The Busso V6 earned a lasting place in Alfa Romeo history, but “reliability nightmare” is too broad a verdict for an engine family that changed across decades and models. The documented concerns are more specific: belt slip in the 24-valve Alfa Romeo 164 and collapsed tensioner-bearing pulleys in some later 3.2-litre applications. Those are consequential timing-drive risks, not proof that every Busso is defective.
What the Busso V6 was—and why its reputation needs context
Giuseppe Busso developed the V6, which first appeared in the Alfa Romeo 6 when that model launched in 1979. Alfa Romeo says the engine remained in use across several models until 2006. The original 2.5-litre version was rated at 156 CV at 5,600 rpm and 224 Nm at 4,000 rpm; those figures describe that application, not the later Busso range. Alfa Romeo’s 2024 heritage history reports 12,070 Alfa Romeo 6 cars produced between 1979 and 1985.
Over its long career, the engine appeared in cars including the GTV6, Alfa 75, 164, 156, 166, GTV and Spider, as well as some Fiat and Lancia models. The versions differed in displacement and configuration; a technical-history survey lists 2.5-, 3.0- and 3.2-litre variants, but is a selection of applications rather than a complete fitment catalog. That variety matters: a claim about one installation should not automatically be applied to every Busso-powered car. Auto Italia’s technical history outlines the family and its specific timing-drive concerns.
The V6 was also one of the engine choices in the Alfa Romeo 156. Alfa Romeo’s retrospective records 680,000 total 156 sales between 1997 and 2005; that is the model’s overall sales figure, not a count of Busso-equipped cars. The 156 retrospective does not break out V6 sales.

Which Busso reliability problems are documented?
Timing-belt slip in the 24-valve Alfa Romeo 164
The technical-history account identifies slipping belts in the 24-valve Alfa Romeo 164 installation. A timing-drive problem can have serious consequences, but the cited account does not provide a failure rate or establish that all 164s—or all Busso engines—were affected.
Tensioner-bearing pulley failures in some later 3.2-litre engines
The same source describes a run of collapsed tensioner-bearing pulleys on later 3.2-litre applications. This is a specific reported problem, not evidence that every 3.2-litre engine failed or that other versions shared the defect. The article gives no fleet-wide statistics, repair-cost comparison or model-by-model failure ranking.

Auto Italia characterizes routinely maintained examples as capable of very high mileages, including a descriptive reference to a quarter of a million miles. It supplies no underlying dataset or method, so that should be read as the magazine’s characterization—not a guaranteed lifespan or population-wide reliability measure.
How to assess a Busso-powered car before buying
For an individual car, the engine label alone cannot tell you its condition. Assess the exact vehicle and engine application, then look for evidence that the relevant timing-drive work was carried out correctly and on schedule for that car.

- Identify the precise application. Confirm the model, year and engine version rather than relying on a generic “Busso” description.
- Ask for dated service records. Receipts and a coherent maintenance history are more useful than an unsupported assurance that the engine has been serviced.
- Check belt and tensioner work. Have a specialist establish what work is due or has been completed for the specific engine, including which parts were fitted and when.
- Use model-specific service information. Do not assume a single belt interval applies to every Busso, model year and market. The cited material does not establish one universal interval.
- Consider service capability and parts availability. A competent specialist familiar with the exact installation can help assess condition and plan maintenance. The available sources do not establish comparable repair costs or parts availability across models.
Where to find the right service information
Alfa Romeo’s Genuine Service portal says it provides repair cycles, vehicle technical data, guided diagnostic procedures, wiring information, scheduled service plans and technical bulletins. It describes the information as developed and certified by Stellantis, with subscriptions available by duration and brand. Use the handbook and service data applicable to the car’s model and market for actionable maintenance instructions; an interval for one application should not be transferred to another without confirmation.
