The OCTA provided the basis for the competition Defender Dakar D7X-R, which won the 2026 Dakar Rally’s Stock class. In August 2026, Defender previewed a separate, limited-run road-legal model called Defender Dakar, developed from the winning racer.
How the OCTA became a Dakar racer
Defender announced on 20 January 2025 that an OCTA-derived vehicle would compete in Dakar and the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship from 2026. The race car, named Defender Dakar D7X-R, entered the production-based Stock category—not as an unchanged OCTA, but as a competition vehicle with modifications including a wider track, increased ride height, suspension changes and enhanced cooling. Defender’s original program announcement said three vehicles would contest Dakar, while two would enter the full W2RC season.
What the D7X-R achieved at Dakar
On 19 January 2026, Defender announced that Rokas Baciuška and co-driver Oriol Vidal had won the Dakar Stock-class title in the D7X-R. This was a Stock-class victory, not an overall Dakar Rally win. Defender later reported that its three D7X-Rs finished first, second and fourth in the class after 14 days of competition; the team recorded a 1-2-3 on 10 of the 13 stages, with 24,000km of combined distance across the three vehicles. What the road-legal Defender Dakar preview includes
At The Quail by The Peninsula during Monterey Car Week on 14 August 2026, Defender revealed a Design Preview Model of a limited-run road-legal Defender Dakar. The company describes it as an evolution of the D7X-R, retaining OCTA-derived body architecture, transmission and driveline, along with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. Freed from race regulations, the engine is announced at 635PS and 750Nm. These are preview specifications from the manufacturer, not independently tested figures.

The announcement describes a design preview, so these details should not be taken as a guarantee that every final production specification or regional version will be identical. Defender’s 14 August 2026 reveal is the source for the preview equipment and figures.

Not on the basis of the August 2026 announcement: Defender said reservations were planned to open from early 2027, with further technical details to be revealed at the 2027 Dakar Rally. The preview did not state a price or final production quantity, and it did not provide a firm delivery date or complete regional specification.
