For most U.S. shoppers who want a full-size SUV, the Chevrolet Tahoe is the strongest all-around pick: it earns a 10/10 in Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking and performed well in that publication’s family-focused comparison test. The Ford Expedition is the better starting point if towing is your priority, while the GMC Yukon is a compelling near-twin for buyers who want a more upscale mainstream alternative. There is no universal winner: Car and Driver, MotorTrend and Cars.com reach different conclusions because they weigh vehicles differently.
This ranking covers current 2026 U.S.-market three-row SUVs intended to deliver substantial passenger and cargo space and towing capability. “Full-size” has no single universal boundary; models sometimes placed near the category’s edge, such as the BMW X7, are included only where they meaningfully help explain the trade-off between luxury and family utility. The order below is an editorial guide based on available comparative tests and manufacturer specifications, not a claim that every vehicle was tested head-to-head.
How these full-size SUVs are ranked
The ranking prioritizes everyday family usefulness, passenger access, cargo flexibility, towing capability and overall comfort, while recognizing that luxury, off-road ability and powertrain choice can change what “best” means for an individual buyer. Car and Driver says its 2026 rankings combine instrumented testing with editors’ real-world impressions and roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and driving enjoyment. MotorTrend and Cars.com apply their own evaluation methods, so their winners are useful context rather than a single shared scorecard.
Use manufacturer towing figures as configuration-specific ceilings, not promises for every trim. Before buying, compare the exact drivetrain and equipment, and check the cargo area with the seats in the positions your family will actually use.

Ranked: the best full-size SUV from each brand
1. Chevrolet Tahoe — best overall
The Tahoe is the best starting point for shoppers who need a versatile three-row SUV without moving into a luxury badge. Car and Driver awards the 2026 Tahoe 10/10 in its full-size three-row ranking, tying it with the GMC Yukon. Its separate six-vehicle family comparison considered child-seat installation, highway navigation, wet-weather driving, third-row access and parallel parking. Car and Driver concluded that the Tahoe “might be the World’s Best” in that comparison—an editorial verdict, not an objective category-wide fact.
Choose the Tahoe when you want a strong balance of passenger and cargo utility, comfort and capability. Check third-row access and cargo room with seats raised in person; a three-row label alone does not tell you how well the vehicle fits adults, child seats or a stroller.
2. Ford Expedition — best for maximum towing
Ford’s 2026 Expedition ranks first in MotorTrend’s visible full-size SUV list, ahead of the Chevrolet Suburban and Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Ford says a properly equipped 2026 Expedition can tow up to 9,600 pounds. The Expedition MAX 4×4 is listed at up to 9,000 pounds, illustrating why a model’s headline maximum should not be applied to every body style or drivetrain. Ford also publishes cargo volumes by body length and seating-row configuration; compare the specific layout rather than treating one cargo figure as universal.
Start with the Expedition if towing is central to your decision, then verify the rating for the exact trim and equipment you plan to buy. Its MotorTrend ranking is one publication’s result, not a guarantee that it will suit every family better than its rivals.

3. GMC Yukon — best upscale mainstream alternative
The Yukon shares the Tahoe’s 10/10 Car and Driver score for 2026, making it one of that publication’s top-rated full-size three-row SUVs. For shoppers comparing mainstream choices, it is a natural alternative to the Tahoe when the Yukon’s particular trim, equipment and cabin presentation appeal more. The available evidence does not establish that it is roomier, more reliable or better value than the Tahoe, so make those comparisons with the exact versions you are considering.
4. Chevrolet Suburban — best when you need a longer body
The Suburban ranks second in MotorTrend’s 2026 list, one place ahead of the GMC Yukon and three ahead of the Tahoe. Its place here reflects its role as a full-size alternative for buyers evaluating the larger-body end of the segment; the available ranking evidence does not provide directly comparable cargo measurements across all models. Check cargo dimensions behind the third row and with seats folded, rather than assuming that a longer vehicle automatically solves every loading or parking constraint.
5. Toyota Sequoia — best for a hybrid powertrain and strong towing figure
Toyota equips the 2026 Sequoia with an i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid rated at 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. Toyota lists up to 9,500 pounds of towing and up to 86.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded; seating is available for up to eight, depending on configuration. These are manufacturer specifications and maximums, not independent test results.
The hybrid system makes the Sequoia a distinctive choice in this group, but it does not by itself prove that the SUV will deliver the best real-world fuel economy or the most usable cargo layout. Compare its actual storage dimensions, seating arrangement and efficiency against your needs.

- DIE CAST CONSTRUCTION: Made with die cast metal for durability and authentic detail, ideal for kids and adult collectors alike.
6. Nissan Armada — best award-winning value-and-versatility contender
Cars.com selected the 2026 Nissan Armada as its Best SUV, citing versatility, safety, comfort, capability and value as the award rationale. Nissan lists a 425-horsepower 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, seating for up to eight and maximum towing capacity of 8,500 pounds. The award is Cars.com’s editorial judgment; it is not a universal ranking or an independently established reliability finding.
Consider the Armada if its combination of seating, capability and value fits your shortlist. Confirm the towing figure for your exact configuration and evaluate child-seat fit and cargo space directly.
7. Jeep Grand Wagoneer — best to consider for family access and luxury
MotorTrend places the 2026 Grand Wagoneer third, behind the Expedition and Suburban. In Car and Driver’s six-vehicle comparison, the tested Wagoneer had accessible child-seat anchors and rows that adults could enter and leave easily. That is useful family-practicality evidence, but it is specific to the tested vehicle and comparison—not proof that every trim or child-seat combination will fit equally well.
Luxury equipment can make a full-size SUV feel more special, but the available evidence does not establish a price premium or a class-leading value case. Compare the exact vehicle’s features and price with a similarly equipped mainstream rival before deciding whether the added luxury is worth it.

8. BMW X7 — best to consider if luxury matters more than maximum family space
Car and Driver scores the 2026 BMW X7 9.5/10, but specifically notes that it is short on third-row space and cargo room. That makes it a strong luxury-oriented option for buyers who value its overall experience more than the most generous family packaging. If your third row will be used often by adults or you regularly travel with all seats occupied, prioritize an in-person fit check before choosing it over a larger-feeling rival.
How the major rankings differ
Published winners differ because each outlet sets its own priorities. The table separates those editorial outcomes from the manufacturer specifications used for individual vehicles.
| Source and scope | Top result or order | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Car and Driver, 2026 full-size three-row ranking | Tahoe and Yukon: 10/10 each; BMW X7: 9.5/10; Cadillac Escalade: 9/10 | Car and Driver’s editorial scores. It notes the X7 is short on third-row space and cargo room. |
| MotorTrend, visible 2026 ranking | Expedition, Suburban, Grand Wagoneer, Yukon, Tahoe, Armada, Sequoia | MotorTrend’s order for the models shown; not a universal verdict. |
| Cars.com, 2026 Best SUV award | Nissan Armada | Cars.com’s award selection, citing versatility, safety, comfort, capability and value. |
These results should not be averaged into a fake consensus. For a family buyer, the best use of the rankings is to identify candidates, then test the details that most affect your routine: third-row entry, child-seat installation, cargo space with all seats occupied and the exact towing configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which full-size SUV has the most third-row room?
The available comparisons do not establish a single, defensible third-row-space winner across all 2026 models. Car and Driver specifically calls out the BMW X7 for limited third-row and cargo room, but the evidence here does not provide a consistent set of measurements for the rest of the field. Row count is not a substitute for usable space: seat position, foot room, entry opening and the cargo left behind the row all matter.

Which full-size SUV is best for towing?
Among the specific manufacturer maximums established here, Ford lists the highest figure: up to 9,600 pounds for a properly equipped 2026 Expedition. Toyota lists up to 9,500 pounds for the 2026 Sequoia, and Nissan lists 8,500 pounds for the 2026 Armada. These figures are not directly interchangeable: equipment and configuration affect maximum capacity, and the Expedition MAX 4×4 figure is up to 9,000 pounds rather than 9,600.
For an actual towing decision, match the rating to the exact vehicle and intended load. Do not choose from a model-name comparison alone.
Tahoe or Suburban: how to choose
Both are Chevrolet full-size three-row SUVs, and MotorTrend ranks the Suburban second and Tahoe fifth in its 2026 visible list. The rankings do not supply a directly comparable cargo-volume table here, so they cannot settle which one is the better fit for a particular load. Compare the physical cargo area, rear-seat access and parking practicality on the trims you would buy. Choose based on whether the Suburban’s longer-body format is useful enough to justify its footprint for your household.
Is a luxury full-size SUV worth the premium?
It can be, if the specific cabin, features and driving experience matter more to you than maximizing passenger and cargo utility for the money. The BMW X7’s strong Car and Driver score coexists with the publication’s warning about its third row and cargo room; the Grand Wagoneer’s child-seat access and adult entry were strengths in one comparison test. The available evidence does not establish comparable prices or a quantified luxury-model advantage, so evaluate the exact trim against a similarly equipped mainstream SUV and test the features you value most.

The rankings and specifications cited here do not establish which 2026 full-size SUV is most reliable. Editorial scores, manufacturer towing limits and award selections are not reliability statistics. For a reliability decision, look for a named study with a clear model-year scope and methodology, and distinguish its findings from a reviewer’s overall ranking.
