More than six decades later, Ford’s 2025 U.S. lineup spans 2.3-liter EcoBoost models, V8-powered GTs and the track-focused Dark Horse. The evolution is not a simple march from one body or engine to another: it is a story of Ford repeatedly offering distinct ways to experience the Mustang name.
How the Mustang began in 1964
Ford dates the Mustang’s public unveiling to April 17, 1964, at the New York World’s Fair. The original range offered a hardtop and a convertible, with a 2+2 fastback added for 1965. That early mix of recognizable styling and multiple body choices established a pattern that remains visible in the modern range. Ford’s official Mustang history recounts the launch and later milestones.
The car found buyers quickly. In its 2024 anniversary article, Ford said more than 418,000 Mustangs were sold in the model’s first year. That is a Ford-published historical figure, not an independently audited count presented here. Ford’s 2024 account of the Mustang’s 60th anniversary also reported more than 10 million sales across seven generations since 1964.
The 1969 Mach 1 marked a performance milestone
Among the heritage moments Ford highlights, the 1969 Mach 1 represents a stronger performance and customization emphasis. Ford says buyers could select an optional 428 Cobra Jet rated at 335 horsepower. That rating is Ford’s retrospective statement on its history page; it is not a figure independently checked against an original period specification for this article.

The Mach 1 is a useful marker of the Mustang’s changing character: the name could stand for more than an accessible, style-led coupe, while still sitting within a broader family of choices. The evidence here supports this selected milestone, not a complete technical account of every intervening generation.
What the 2025 U.S. Mustang lineup offers
Ford’s 2025 U.S. range separates the Mustang into three main model identities. The EcoBoost uses a 2.3-liter engine; the GT has a 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8; and the Dark Horse uses a modified Gen-4 5.0-liter V8. Ford rates the Dark Horse at 500 horsepower and 418 lb-ft of torque. These are manufacturer specifications for the 2025 model, not independent test results. Ford’s 2025 Mustang model information describes the range and Dark Horse equipment.

| 2025 U.S. model | Engine and Ford-stated output | Body styles listed by Ford | Emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
| EcoBoost | 2.3-liter engine; horsepower and torque are not stated in the cited material. | Fastback and convertible | A lower-tier entry to the Mustang range, with body-style choice. |
| GT | 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8; horsepower and torque are not stated in the cited material. | Fastback and convertible | V8 power within the core range. |
| Dark Horse | Modified Gen-4 5.0-liter V8; 500 hp and 418 lb-ft, as rated by Ford. | Coupe | Ford positions it around higher performance and track hardware. |
All three are rear-wheel drive, and Ford lists final assembly in Flat Rock, Michigan. The body-style distinction matters: the 2025 specifications list fastback and convertible configurations for EcoBoost and GT, while the Dark Horse is a coupe. For exact configuration and equipment details, consult Ford’s model specifications alongside the model pages; availability can vary by market and configuration.
What changed for the 2025 model year
Ford’s January 2025 model-year update says dual-zone climate control became standard on EcoBoost and GT, and those models include a one-year Connected Navigation trial. These are specific to Ford’s description of the 2025 model year; they should not be assumed to carry over unchanged to later Mustangs. Ford’s 2025 Mustang update provides the model-year context.

A six-decade identity—and what the sales claims mean
In its 2024 anniversary article, Ford said more than 10 million Mustangs had been sold across seven generations since 1964. Ford Blue Europe general manager Jon Williams described the car as having a particularly rich history and worldwide following, adding that few vehicles had been in continuous production for 60 years. That is Ford’s own anniversary statement, not an independent ranking or assessment.
Ford also reported in April 2025 that the Mustang was again the global best-selling sports car and America’s best-selling sports car, attributing those claims to S&P Global Mobility. They are Ford-reported market claims; the underlying S&P dataset is not evaluated here. Ford’s April 2025 sales announcement gives its attribution and framing.

Why the Mustang’s evolution still matters
The strongest through-line is choice. The 1964 launch paired a hardtop with a convertible, and the fastback followed for 1965. Ford’s account of the 1969 Mach 1 adds a performance-focused chapter; its 2025 range again offers distinct routes, from EcoBoost and GT body-style options to the V8 Dark Horse coupe. Those examples show how the Mustang name has covered different body styles and performance emphases over time without requiring every generation to be treated as the same car.
The available Ford material confirms seven generations in aggregate, but it does not provide enough consistent generation-by-generation specifications to support a full technical chronology here. What it does document is a durable identity shaped by Ford’s choices of form, engine and performance positioning, and a 2025 lineup that makes those differences explicit.
