km lap and holds the front-wheel-drive category result listed by the circuit. Those distinctions matter more than a simple fastest-to-slowest list.
How the Japanese Nürburgring lap times compare
These are notable Japanese road-car results documented by the manufacturers and the Nürburgring, not an exhaustive ranking of every Japanese road car, race car or prototype. The times below come from different years and formats, so the table identifies course length and verification context rather than implying a like-for-like contest.
| Car and configuration | Lap time | Course and date | Driver and status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2014 Nissan GT-R Nismo with track options | 7:08.679 | Nordschleife; Nissan dates the attempt to September 30, 2013. Course length is not stated in Nissan’s cited report. | Michael Krumm; Nissan-reported historical result, not listed here as a post-2019 official record. Nissan report |
| Lexus LFA Nürburgring Package | 7:14.64 | 20.6 km; Toyota dates the test to August 31, 2011. | Akira Iida; Toyota-reported historical result. Toyota report |
| Honda Civic Type R, all-new model | 7:44.881 | Full 20.832 km lap; Honda announced the time in 2023. | Honda describes it as a front-wheel-drive-car record under the rules instituted in 2019; the Nürburgring lists Nestor Girolami and March 24, 2023. Honda announcement; Nürburgring record list |
| Honda Civic Type R development car | 7:50.63 | Honda says the pre-production test took place in May 2014; course length is not stated in its cited announcement. | Manufacturer-reported development-car lap; Honda said the technical specifications represented the final production car. Honda report |
The raw times should not be treated as a fully comparable leaderboard. Toyota explicitly gives 20.6 km for the LFA run, while the current official full lap is 20.832 km. A shorter course can produce a lower time without establishing that its car would be quicker over the longer layout.
Why the GT-R Nismo result needs a qualification
What Nissan reported
Nissan said Michael Krumm drove a 2014 GT-R Nismo with track options around the Nordschleife in 7:08.679 on September 30, 2013. The options included aerodynamic tuning, weight reduction and suspension tuning. Nissan described the result at the time as a volume-production-car lap record, with the qualification that the car had track options. That is Nissan’s historical claim, not a current-format Nürburgring confirmation.
How to interpret it
Among the Japanese road-car results documented here, it is the quickest reported time. But it predates the circuit’s current record process, and the cited Nissan report does not establish a directly comparable 20.832 km full-lap figure. It is therefore most accurate to call it the quickest Japanese road-car lap time found in these sources, rather than an unqualified present-day official record.
The LFA Nürburgring Package: quick, but on a shorter lap
Toyota reported that professional race driver and LFA test driver Akira Iida recorded 7:14.64 on August 31, 2011, in an LFA Nürburgring Package. Toyota specified a 20.6 km lap and standard Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tires. The package added track-focused aerodynamics and suspension and raised output to 420 kW (571 PS). Those details help describe the tested car, but the shorter stated distance prevents a fair direct comparison with a current full-lap result.

Honda’s Civic Type R results and the front-wheel-drive category
The 2023 full-lap result
Honda announced a 7:44.881 lap for the all-new Civic Type R and called it a front-wheel-drive-car record. Honda says the run used the official 2019 rules and the full 20.832 km lap. The Nürburgring’s listing identifies Nestor Girolami and March 24, 2023. This is a category result, not a claim that the Civic is the fastest Japanese car overall.
The earlier development-car lap
Honda reported 7:50.63 for a Civic Type R development car during pre-production testing in May 2014. Honda said its technical specifications represented the final production car. Because it was a development-car run from before the current official full-lap format, it should remain distinct from the 2023 category listing.

What the Nürburgring’s official timing approach means
The Nürburgring says that, as of the 2019 season, lap records are officially recorded, confirmed and published by the circuit. Its current Nordschleife record-drive full lap is 20.832 km, starts at the official line in track section T13 and uses a flying start. Attempts use calibrated measurement, notary supervision and vehicle-condition documentation; the circuit organizes entries into vehicle categories defined by Germany’s KBA. See the Nürburgring’s record methodology and listings.
This method gives current listed results a defined course and verification framework. Older manufacturer announcements remain useful records of what automakers reported, but they should be labeled by source and configuration rather than silently mixed with official entries.

What this ranking does—and does not—cover
The documented times support a comparison of several notable Japanese road-car runs, with clear qualifications about course length, vehicle configuration and record status. They do not establish a definitive all-time ranking of Japanese competition cars, prototypes and road cars together. A broader list would need a consistently defined class and course format for every entry.
