Its manufacturer-listed folded dimensions—23 × 22.2 × 10.6 inches—are substantially more compact than the other models considered here, making it the strongest choice for a small apartment, train commute, office, restaurant storage, or a car trunk.
It is not the best choice for every rider, though. The Lectric XP Lite 2.0 is the better value and easier lift among mainstream options; the Tern Vektron is the premium choice for adjustable fit and Bosch-powered utility; and the RadExpand 5 Plus is the better match for fat-tire stability and a higher stated payload. “Space-saving” does not necessarily mean lightweight or easy to carry.
Quick comparison
All figures below are manufacturer-listed specifications, not results from independent testing. Prices, availability, included equipment, battery options, colors, and model trims can change.
| Model | Best for | Folded size | Listed weight | Important compromise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brompton Electric C Line | Smallest storage footprint and transit | 23 × 22.2 × 10.6 in | From 39.5 lb total | Premium price and small-wheel ride feel |
| Lectric XP Lite 2.0 | Value, throttle, and lower lifting weight | 36 × 16 × 28 in | 41 lb without battery; about 49 lb with standard battery | Single-speed drivetrain and less compact fold |
| Tern Vektron | Premium fit, Bosch system, and utility | About 41 × 86 × 68 cm, depending on model | About 20 kg without battery | Heavy and expensive compared with value models |
| RadExpand 5 Plus | Fat-tire stability and payload | Verify the exact trim before buying | Not established in the product information reviewed | Bulkier storage and carrying burden |

1. Brompton Electric C Line: best for the smallest folded package
The Brompton Electric C Line is the clearest choice when storage dimensions matter more than conventional-bike proportions. Brompton describes it as its most compact folding e-bike, and the U.S. product information lists a folded package measuring 23 inches high × 22.2 inches wide × 10.6 inches deep. Its listed starting total weight is 39.5 pounds.
That footprint is the reason to choose it. The C Line can fit into spaces that would reject a typical 20-inch folding e-bike: a narrow apartment closet, a compact office corner, a train luggage area, or a car trunk where length and width are tightly constrained. Its battery is detachable, and the cited U.S. configuration uses a steel frame, compact rear-hub motor, and four-speed drivetrain.
Why it is the space-saving winner
- Exceptionally small folded dimensions: 23 × 22.2 × 10.6 inches is materially smaller than the other bikes in this comparison.
- Transit-friendly design: the compact folded shape is useful when the bike must share space with luggage or passengers.
- Removable battery: taking the battery indoors can make charging more convenient and reduces the weight lifted with the bike.
- Four-speed drivetrain: it offers more gearing flexibility than a single-speed folder.
What to give up
The C Line is compact, but it is not featherweight. At 39.5 pounds starting total weight, it may still be awkward on stairs, particularly if the battery remains installed. Its small 16-inch wheels are a deliberate compromise: they help produce the tiny folded package, but they do not provide the same wheel diameter or tire volume as a 20-inch bike.

2. Lectric XP Lite 2.0: best value and easier lifting among mainstream options
The Lectric XP Lite 2.0 is the most persuasive value-oriented option in this group. Lectric lists the bike at 41 pounds with the 8-pound battery removed, or approximately 49 pounds with the standard battery installed. Its folded dimensions are 36 × 16 × 28 inches.
That is much larger than the Brompton when folded, but the removable battery makes a practical difference when the bike must be carried into a home or apartment. Removing an 8-pound battery does not turn the frame into a lightweight object, but it can make the difference between a manageable lift and an unnecessarily difficult one.
Key specifications
- Advertised top speed: 20 mph
- Motor: 300-watt nominal rear hub motor, with 819-watt peak output listed by Lectric
- Controls: twist throttle and five pedal-assist levels
- Brakes: hydraulic disc brakes
- Battery choices: standard battery advertised up to 45 miles, or long-range battery advertised up to 80 miles
- Folded dimensions: 36 × 16 × 28 inches
Those range figures are “up to” marketing estimates, not guaranteed distances. Rider weight, hills, wind, temperature, tire pressure, assist level, speed, and battery age can all reduce actual range.
Fit and payload: do not confuse the two
Lectric publishes an approximate rider-height range of 4 feet 8 inches to 6 feet 2 inches. Its FAQ lists a 220-pound maximum rider weight for this model. That rider limit should not be casually replaced with the larger 275-pound payload figure that appears on some product materials: payload can include the rider plus cargo, while a rider-weight limit describes the person alone. Confirm the current manual and product page for the exact trim before purchase.
Why choose it
The XP Lite 2.0 makes sense for someone who wants a conventional 20-inch wheel, throttle operation, hydraulic brakes, a folding frame and stem, and a relatively approachable price without moving to a heavy fat-tire bike. It is a good choice for car-based trips where the bike rides in the trunk and is then used for the last few miles.
The principal drawback is its single-speed drivetrain in the cited version. That can be perfectly adequate on flatter routes, but steep hills or riders who prefer traditional gearing may find it limiting. It is also not especially compact once folded: measure the trunk opening, not just the trunk’s interior volume.
3. Tern Vektron: best premium commuter and comfort fit
The Tern Vektron is the choice for buyers who want a more adjustable, utility-oriented folding e-bike and are willing to accept more weight and a larger folded package. Tern lists model-dependent folded dimensions of approximately 41 × 86 × 68 centimeters or 42 × 85 × 69 centimeters. That converts to roughly 16 × 34 × 27 inches, depending on the model.
Tern lists the bike at approximately 20 kilograms without the battery—about 44 pounds. The battery adds approximately another 5 to 6.6 pounds. In other words, this is a bike for rolling short distances and carrying only when necessary, not a stair-friendly lightweight folder.

- Broad adjustment range: Tern lists rider compatibility from approximately 147 to 195 cm, or about 4 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 5 inches.
- Bosch drive system: the Bosch ecosystem is a major reason to consider the Vektron over a lower-priced folder.
- 20-inch wheels: they provide a more familiar proportion than a compact 16-inch folding-bike format.
- Utility compatibility: the bike is designed for practical commuting and rack-compatible use.
- Rolling fold: Tern says the bike can fold in about 10 seconds and roll on its wheels using the saddle as a handle.
- Upright folded storage: it can be stored upright when folded, although Tern specifically says it is not designed to be parked vertically while unfolded.
The Vektron is a strong answer for a taller rider who needs adjustment, a commuter who values the Bosch system, or an owner who will roll the folded bike through a station or building rather than carry it up several flights of stairs.

4. RadExpand 5 Plus: best for fat-tire stability, rougher surfaces, and payload
The RadExpand 5 Plus is aimed at a different buyer. Rad Power Bikes lists 20-inch tires, a 750-watt motor rating, an advertised 20-mph top speed, advertised range of 60-plus miles, and a 315-pound payload. The cited product information targets riders from approximately 4 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 10 inches. The product page accessed for this research listed a price of $1,899 at that time, but price and trim details should be checked again before publication or purchase.
Wide tires can be valuable on rough pavement, broken paths, and mixed surfaces. The higher stated payload also makes this model relevant to riders carrying more cargo or who need a higher-capacity platform. A step-through frame option may further improve accessibility, depending on the selected configuration.
The space-saving limitation
The RadExpand’s strengths work against maximum portability. Fat tires, a large battery-oriented design, and a more substantial frame generally mean more bulk and more carrying effort than the Brompton or XP Lite. The accessible product summary reviewed here did not provide a verified folded measurement for the exact model or trim, so it should not be ranked as the best bike for a closet, compact trunk, or narrow doorway without confirming that dimension first.
Choose the RadExpand when stability, tire volume, and payload matter more than the smallest folded package. If your priority is fitting the bike into a small car, ask the seller for the exact folded length, width, and height—including pedals, handlebars, and any installed accessories.
How to choose a folding e-bike for a small home or car
1. Measure the complete storage route
Do not measure only the storage space. Measure the narrowest part of the route:
- the apartment or garage door opening;
- hallways and elevator doors;
- the closet’s usable interior;
- the car’s trunk opening and height;
- the space remaining after luggage, a spare tire, or child seats are installed;
- public-transit luggage limits where applicable.
Compare those measurements with the manufacturer’s folded length, width, and height. Folded volume alone is not enough: a bike that fits inside a trunk may still fail to pass through the opening at the required angle.

A folding mechanism helps storage, but it does not automatically make a bike easy to lift. Consider three separate weights:
- Complete riding weight: useful for judging transport and handling.
- Frame weight with the battery removed: the relevant figure for stairs when the battery is detachable.
- Battery weight: useful because many owners charge the battery indoors even when the bike is stored elsewhere.
The Brompton wins on compactness. The XP Lite’s removable battery helps with lifting. The Vektron is designed more for rolling than carrying. The RadExpand’s likely fat-tire bulk makes it the least obvious choice for frequent stair transport.
3. Check rider fit, not just folded size
Published height ranges are useful screening tools, but they are not a substitute for a fitting. The cited ranges vary considerably:

- Tern Vektron: approximately 4 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 5 inches.
- RadExpand 5 Plus: approximately 4 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 10 inches.
The Vektron has the broadest cited fit range. Riders near the upper or lower end of any published range should confirm saddle height, handlebar reach, standover clearance, and riding position before ordering.
4. Match wheel and tire design to the route
Wheel size is a storage decision and a ride-quality decision at the same time.
- Small wheels: help create an exceptionally compact fold, as with the Brompton, but have less tire volume and a different ride feel.
- 20-inch wheels: offer a more familiar compromise between maneuverability, ride stability, and folding size.
- Fat tires: can increase confidence and cushioning on rougher surfaces, but add rolling resistance, bulk, and carrying weight.
Choose based on the surfaces you actually ride. A fat-tire bike is not automatically better for a smooth urban commute, just as a tiny-wheel bike is not automatically the best tool for rough paths.
5. Identify throttle and class requirements
Local e-bike rules vary by jurisdiction. They may regulate class, maximum assisted speed, throttle operation, helmet use, equipment, age, and where e-bikes may be ridden.
Tern describes the U.S. Vektron configuration as Class 1, with pedal assistance up to 20 mph and no throttle. Lectric describes the XP Lite 2.0 as capable of Class 1 or Class 2 operation depending on configuration and settings. Verify the rules where you will ride rather than assuming that a bike’s advertised mode is legal everywhere.

6. Treat the battery and charger as core buying criteria
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has urged e-bike manufacturers to comply with applicable UL standards and has warned that noncompliant lithium-ion batteries can create fire and serious-injury risks. A responsible charging routine matters regardless of the model:
- Use the manufacturer-supplied battery and charger.
- Do not modify, open, rebuild, or mix battery packs and chargers unless the manufacturer explicitly approves the equipment.
- Charge according to the manual and use an appropriate location away from easily ignited materials.
- Stop using a battery that is damaged, swollen, unusually hot, leaking, or behaving abnormally.
- Do not assume that a UL reference makes a bike risk-free; certification claims should be checked for the exact product and market.
Also confirm whether the battery can be removed without tools, how much it weighs, whether a replacement is available, and whether the charger can be stored separately. Those details matter more in a small home than a headline range figure.

For the smallest trunk, start with the Brompton Electric C Line, provided its 23 × 22.2 × 10.6-inch folded package meets your trunk opening and your riding needs. The Lectric XP Lite 2.0 is a practical alternative when you want a 20-inch wheel, throttle, and lower weight with the battery removed.
The Tern Vektron can work well in a larger hatchback, SUV, or wagon, especially when it can be rolled to the vehicle rather than lifted far. What was not independently tested
This comparison is based on manufacturer-listed specifications and product information. No independent riding, braking, range, durability, comfort, folding-speed, or hill-climbing testing was performed for this guide. Accordingly, the recommendations describe the best fit for specific use cases—not proven winners in real-world testing.
In particular, advertised range should not be read as normal riding range, and claims such as “smoothest ride,” “best braking,” or “most comfortable” would require independent testing. Actual performance depends on terrain, rider and cargo weight, temperature, assist setting, speed, wind, tire pressure, and battery condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most compact folding electric bike?
Among the models compared here, the Brompton Electric C Line has the smallest manufacturer-listed folded dimensions: 23 inches high × 22.2 inches wide × 10.6 inches deep. Its compactness comes with small 16-inch wheels and a starting listed weight of 39.5 pounds, so it is not the lightest option.
Which folding e-bike is easiest to carry upstairs?
The Lectric XP Lite 2.0 is the strongest choice among these mainstream options when the battery is removed: Lectric lists 41 pounds without its 8-pound battery. It is still a substantial object, and the Brompton is more compact rather than dramatically lighter. The Tern Vektron and RadExpand 5 Plus are better treated as bikes to roll rather than regularly carry.
Are folding electric bikes suitable for car trunks?
Yes, but the correct model depends on the trunk opening as well as interior volume. The Brompton is the easiest fit for very tight spaces, while the Lectric XP Lite 2.0 offers a larger 20-inch wheel in a still-manageable folded package. Always compare the exact folded dimensions with the trunk opening and remove the battery if recommended by the manufacturer.
Does a folding e-bike have less range because it folds?
Folding itself does not determine range. Battery capacity, rider and cargo weight, terrain, wind, temperature, tire pressure, speed, and assist level matter more. Manufacturer “up to” range figures are controlled-condition estimates and should not be treated as guaranteed real-world distance.
Are fat tires better on a folding electric bike?
Fat tires can provide more stability and cushioning on rough pavement or mixed surfaces, which is why the RadExpand 5 Plus suits that use case. They generally add bulk, rolling resistance, and carrying weight, making them a poor choice when the primary goal is the smallest folded package.
The Bottom Line
Choose the Brompton Electric C Line when every inch of storage matters. Choose the Lectric XP Lite 2.0 when value, a throttle, and a removable 8-pound battery matter more than the smallest fold. Choose the Tern Vektron for premium adjustability, Bosch drive-system integration, and utility. Choose the RadExpand 5 Plus for fat-tire stability and a higher stated payload—but verify its exact folded dimensions before counting on it for a small closet or car.
