The Best Teslas of 2023: Model S, 3, X and Y Compared

The 2023 Model 3 was the best Tesla for most buyers, while the Model Y suited families, the Model S prioritized range and luxury, and the Model X delivered maximum utility and towing.

Short answer: The 2023 Model 3 was the best Tesla for most buyers, especially in Long Range AWD form. Choose the Model Y if family space, easier entry and crossover practicality matter more than sedan efficiency. The Model S was the range-and-luxury choice, while the Model X was the utility flagship for buyers who needed available three-row seating, maximum cargo flexibility or towing capacity.

Those recommendations are based on 2023 U.S. model-year data—not current Tesla specifications or today’s used-car prices. Tesla changed prices and equipment repeatedly during 2023, so a used buyer should verify the exact vehicle by VIN and build date.

2023 Tesla lineup at a glance

The four Teslas sold in the 2023 U.S. lineup served different purposes. The Model 3 was a compact sedan focused on efficiency and value. The Model Y added crossover height, cargo flexibility and available third-row seating. The Model S moved into premium-sedan territory with the lineup’s longest EPA range, and the Model X paired flagship pricing with the greatest passenger and towing utility.

Model Body style and seating 2023 EPA range Drive Base MSRP listed in 2023 data Best suited to
Model 3 Sedan, 5 seats 272–358 miles RWD or AWD $46,990 Value, efficiency and everyday driving
Model Y Crossover SUV, 5–7 seats 279–330 miles AWD in the government table; configurations varied $65,990 Families, cargo and easier entry
Model S Luxury hatchback sedan, 5 seats 405 miles AWD $104,990 Long-distance luxury and performance
Model X SUV, 5–7 seats 311–348 miles AWD $120,990 Maximum space, available three-row seating and towing

How to read these numbers: The range figures and historical base MSRPs come primarily from the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center model-year 2023 vehicle table, supplemented by contemporary 2023 reporting. A range span does not describe one trim; it reflects different drivetrains, batteries, wheels and production configurations. The prices are historical starting points, not current used-car values.

Best overall: 2023 Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD

The Model 3 Long Range AWD is the strongest all-around recommendation when a buyer wants a reasonably efficient Tesla with useful range, all-weather traction and a lower historical price than the Model S or Model X. It is the smallest and least expensive Tesla car in the 2023 lineup, and its smaller footprint makes it easier to maneuver and park than the larger models.

In the 2023 AFDC data, the Model 3 ranged from 272 miles for the RWD version to 315–358 miles for AWD variants. The model-year table lists five seats and a $46,990 base MSRP. Tesla’s 2023 configurations changed during the production year, so those figures should be treated as a model-year snapshot rather than a guarantee for every car registered as a 2023 Model 3.

Which Model 3 configuration should you buy?

  • Model 3 RWD: The value pick. It had the lowest range figure in the model-year data, but it retained the core Tesla charging and software experience while reducing the historical entry price.
  • Model 3 Long Range AWD: The best balance for most buyers who can afford the upgrade. It adds range and all-wheel drive, which are more useful for frequent road trips or winter conditions than the Performance model’s extra speed.
  • Model 3 Performance: The enthusiast choice. It prioritizes acceleration and handling over the most relaxed ride and maximum efficiency.

The Model 3’s other advantages are efficiency, strong acceleration, a large charging ecosystem and a lower ownership entry point than the S or X. Its compromises are a lower seating position, less cargo versatility than the Model Y and a smaller, less luxurious cabin than the flagship models.

Safety evidence for the 2023 Model 3

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the 2023 Model 3 within its Top Safety Pick+ coverage. The listed evaluations include Good crashworthiness results across the applicable frontal, roof-strength and seat/head-restraint categories, along with a Superior front-crash-prevention rating. IIHS notes that some ratings cover earlier tested vehicles or specified model-year ranges, so this should be understood as rating coverage—not as a claim that every individual 2023 car was newly crash-tested that year.

For used shoppers, a practical Model 3 accessory is 2023 Tesla Model 3 floor mats. Match the liner to the 2017–2023 Model 3 body and the vehicle’s exact configuration before buying; fitment is more important than the generic product name.

Best for families: 2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD

The Model Y is the practical Tesla. Its crossover body gives occupants a higher seating position and easier entry than the Model 3, while its taller shape provides more useful cargo flexibility. Some configurations offered seating for up to seven, although the exact row arrangement and available seating depend on the vehicle.

The 2023 AFDC data lists the Model Y at 279–330 miles of EPA range, with five-to-seven-seat capacity and a $65,990 base MSRP. The government table lists AWD, but Tesla’s configuration mix changed during 2023. Confirm whether a used example is RWD or AWD, whether it has five or seven seats, and which battery and hardware it received.

Which Model Y configuration makes the most sense?

For most families, the Model Y Long Range AWD is the most balanced choice. It provides more utility than the Model 3 without moving into the Model X’s much higher price and more complex flagship ownership category.

The Model Y Performance is quicker, but it is usually a weaker choice when the priorities are road-trip efficiency, ride comfort, cargo use and range. The Model Y’s strengths are its seating height, cargo access and family-friendly shape. Its drawbacks include a higher historical price than the Model 3 and less sedan-like efficiency.

Safety evidence requires a trim check

IIHS lists a 2023 Model Y AWD within its Top Safety Pick+ coverage and reports Good results in the principal crashworthiness categories, with Superior front-crash-prevention performance. However, IIHS specifically warns that this result does not automatically apply to the Model Y Long Range AWD or Performance trims. When safety ratings influence a used-car decision, identify the exact tested variant rather than treating every 2023 Model Y as having the same result.

Family buyers should also match accessories to the seating layout. If you are comparing 2023 Tesla Model Y floor mats, verify five-seat versus seven-seat fitment and check whether the package includes a cargo liner that matches the vehicle’s rear configuration.

Best for long-distance luxury: 2023 Tesla Model S

The Model S was the premium sedan in Tesla’s 2023 range and the model to choose when purchase price mattered less than long-distance capability, cabin quality and acceleration. The AFDC model-year table lists five seats, AWD, a 405-mile EPA range and a $104,990 base MSRP.

That 405-mile figure was the highest EPA range listed among the four 2023 Tesla models in the government data. It makes the Model S especially attractive to drivers who routinely cover long distances and want fewer charging stops than they would typically need in a Model 3 or Model Y.

Contemporary Consumer Reports testing recorded a 3.2-second 0–60-mph result for the tested 2023 Model S. That is a result from a particular road test, not a universal specification for every 2023 Model S, and it should not be confused with an EPA rating.

Why buy the Model S?

  • Range: Its 405-mile EPA figure gave it a clear model-year advantage in this comparison.
  • Luxury: It offered a more premium and quieter cabin than the Model 3.
  • Performance: It combined long-range travel with flagship acceleration.
  • Sedan driving: Buyers who prefer a lower, more car-like driving position could get premium performance without moving to an SUV.

The trade-offs are substantial. The Model S cost far more than the Model 3, is physically larger, and can expose an owner to more expensive repairs and replacement parts. If you do not need its extra range or luxury positioning, the Model 3 Long Range AWD is generally the more rational purchase.

The safety sources reviewed for this comparison support IIHS award coverage for the 2023 Model 3 and a specific 2023 Model Y AWD variant. They do not establish an equivalent 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick award for the Model S, so it should not be described as having received the same award.

Best for space and towing: 2023 Tesla Model X

The Model X was the largest and most utility-focused Tesla in the 2023 lineup. It offered five-to-seven-seat configurations, AWD and an EPA range span of 311–348 miles. The AFDC table lists a $120,990 base MSRP, making it a very different ownership proposition from the Model Y rather than simply a larger version of it.

Contemporary specifications reported up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity and up to 348 miles for the Long Range version. Those capabilities make the Model X the right Tesla for buyers whose requirements include available three-row seating, maximum cargo flexibility, easier passenger access or towing.

Why buy the Model X?

  • Passenger utility: It was the Tesla to consider when available three-row seating mattered.
  • Cargo flexibility: Its larger SUV body better suited bulky loads and family equipment.
  • Towing: Its reported maximum capacity of up to 5,000 pounds separated it from the Model 3, Model Y and Model S.
  • Flagship experience: It provided a premium SUV alternative to the Model S.

The Model X’s disadvantages are its high purchase price, greater weight and energy consumption, and potentially more expensive tires, repairs and replacement parts. Its additional hardware and complexity also make a thorough used-vehicle inspection particularly important. For many families, the Model Y supplies enough space at a much more defensible price.

Range, charging and ownership reality

EPA range is useful for comparison, not a promise

EPA range is the fairest way to compare the four model families, but it is not a guarantee of highway range or of the number of miles available on a particular trip. Actual range changes with speed, weather, temperature, elevation, wind, tire and wheel configuration, battery temperature, state of charge and software.

The range numbers in the table should therefore answer a question such as “Which 2023 Tesla had the greatest standardized range?” They should not answer “How far will this used car travel at 75 mph in winter?” For that question, inspect the exact vehicle, its displayed energy consumption and its battery condition under comparable conditions.

Home charging options

Tesla’s current charging documentation describes three relevant home-charging approaches: the portable Mobile Connector, the permanent Wall Connector and the Universal Wall Connector. These are current product claims and should not be mistaken for 2023 vehicle-specific charging results.

  • Perfect for Display or Play: Ideal for building your Tesla collection or as a fun playset for kids and car lovers alike.
  • Mobile Connector: A portable option that Tesla says can add up to about 3 miles of range per hour from a standard household outlet and up to about 30 miles per hour from a suitable 240-volt outlet, depending on the vehicle and conditions. It is useful for portability or as a backup, but a regular household outlet is a slow charging solution.
  • Wall Connector: A permanent home solution that Tesla says can provide up to 44 miles of range per hour under suitable conditions. Actual speed depends on the vehicle, circuit, installation and charging conditions.
  • Universal Wall Connector: The flexible choice for a household that may charge both a Tesla and a J1772-equipped EV. Tesla says it supports both NACS and J1772 vehicles.

Readers planning emergency or portable charging can compare Tesla Mobile Connector accessories, but the adapter must match the outlet, amperage, connector and vehicle. Do not assume that a generic adapter or extension cord is safe for continuous EV charging; have the electrical setup evaluated when in doubt.

For a permanent setup, a Tesla Wall Connector can be more convenient than repeatedly using a portable cable, especially for a homeowner who charges overnight. A household with more than one EV should also consider the Tesla Universal Wall Connector because its J1772 compatibility can reduce the need for separate home chargers. Installation cost and product availability vary by location, and a qualified electrician should review the panel capacity, wiring, permits and required inspections.

Anyone comparing a Tesla charger installation should request a location-specific quote and confirm whether the installer is certified or otherwise properly qualified. Long wire runs, panel upgrades, permits and inspections can change the total cost significantly.

What to check before buying a used 2023 Tesla

Model year alone is not enough to identify the equipment in a 2023 Tesla. Tesla made running changes during the year, and configuration, battery, drivetrain, wheels and software can affect the vehicle’s capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify the VIN and build date. Use the VIN to confirm the exact model, trim and production history rather than relying on a seller’s abbreviated listing.
  2. Confirm the drivetrain. A Model 3 RWD is not equivalent to a Model 3 Long Range AWD, and Model Y configurations also varied during 2023.
  3. Check the battery and charging hardware. Ask what battery configuration the car has, which charging equipment is included, and whether any hardware changes or service campaigns apply.
  4. Review warranty coverage. Confirm the remaining vehicle and battery-related coverage directly against the vehicle’s records and terms; do not infer coverage from the model year alone.
  5. Inspect the vehicle history. Look for accident, flood, salvage, rental, commercial-use and repair records. Expensive body, suspension, wheel and electronic repairs can materially change the value of a used Tesla.
  6. Evaluate range in context. Compare the car’s displayed range and energy use only after accounting for temperature, battery state of charge, wheels, tires and recent driving conditions.
  7. Check recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA’s VIN-based recall resources and SaferCar tools for current recall information. A general internet search for the model is not a substitute for a VIN lookup.
  8. Verify seating and cargo equipment. This is especially important for the Model Y and Model X, where five-seat and seven-seat layouts can affect accessory fitment and practical utility.

Safety and driver-assistance cautions

The 2023 Model 3 and the specified 2023 Model Y AWD variant have strong IIHS safety evidence, but the ratings must be read at the tested-variant and model-year level. Do not transfer the Model Y AWD result automatically to the Long Range AWD or Performance trims, and do not assume the same award for the Model S or Model X without separate model-specific evidence.

Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features are driver-support systems, not proof that a Tesla is autonomous. The NHTSA recall material describes FSD Beta as an SAE Level 2 driver-support feature. The driver remains responsible for attention, supervision and control at all times, regardless of which software features are enabled.

Which 2023 Tesla should you buy?

Your priority Best choice Why What to accept
Lowest sensible entry price Model 3 RWD Lowest historical base MSRP and strong efficiency Less range than AWD versions and rear-wheel drive
Best all-around Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD Good range, traction, efficiency and value Less cargo and entry convenience than the Model Y
Family practicality Model Y Long Range AWD Higher seating position, easier entry, cargo utility and possible third-row capacity Higher price and less sedan efficiency than the Model 3
Maximum sedan range and luxury Model S 405-mile EPA range, premium positioning and flagship performance High price, larger size and more expensive repair exposure
Three rows, cargo or towing Model X Largest body, available seven-seat layout and up to 5,000 pounds of reported towing capacity Highest price, weight, energy use and complexity
Maximum acceleration Model 3 Performance or Model S Performance-focused versions offer the strongest acceleration character Price, efficiency, ride comfort or range may be less favorable

Final verdict

The 2023 Model 3 Long Range AWD is the best Tesla overall because it balances range, traction, efficiency, performance and historical purchase price better than the larger models. Choose the Model 3 RWD if minimizing cost is the priority.

The 2023 Model Y Long Range AWD is the better answer for families and anyone who values crossover access and cargo space. The Model S is justified by its 405-mile range and premium sedan experience, while the Model X earns its place only when its extra space, available third row or towing ability is genuinely needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the 2023 Tesla prices in this comparison still current?

No. The listed MSRPs are historical base prices from 2023 model-year government data. Tesla changed prices multiple times during 2023, and used-car prices vary by mileage, condition, location, trim and market conditions.

Which 2023 Tesla had the longest EPA range?

The Model S had the longest range in the cited 2023 U.S. data, at 405 miles. Actual driving range can be lower or higher depending on speed, weather, temperature, elevation, wheels, battery temperature and other conditions.

Was every 2023 Model Y rated Top Safety Pick+?

No. The IIHS result cited here applies specifically to a 2023 Model Y AWD variant and should not automatically be applied to the Long Range AWD or Performance versions. Check the exact tested configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Did every 2023 Tesla come with seven seats?

No. The Model 3 and Model S were five-seat vehicles in the cited data. The Model Y and Model X had five-to-seven-seat configurations, but seven-seat availability depended on the exact vehicle and configuration.

Is Tesla Full Self-Driving autonomous?

No. The researched NHTSA material describes FSD Beta as an SAE Level 2 driver-support feature. The driver must remain attentive and responsible for controlling the vehicle.

The Bottom Line

Pick the Model 3 Long Range AWD for the best overall balance, the Model 3 RWD for value, the Model Y Long Range AWD for family practicality, the Model S for long-range luxury, and the Model X for maximum space or towing. Treat every price as historical, every EPA range figure as an estimate, every Model Y safety claim as trim-specific, and every used-car listing as something to verify by VIN.
