It produced a racing programme and a road-car prototype, but never became a regular production model—and the original plan to take it to Le Mans did not happen. The car’s legend rests as much on the gap between its enormous ambition and practical reality as on any horsepower figure.
What was the TVR Cerbera Speed 12?
The Speed 12 was TVR’s attempt to turn the Cerbera into an exceptionally powerful road car and a GT endurance racer. TVR’s heritage history places it within the company’s Wheeler-era lineup and traces its V12 to the AJP V8: TVR configured the engine as a V12, while one bank later served as the basis for the Speed Six. The project began in 1996 under the name Project 7/12, a reference to its seven-litre V12 concept, according to the TVR Car Club’s Speed 12 history. The eventual engine is listed there at 7,730 cc. A concept appeared at a motor show, and TVR pursued both a road-car version and a GT1 race car.
How powerful was the Speed 12?
The most defensible answer is that the engine was very large, but its often-repeated power figures are not confirmed specifications. The TVR Car Club lists the V12 at 7,730 cc and gives a broad 675–960 bhp range, while explicitly saying the full output was never proven on a suitable dynamometer. The club says two engine banks were separately tested at 480 bhp each; that does not establish the output of a complete engine installed in a car.

For the road-car version, the same club page gives an approximate figure of 800 bhp. It also lists 0–60 mph as 2.9 seconds with a question mark and marks the claim unconfirmed. These should be treated as reported estimates, not verified factory specifications or instrumented performance results. The range of figures reflects uncertainty about the project’s output, not a reliable set of trim levels.
Why was the Speed 12 cancelled?
The racing programme ran into practical and regulatory obstacles
TVR’s GT effort was aimed at Le Mans, but the Speed 12 did not race there. The TVR Car Club says the Speed 12 GTS later competed in the FIA GT Championship, while GT1 rule changes and development problems affected the programme. The intended endurance-racing ambition therefore did not turn into the Le Mans campaign the project had originally sought.

The road prototype was judged too extreme
The road-car programme also stopped before series production. In the club’s account, TVR owner Peter Wheeler drove a finished road prototype home, concluded it was unusable on the road and too powerful, and cancelled production; customer deposits were returned. The club attributes this comment to Wheeler: “I knew within 300 yards that it was a silly idea. Over 900bhp in a car weighing just over a ton is plainly ridiculous on the road.” The club does not identify the original interview, so the quotation is best understood as an attribution reproduced in its history, not a checked primary transcript. Was the Cerbera Speed 12 road legal?
There was a TVR-built road-use example, but that does not make the Speed 12 a production road car. The TVR Car Club says TVR advertised a Cerbera Speed 12 registered W112 BHG in 2003 and that Wheeler personally vetted a prospective buyer. It also says the car was assembled using a remaining shell from a GT racer. This history distinguishes a road-use car from the separate racing cars and the cancelled road-car production plan.

Top Gear reported that the one-off TVR-built road-use car sold on 20 May 2023 for £601,500. That is a dated sale result, not a current valuation. Top Gear’s 2023 sale report

The distinction matters because the name “Speed 12” is used for projects from different periods and companies. In particular, TR Cars’ modern Speed 12 Turbo is not the original Cerbera Speed 12 and its advertised figures should not be folded into the TVR car’s uncertain performance record.

Why the Speed 12 still fascinates enthusiasts
The Speed 12 captured TVR’s willingness to pursue an audacious idea with its own engine architecture, then exposed the difficulty of making racing ambition and road usability coexist. Its racing branch had to contend with development and rule changes; its road prototype was judged impractical by the person who had driven it. The result is a famous TVR project with a real racing history and a road-use example, but no ordinary production run.
The TVR Car Club also reproduces an Autocar line from 1997: “Perhaps an aspiring Speed 12 owner should strap himself into a racing seat and arrange to be ejected from the top of an erupting volcano.” It is a vivid period quip, quoted here as reproduced by the club rather than from the original magazine issue.
