The forecast risk runs from noon to 9 p.m., the longest severe window in the table. A departure before noon gives you the best chance of clearing major urban corridors before congestion builds.

Traffic is expected to be heavy from noon to 7 p.m. Leave before 11 a.m. where possible, especially if your route includes a bridge, beach corridor or major city bottleneck.
Sunday, July 5
Return traffic is forecast from noon to 6 p.m. The lower-congestion choice is before 11 a.m.; leaving in the late afternoon can still expose you to long delays on routes serving holiday destinations.

Why July 4 has a different pattern
On Saturday, July 4, the forecast peak is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when people travel to daytime events, beaches and fireworks destinations. INRIX lists after 3 p.m. as the best window for driving that day. That does not mean every road will be clear: local parade routes, fireworks closures and event parking can create intense delays outside the national pattern.

Local routes can override the national schedule
Metro conditions vary substantially. Boston, Los Angeles and Philadelphia are expected to see their highest holiday-period pressure on Saturday, June 27, while the second holiday weekend beginning Thursday, July 2, is busiest overall in the national outlook.

For example, the Boston–Hyannis and Washington, DC–Annapolis forecasts each show travel time at 100% above typical. Check your exact corridor immediately before departure rather than relying only on the national timetable.
How much travel is expected?
- AAA expects 72.2 million Americans to travel at least 50 miles during June 27–July 5, 2026.
- About 61.4 million people are projected to travel by car, representing 85% of Independence Day travelers.
- AAA also forecasts 5.85 million domestic air travelers and 4.93 million bus, train and cruise travelers.
AAA and S&P Global Market Intelligence produce person-trip forecasts using economic, travel and tourism variables. INRIX models selected high-impact routes with connected-vehicle GPS, mobile-app, navigation, roadside-sensor, camera and fleet-telematics data. Crashes, construction, severe weather and local event closures can change actual conditions.

Prepare the vehicle before leaving
AAA recorded more than 687,000 roadside-assistance calls during the previous Independence Day week. About half required towing, and nearly 30% involved battery replacement or flat tires.
- Schedule routine maintenance before the trip.
- Check battery condition and tire pressure; a digital tire-pressure gauge makes the pressure check easy to repeat at home and on the road.
- Inspect tires for damage and confirm that the spare, jack and lug wrench are present.
- Save your roadside-assistance contact details. AAA roadside assistance can help members, but confirm current membership terms and coverage before traveling.
Plan for impairment and fatigue
AAA’s crash-data analysis found that nearly one in three summertime traffic deaths involved an impaired driver. Designate a sober driver, use a taxi or rideshare, or arrange another sober ride after drinking or using impairing substances. Long holiday drives also require rest breaks; do not continue when you are too tired to drive safely.

If you do not have a suitable vehicle
A July 4 car rental can solve a capacity or reliability problem, but inventory and rates vary by location and date. Hertz is AAA’s named rental partner; check live availability, insurance requirements, mileage limits and partner terms before booking.
How to choose your departure time
- Start with the table’s best window for your travel date.
- Move earlier if your route passes through a major city, beach corridor, bridge or mountain bottleneck.
- Check live traffic, weather, construction notices and event-closure alerts shortly before leaving.
- Add a fuel, food and rest buffer instead of planning to arrive at the exact end of the forecast window.
- If conditions deteriorate because of a crash or storm, delay departure or stop at a safe location rather than trying to maintain the original schedule.
Bottom line
For most 2026 July 4 trips, leave before 10 or 11 a.m. The most difficult national periods are Wednesday afternoon and evening, Friday afternoon and evening, and Sunday afternoon. On July 4 itself, avoid 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and consider leaving after 3 p.m. Local route conditions can be more important than the national average, so verify the corridor immediately before you go.
