The 2024 Tahoe offers a choice of a 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8 or an available 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8, and seating for seven or eight depending on configuration. Car and Driver cites a maximum tow rating of 8,400 pounds for a rear-wheel-drive Tahoe with the 5.3-liter V-8; that figure does not apply to every engine and drivetrain combination. Best pickup direction for work and utility: Ford F-150 V-8 variants
The 2024 F-150 range includes a 5.0-liter V-8 and, in the Raptor R, a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8, according to Road & Track. That gives buyers distinct ways to prioritize conventional truck utility or high-output performance, but an engine alone does not make a truck the best choice. Tow ratings depend on configuration, so verify the rating for the specific cab, bed, drivetrain, axle, and equipment rather than borrowing a maximum from another F-150. Best high-output SUV alternative: Dodge Durango V-8 trims
The 2024 Durango is not one uniform V-8 proposition. Road & Track lists 360 hp for the 5.7-liter V-8 in the R/T, 475 hp for the 6.4-liter V-8 in the SRT 392, and 710 hp for the supercharged V-8 in the Hellcat. Those outputs belong to different trims, with different performance priorities; use the exact trim when comparing price, equipment, fuel use, or capability. Choose by mission, not by cylinder count
A V-8 badge does not tell you whether a vehicle suits your needs. Compare candidates on the same practical questions:
- Role: Decide whether you need a sports sedan, sports car, track-oriented coupe, performance SUV, family/towing SUV, or pickup.
- Exact configuration: Check trim and engine, then confirm drivetrain and equipment. Power and tow ratings can vary within a nameplate.
- Driving priorities: Acceleration and handling may come with a firmer ride, reduced visibility, or less convenient controls.
- Space and capability: Passenger and cargo room, towing, and payload are configuration-specific. Do not compare a vehicle’s maximum tow rating with another’s unless the configurations and rating methods are clear.
- Operating costs: Fuel use is a meaningful trade-off in some V-8 choices. The SQ7 evaluation notes thirsty fuel economy; for the Tahoe, Car and Driver contrasts the gas V-8s with the available diesel.
- Value: Consider the vehicle’s price and equipment alongside its intended use, rather than treating horsepower as a measure of value by itself.
Why this is a shortlist, not ten ranked picks
The available model-year-specific evidence supports several strong choices, but not ten equally substantiated recommendations. A V-8 option by itself is not proof that a vehicle belongs among the best.
