There is no official Mercedes-AMG ranking of the best model from each decade. This editorial shortlist weighs historical significance, motorsport achievement, engineering milestones and how clearly each car represents AMG in its era. The 1960s are an origin story, not a production-model pick: AMG was founded in 1967 as an engineering firm focused on racing engines.
1960s: AMG’s origin, before AMG-badged production cars
Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher worked on Mercedes racing engines before Aufrecht left Mercedes-Benz in late 1966. They founded AMG in 1967 as an engineering firm focused on racing engines. Their earlier work helped establish their performance reputation, but the available Mercedes-AMG history does not support naming a 1960s AMG-badged production car. Mercedes-AMG’s history treats this decade as the beginning of the company, not a model era.
1970s: Mercedes 300 SEL 6.8
The large Mercedes 300 SEL 6.8 made AMG’s name internationally through competition. At the 24 Hours of Spa in 1971, it won its class and finished second overall. Mercedes-AMG identifies the result as the company’s first major sporting milestone under the AMG name and says the car helped carry AMG’s name around the world. Mercedes-AMG’s motorsport history and its AMG Classic history document the achievement.
It is the strongest 1970s choice because it connects the young engineering firm directly to a consequential racing result. Its significance is not that it was an early example of a modern showroom model line, but that it established AMG as a name to know in motorsport.

1980s: AMG Hammer
The Hammer is the decade’s defining AMG road-car icon: it brought conspicuous, high-performance engineering to an E-Class-based car and became especially well known in the United States. Mercedes-AMG dates the Hammer milestone to 1986 and describes AMG fitting a 5.0-liter V8 to an E-Class coupé. Mercedes-AMG’s history presents it as a landmark in AMG’s development.
“Hammer” covers multiple configurations, so its figures should not be collapsed into one universal specification. AMG Classic says a modified 300 E 5.0–6.0 reached up to 385 hp. It separately describes a later four-valve-cylinder-head sedan/coupé configuration rated at 265 kW (360 hp), 510 Nm and 303 km/h. Those details refer to different configurations, not a single standard Hammer. See AMG Classic for the manufacturer’s distinctions.

1990s: Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG
Unveiled in 1993, the C 36 AMG was the first vehicle jointly developed under the cooperation agreement between AMG and Daimler-Benz. It marks a different kind of milestone from the Hammer: AMG’s performance work was now part of a formal collaboration with the automaker. Mercedes-AMG Classic reports that 5,000 C 36 AMGs had been sold by 1997; that is the manufacturer’s historical figure, not an independently audited total. AMG Classic records both the development milestone and the sales figure.
Mercedes-AMG attributes this recollection to Mario Spitzner, its Director of Marketing from 1990 to 2014: “In 1993, we ushered in a new era with the C 36 AMG. It was the first AMG vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz world.”

2000s: SLS AMG
The 2009 SLS AMG represents AMG’s move into independent sports-car development. Mercedes-AMG calls it its first independently developed supercar and its first model fully developed in-house. Its gullwing doors gave the car a distinctive identity, but the deeper milestone was institutional: AMG was no longer only a tuner or development partner; it was creating a sports car of its own. Mercedes-AMG Classic documents the SLS milestone.
2010s: Mercedes-AMG GT, or a Black Series for track focus
For the broadest model-line story, the Mercedes-AMG GT is the pick. Mercedes-AMG identifies it as the second sports car developed independently by AMG, extending the SLS-era move into AMG-led sports-car development. Mercedes-AMG’s history describes that lineage.

- Made of zinc alloy with ABS plastic parts
- 5.9 inch x 2.2 inch x 1.8 inch(size)
- The two sides of doors could be opened, front and back covercould be opened too
- You can pull back the car, then it can move forwards with Lights and Sound
- Very suitable as children 4 years and up toys for birthday,Christmas gift, new year. Also it can be a gift for your boyfriend
A different choice makes sense if “best” means a road-going car with a more explicitly track-focused character. Mercedes-AMG’s official Black Series history documents the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series (2011) and SLS AMG Coupé Black Series (2012). These specialized variants foreground motorsport-derived focus; they are alternatives to the GT as a broad independent-sports-car milestone, not interchangeable winners under the same criterion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.2020s: Mercedes-AMG SL (R 232)
The current-generation SL (R 232) is a defensible 2020s choice because Mercedes-AMG says this generation’s development was in AMG’s hands for the first time. That makes it a notable AMG-led roadster, even though the decade is still underway and this is an editorial pick rather than an established all-decade verdict.

Mercedes-AMG describes the body structure as a mix of aluminum, steel, magnesium and fiber composites in its SL history feature. The same feature gives stiffness comparisons as manufacturer claims; those figures should be understood as Mercedes-AMG’s own, not independent measurements. Jochen Hermann, Technical Managing Director at Mercedes-AMG, described the goal as a car that would make people say: “Wow, an icon is back – and it’s still an AMG.”
How the picks differ
| Decade and pick | What makes it significant | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| 1970s: 300 SEL 6.8 | Class win and second overall at Spa in 1971, according to Mercedes-AMG | AMG’s motorsport reputation taking shape |
| 1980s: Hammer | A landmark high-performance road-car program with multiple configurations | AMG’s road-car identity and tuner-era icon status |
| 1990s: C 36 AMG | First jointly developed vehicle under the AMG–Daimler-Benz cooperation agreement | Formal integration of AMG performance into the Mercedes-Benz world |
| 2000s: SLS AMG | AMG’s first independently developed supercar and first fully in-house model | Independent AMG sports-car development |
| 2010s: Mercedes-AMG GT | AMG’s second independently developed sports car | Continuation of the independent sports-car lineage |
| 2010s alternative: Black Series models | Official history documents the C 63 Coupé (2011) and SLS Coupé (2012) | More specialized, track-focused road cars |
| 2020s: SL (R 232) | Development of this generation was in AMG’s hands for the first time | AMG leadership applied to a long-running roadster |
The choices are not an objective ranking: Mercedes-AMG’s historical pages establish milestones, not a best-by-decade contest. The 300 SEL is the clearest racing pick, while the SLS and GT tell the story of independent sports-car development. Black Series models suit a narrower track-focus criterion; the SL is a current-generation choice whose decade is not yet complete.
