Ford has ended production of the current all-electric F-150 Lightning. The October 2025 assembly pause was temporary, but Ford announced on December 15 that current-generation production had concluded; a June 2026 filing confirmed the discontinuation. Ford says a next-generation F-150 Lightning is planned with an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain, but it has not announced a specific availability date.
What happened to F-150 Lightning production?
The October 2025 pause and the later end of production were separate events. On October 23, Ford said it had good Lightning inventory and would restart the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center “at the right time,” without specifying when. That statement described the pause then in effect, not the final production decision. TechCrunch reported the October pause and Ford spokesperson Ian Thibodeau’s statement.
On December 15, Ford announced that production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning had concluded. Ford’s June 2026 filing later confirmed the discontinuation. Ford’s December announcement is the key update to the October “for a while” status.
Why did Ford pause assembly, and why was that not the whole story?
The October pause followed fires at Novelis’ aluminum facility that disrupted supply. Ford prioritized gas and hybrid F-Series production while it worked to recover lost output. TechCrunch reported Ford’s explanation that those trucks were more profitable and used less aluminum. Ford also said it planned to increase F-150 and Super Duty production by more than 50,000 trucks in 2026. Ford’s June 2026 filing describes broader EV-program changes. The company reported $481 million in second-quarter charges, primarily related to contractual commitments for cancelled EV programs, and said additional pre-tax expenses and cash expenditures connected with the announced actions could reach $2 billion. Those are Ford-reported amounts for the actions described in the filing—not costs per Lightning. Ford also reported that Model e wholesales fell 53% year over year in Q2 2026, primarily reflecting Mustang Mach-E production adjustments and the Lightning discontinuation; that is a segment figure, not a Lightning-only sales decline. What is planned for the next F-150 Lightning?
Ford says the next-generation F-150 Lightning will use an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) architecture: electric motors drive the truck, while a generator supports extended range. Ford estimates more than 700 miles of range and has highlighted towing, electric power delivery, and exportable electricity. The range is a Ford estimate, not an independently verified result from a production truck. Ford has said further details and launch timing will follow, and its owner page says a specific availability date has not been announced. The planned next-generation F-150 Lightning is not the same program as Ford’s Universal EV platform. Ford said the first vehicle on that platform would be a midsize electric pickup, with assembly planned to start in 2027. Ford has not identified that midsize truck as the next F-150 Lightning. What should current Lightning owners expect?
Ford says the current-generation Lightning is no longer available to order in its existing form, but support for owners remains unchanged. The company says software updates and replacement parts will continue. This is a company support statement, not a guarantee that every part will always be immediately available; owners should check with Ford or a dealer for model-specific service needs. Ford’s FAQ describes battery coverage as eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. There is no announced future availability date or price for the next-generation truck in the cited Ford materials. Remaining current-generation inventory, if any, depends on dealer stock and location. Compare a specific truck’s availability and terms with your needs; do not assume the future model will arrive on a particular schedule or at a particular price.
