For a family with four kids, the best 2025 vehicle is the one that fits your children, their car seats, and your everyday cargo—not simply the one with the most advertised seats. Start with three-row minivans and SUVs, then install your own child seats in each vehicle you are considering. Check second-row seating, third-row access, passenger comfort, and cargo room with all rows in use before choosing.
What matters most when choosing a car for 4 kids?
Four children can make a nominal six- or seven-seat vehicle a poor fit. The second-row layout, car-seat installation, access to the third row, and luggage space all affect whether the vehicle works for your family. There is no universal winner without knowing the children’s ages and sizes, your budget, where you drive, and how much passenger and cargo space you need.
- Usable seating: Check whether the second row is a bench or captain’s chairs and whether every child has an appropriate seating position.
- Child-seat fit: Test your actual seats in the exact vehicle and follow both the vehicle and child-seat manuals.
- Third-row access: See whether children can get in and out with the second-row seats configured for your family.
- Comfort and cargo: Have passengers try the third row, then check how much room remains for bags with all rows occupied.
- Safety and configuration: Review ratings for the specific model year and confirm any trim or build-date qualifications.
Which 2025 vehicles belong on a family shortlist?
Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 Best Family Cars list includes two minivans and several three-row SUVs. That list is a useful starting point, not proof that every trim will fit four children or their restraints.
Minivans
The Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna are three-row family choices on KBB’s list. Consider both alongside SUVs, especially if passenger access and everyday family use are priorities. The available sources do not provide a matched comparison of their door openings, child-seat layouts, or cargo space behind the third row, so test the specific configurations yourself.

Three-row SUVs
KBB’s list also names the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Telluride, and Toyota Highlander. The IIHS 2025 midsize SUV award list adds the Chevrolet Traverse, Nissan Pathfinder, and Subaru Ascent as award-winning candidates. Award status and seating practicality are separate questions: confirm the rating and fit for the exact vehicle you are shopping for.
How much cargo space is left behind the third row?
When all three rows are occupied, cargo capacity can decide whether a vehicle works for school runs, sports gear, or a family trip. An AP-published Edmunds comparison reported these 2025 model figures; verify the specifications for the particular model and configuration before buying.

These figures are not a complete or trim-by-trim comparison across minivans and SUVs. Treat them as a starting point, then bring the bags, stroller, sports equipment, or other bulky items your family regularly carries to a dealership.
How should you check safety for a family vehicle?
IIHS evaluates both crashworthiness—how well a vehicle protects occupants in a crash—and crash avoidance and mitigation, which covers technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity. Check the exact model year and any build-date conditions on the IIHS ratings site; an award for one version or production period should not be assumed to apply to every trim or vehicle carrying the same model name.

IIHS’s 2025 midsize SUV award list includes the Chevrolet Traverse and Honda Pilot as Top Safety Pick; the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Telluride as Top Safety Pick+; the Nissan Pathfinder as Top Safety Pick+; and the Subaru Ascent as Top Safety Pick. The Santa Fe award applies to vehicles built after November 2024. The Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia awards are limited to vehicles built after January 2025. Check IIHS’s current award details for the vehicle’s build date and configuration.
IIHS President David Harkey said, “Every vehicle that earns a 2025 award offers a high level of safety in both the front seat and the second row.” IIHS also says “the second row remains the safest position for children under 13.” Follow the vehicle and restraint manufacturers’ instructions when selecting a seat position; the guidance does not override the requirements for a particular child seat or vehicle.

NHTSA’s October 23, 2024 announcement said it selected 37 model-year 2025 vehicles for 5-Star Safety Ratings testing. NHTSA said those vehicles, together with previously tested models without significant model-year changes, represented approximately 87% of the new-vehicle fleet. That describes planned testing coverage, not a five-star result for every named vehicle. Look up the specific vehicle’s result through NHTSA’s ratings page.

NHTSA warns that not all car seats fit all vehicles and recommends trying the intended seat in the vehicle. A vehicle’s seating capacity alone cannot establish that your family’s particular restraints will fit or install correctly.

- Bring each child’s current restraint to the exact vehicle you are considering.
- Install each restraint according to both the vehicle manual and the child-seat manual.
- Use either the lower anchors or the seat belt to secure a child seat, not both, unless the manufacturers’ instructions specify otherwise.
- For a forward-facing seat, use a tether when both the vehicle and seat manufacturers permit it.
- Check that children can enter and exit the third row with the seats installed in the positions you plan to use.
NHTSA advises keeping children in the back seat. It also says a child should remain in a booster until the vehicle belt fits properly: the lap belt should lie snugly across the upper thighs, while the shoulder belt crosses the shoulder and chest rather than the neck or face. The appropriate restraint depends on each child’s age, height, weight, maturity, belt fit, and manufacturer instructions; the fact that a family has four children does not by itself determine which seats they need.
How to compare finalists before you buy
Choose a small group of minivans and three-row SUVs, then compare the actual vehicles rather than relying on seat-count labels or a single award. Use this checklist during a visit:
- Confirm the seating capacity and second-row layout for the exact trim.
- Install your family’s child seats and check each position against the manuals.
- Try third-row entry and exit with the child seats in place.
- Have the intended passengers sit in the third row and assess comfort.
- Measure usable cargo space with all three rows occupied and your usual gear aboard.
- Check IIHS and NHTSA results for the model year, trim, and any build-date qualifications.
- Compare fuel economy, price, and drivetrain for the specific versions available to you.
A vehicle that passes these checks for your family is a stronger choice than one that looks best on a generic ranking. If a restraint does not install as directed or a child cannot reach the third row safely and comfortably, move on to another configuration or model.
