For a road-first crossover, consider the Suzuki V-Strom 800; for more dirt-road capability, compare the Honda XL750 Transalp and Suzuki V-Strom 800DE; and for a more dirt-focused direction, look at the Yamaha Ténéré 700 or KTM 790 Adventure. The right choice depends on where you ride, how the bike fits you and what equipment is available in your market.
What “midweight” means for this shortlist
“Midweight” has no universal displacement cutoff. Here it means manageable, upright motorcycles with enough engine and chassis for regular highway use, spanning pavement-oriented crossovers to adventure bikes built for mixed surfaces. This guide focuses on the Honda XL750 Transalp, Suzuki V-Strom 800 and 800DE, Yamaha Ténéré 700 and KTM 790 Adventure. A 2025 comparison covered four of those models—the KTM, Honda, Suzuki 800DE and Yamaha—not every current middleweight, so its findings should not be read as a complete market ranking.
Triumph Tiger 900, Kawasaki Versys 650, Aprilia Tuareg 660 and other models may also suit the category, but their current specifications, prices and market availability need model-year-specific verification before they can be compared fairly here.
Choose by the riding you actually do
Mostly pavement, touring and everyday use
The Suzuki V-Strom 800 is the clearest road-oriented option in this group. Suzuki’s US 2026 listing specifies 19-inch front and 17-inch rear cast wheels and suspension tuned for road performance and comfort. Its genuine accessory list includes side and top cases, engine guards, a center stand, low- and high-profile seats, heated grips and fog lamps. Check fitment and availability for your model year and market.

Pavement with regular gravel or rough-road detours
The Honda XL750 Transalp and Suzuki V-Strom 800DE are useful candidates when you want more mixed-surface flexibility. Honda specifies a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked-wheel setup for the US 2025 Transalp. Suzuki positions the US 2026 800DE as the dirt-capable member of its V-Strom family; that is the manufacturer’s positioning, not independent proof that it outperforms other bikes off road.
More dirt-focused riding
The Yamaha Ténéré 700 and KTM 790 Adventure belong on a dirt-leaning shortlist, but riding ability, suspension setup, equipment and market-specific versions matter as much as a model name. The available four-bike test gives useful measured-output comparisons, not a universal verdict on off-road performance or suitability for every rider.

How the four-bike comparison measured engine output
MotoPlus reported the following crankshaft figures in its 2025 comparison. Its testing note says measurements came from a Dynojet 250, were corrected under 95/1/EG, and had a stated maximum possible deviation of ±5%. They are test measurements, not directly interchangeable with every manufacturer’s published ratings.
| Motorcycle in the 2025 MotoPlus comparison | Measured power | Measured torque |
|---|---|---|
| KTM 790 Adventure | 69.7 kW (95 PS) at 8,200 rpm | 93 Nm at 6,500 rpm |
| Honda XL750 Transalp | 68.1 kW (93 PS) at 9,900 rpm | 76 Nm at 7,200 rpm |
| Suzuki V-Strom 800DE | 60.7 kW (83 PS) at 8,600 rpm | 75 Nm at 6,700 rpm |
| Yamaha Ténéré 700 | 53.1 kW (72 PS) at 9,000 rpm | 67 Nm at 6,500 rpm |
MotoPlus described the KTM as strongest on its measured output and said the Suzuki felt little weaker in practice except when revved out. It also noted the Honda’s engine character and long gearing. Those are observations from that comparison, not a substitute for riding the bikes yourself or a guarantee of how they will feel in other conditions.

What the US model-year specifications tell you
Honda XL750 Transalp: check reach and mass, not just displacement
American Honda’s US 2025 specification page lists a 755cc liquid-cooled parallel twin, six-speed manual transmission, 33.7-inch seat height, 4.4-gallon fuel capacity and 463-pound curb weight. Honda defines that curb weight as including standard equipment, required fluids and a full tank. An optional seat is listed at 32.6 inches. The bike also has a 5-inch display, five ride modes, four-level Honda Selectable Torque Control, a standard quick shifter and rear-wheel ABS deactivation for dirt.
Honda’s separate UK 2026 listing describes RoadSync phone connectivity and E-Clutch operation. Those details are specific to that market and model year; do not assume they apply to the US 2025 model. Honda describes E-Clutch as automating clutch operation for starts, stops and shifts while still allowing use of the clutch lever.

Suzuki V-Strom 800DE: account for the full listed price
Suzuki’s US 2026 page lists a $11,799 base MSRP plus a $700 destination charge. That is a manufacturer-listed price, not a dealer quote or a promise of current inventory. The same page specifies a 776cc parallel twin with a 270-degree firing order and Cross Balancer, plus a 5-inch TFT display. Verify dealer pricing, availability and equipment locally.

Published seat height and weight help narrow a shortlist, but they cannot tell you whether a bike balances comfortably at walking pace, suits your posture or protects you from wind on a long ride. Sit on each candidate in riding gear and, where possible, arrange a test ride.

What one comparison can—and cannot—settle
Suzuki Netherlands reported on 18 July 2025 that the V-Strom 800DE won the price-quality category in the MotoPlus comparison. That result belongs to that test, its market and the prices considered there; it is not a current global value ranking or an overall victory across every middleweight motorcycle.
Use the comparison as one input alongside local pricing, model-year equipment and your own fit. A bike with the strongest test output may not be the best match for a rider who prioritizes easy low-speed handling, touring comfort or a lower seat.
