Dodge’s Big Horn looked built to dominate the highway, but its imposing long hood sat ahead of a narrow, dated cab that drivers remembered as cramped, noisy, hot and difficult to see around. That mismatch helps explain why the tractor had limited appeal; it does not prove why Dodge left Class 8 production. Heavy Duty Trucking reports that Dodge built 261 Big Horns from 1973 to 1975, then exited the segment.
What was the Dodge Big Horn?
The Big Horn debuted in 1973 as Dodge’s Class 8 conventional tractor—a heavy-duty semi-truck with its engine ahead of the cab. Its broad front, rectangular grille and long hood gave it a commanding presence. But the cab behind that styling was much less imposing: Heavy Duty Trucking’s 2024 retrospective describes it as narrow and based on a design dating to the mid-1950s, itself updated from a cab first introduced in 1948. Why did the Big Horn fall short?
A large hood made visibility harder
The long hood was part of the Big Horn’s striking appearance, but it also obstructed the driver’s view. Former professional driver Jim Park, recalling his experience behind the wheel, said: “The enormous big horn hood was impressive looking, but it did little to improve the visibility from the driver’s seat,” as quoted by Heavy Duty Trucking. This is a driver’s recollection, not a measured visibility comparison with competing tractors.
The cab felt dated and uncomfortable
Park characterized the cab as small, noisy and behind the times, saying: “The cab was small and noisy, and very dated, even for that era. It looked like a hold-over from a ’60’s vintage pickup truck.” He also recalled heat from the engine intruding into the cab and a truck he drove without power steering. Those details describe his experience; they should not be treated as equipment specifications for every Big Horn.

- RECOMMENDED AGE: Suitable for ages 3 years and up, makes an ideal gift for truck enthusiasts and young collectors
The design contrast is the clearest supported explanation for the truck’s weak appeal: imposing exterior proportions could not make up for a cab drivers found cramped, noisy and hard to see from. The available account does not establish that these shortcomings alone caused the model’s short run.
What engines did the Dodge Big Horn have?
Heavy Duty Trucking reports the standard engine as a Cummins 250 diesel, with other Cummins powerplants and Detroit Diesel 8V-71 engines—naturally aspirated or turbocharged—also available. These engine details come from the retrospective, rather than a period factory specification sheet reviewed for this account.

Park recalled fleet examples with a naturally aspirated Detroit Diesel Series 71 rated at 238 hp and a Cummins N-Series engine he called a “shiny-290.” Those are recollections of trucks he encountered, not confirmation that every Big Horn had either engine.
How many Big Horns were built, and how many survive?
Heavy Duty Trucking reports that Dodge built 261 Big Horns during the model’s 1973–1975 run. The publication estimates that about 105 survive; that is an approximate figure, not a census of known trucks. Heavy Duty Trucking’s retrospective

Why did Dodge stop making semi-trucks?
Dodge left the Class 8 market in 1975, according to Heavy Duty Trucking. The available account does not document the company’s internal decision-making or identify a definitive business reason for the exit. It provides no factory sales figures, contemporary comparative tests, dealer-network evidence or Chrysler decision records. The Big Horn’s design problems make a plausible case for why drivers might have found it unappealing, but they cannot establish what caused Dodge to withdraw.
