The most useful product for digging a car out of snow is a compact vehicle shovel, paired with a traction aid such as traction mats or a small bag of sand or non-clumping cat litter. The shovel clears snow from around the tires and beneath the vehicle; the traction aid helps the tires grip once you have cleared a path. Neither guarantees recovery. If the car remains stuck or the location is unsafe, call for roadside assistance.
Which products help get a car out of snow?

These are practical selection considerations, not product-test results. AAA recommends keeping a well-stocked emergency kit in the vehicle (AAA Exchange winter driving tips).
How to use the shovel and traction aid
- Check whether it is safe to get out. Do not dig or push in a traffic lane or another unsafe place. If you cannot work safely, stay in the vehicle and seek help.
- Clear the exhaust before starting the engine. Remove snow covering the exhaust pipe to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide entering the vehicle.
- Dig out the tires and undercarriage. Clear snow higher than the vehicle’s ground clearance, remove snow from around and beneath the car, and make a path for the tires. AAA gives this clearing sequence in its stuck-car advice.
- Add traction. Place traction mats or abrasive material such as sand or non-clumping cat litter where the tires need grip. NHTSA and AAA identify these as emergency-kit options; neither source establishes a product that guarantees the car will move.
- Stop if it does not work. If the car remains stuck, contact roadside assistance rather than continuing an unsafe or exhausting recovery attempt. Winter storms can delay service (AAA Exchange).
What to do if you are stranded
- Stay with your car and avoid overexertion, as NHTSA advises.
- Make the vehicle visible to rescuers, while avoiding actions that put you in traffic or other danger.
- Be mindful of carbon monoxide: clear snow from the exhaust pipe before running the engine. NHTSA says to run the engine only sporadically and briefly, and only long enough to stay warm.
- Call roadside assistance if self-recovery fails. Allow for possible delays during winter storms.
Why a winter recovery kit matters
NHTSA reports that in 2023, 320 fatal traffic crashes and an estimated 22,293 injury crashes occurred when snow or sleet conditions were present at the time of the crash. These are road-safety context figures, not evidence that a shovel, mat or other product prevents crashes.
