2. Mazda MX-5 Miata: the cheapest lightweight performance car
The 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport starts at $30,430. It has a 181-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive, a six-speed manual transmission, and a manual-transmission curb weight of only 2,366 pounds.
Mazda does not publish a current official 0–60-mph time, so it is better judged by how it drives than by a single acceleration number. The Miata’s low weight, short dimensions, responsive steering, and manual soft top make it entertaining at speeds that would be impossible—or illegal—to enjoy in a much faster car.
Mazda lists a $1,235 destination charge, or $1,280 in Alaska. Also, although the Miata is often described as the cheapest sports car, the 2026 BRZ has the lower starting price.

The EcoBoost uses a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive. Independent tests generally put it in the mid-five-second range to 60 mph, but Ford does not currently publish a factory 0–60 figure. Any precise number should therefore be identified as an independent test result or estimate.
This is the least expensive way into the current Mustang’s long-hood driving position, rear-drive layout, styling, and comfortable long-distance character. The trade-off is obvious: the EcoBoost does not have the GT’s 5.0-liter V8 or its soundtrack.
7. Volkswagen Golf GTI: the quickest practical hot hatch near $35,000
