Tesla is experiencing a genuine global sales setback, not merely a temporary reporting quirk. The weakness was most severe in Europe, where Tesla fell while the broader electric-car market remained broadly stable. A Model Y factory changeover clearly disrupted deliveries, but stronger competition, pricing pressure and brand-related backlash also point to a demand problem. Tesla’s second-quarter 2026 rebound is encouraging, yet it is too early to call it a full recovery.
What the 2025 global numbers show
Tesla’s annual delivery decline reached a second consecutive year in 2025. The comparison with BYD also marks a significant competitive change.

| Measure | Result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla global deliveries, calendar 2025 | 1.64 million, down 9% year over year | The second annual decline in a row. |
| BYD vehicles sold, calendar 2025 | 2.26 million | Associated Press reporting put BYD ahead of Tesla in 2025 volume; the reported comparison also means Tesla lost the global battery-electric-vehicle volume lead. |
That is a material deterioration from Tesla’s previous growth pattern. It does not, by itself, show whether every quarter or region weakened equally, which is why the geographic and operational detail matters.

Europe is the clearest stress test
European registrations show Tesla underperforming a market that was not collapsing at the same time. ACEA data reported by the Associated Press show the following:
#1 Best Overall
- Theme: Sport
- Toy vehicle form: Car
- Included components: Batteries
- Material: Metal
| Period and geography | Tesla result | Market context |
|---|---|---|
| April 2025, 32 European countries | 7,261 registrations, down 49% year over year | The wider EU market rose 1.3% in April. |
| January–April 2025, same 32-country grouping | 61,320 registrations, down about 39% | The decline was not limited to one unusually weak month. |
Registrations are not identical to Tesla’s global delivery measure, but the direction is unambiguous: Europe was the company’s sharpest regional pain point. The contrast with a broadly stable EU market makes a purely industry-wide explanation inadequate.
Why Tesla sales fell
The Model Y factory changeover interrupted supply
Tesla’s second-quarter 2025 Form 10-Q attributes much of the first-half pressure to simultaneous production changeovers for the refreshed Model Y. The filing says there were approximately 95,000 fewer combined Model 3 and Model Y cash deliveries in the first half, partly because of that changeover.
A factory transition can depress deliveries even when customer interest has not changed: lines are reconfigured, inventory is constrained and vehicles may spend longer in transit or preparation. That is the strongest evidence for a temporary supply-side component in the 2025 decline.

The same filing cites lower average selling prices and higher financing incentives. Tesla’s automotive revenue fell 15% in the second quarter of 2025 and 18% in the first half, figures that reflect financial performance rather than a simple vehicle-count change. More discounts can support volume, but they also indicate that Tesla had to work harder to close transactions and earn less per vehicle.
Competition became more intense
BYD’s scale and the wider field of Chinese and other electric-vehicle makers gave buyers more alternatives. Competition matters especially when a manufacturer is changing over a high-volume model: customers who would once have waited for a new Model Y can choose another brand instead.

U.S. incentives expired
Associated Press reporting also identifies expiring U.S. tax credits as a pressure on demand. A credit expiration can pull purchases forward before the deadline and leave a weaker order pipeline afterward; its effect depends on the vehicle, buyer and applicable rules.
Brand backlash added another reported pressure
The Associated Press reported consumer backlash associated with Elon Musk’s political activity as another contributing factor. That is not a company-reported causal measurement, so it should be treated as a reported demand pressure rather than a precisely quantified share of the decline. Its relevance is greatest where buyers have abundant competing choices.

Both explanations fit the evidence, but they describe different parts of the downturn. The Model Y changeover explains why first-half 2025 supply was disrupted and why a large number of Model 3/Y cash deliveries disappeared from the period. It does not explain why Tesla underperformed a stable European market across several months, why prices and incentives moved against the company, or why competition and brand concerns were reported as additional pressures.
The fairest conclusion is that Tesla had a temporary execution shock layered on top of weaker demand conditions. Treating the entire decline as a factory pause is too optimistic; treating every missing delivery as permanent lost demand is too pessimistic.
Has BYD overtaken Tesla?
On the 2025 volume comparison reported by the Associated Press, yes: BYD sold 2.26 million vehicles, ahead of Tesla’s 1.64 million deliveries, and Tesla no longer held the global battery-electric-vehicle volume lead.

The wording still needs care. The published BYD figure is described as vehicles sold, while Tesla’s figure is its vehicle-delivery total, and company reporting conventions can differ. The important competitive fact is the change in leadership on the global BEV-volume comparison, not a claim that the two companies have identical product mixes, prices or profits.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Did Tesla sales recover in 2026?
Tesla delivered 480,126 vehicles in the second quarter of 2026, up 25% from the second quarter of 2025 and its second straight quarterly gain. That is a meaningful improvement after the 2025 trough and suggests the Model Y transition no longer had the same disruptive effect.
It is not yet proof of a durable global turnaround. The available evidence does not include a third-quarter 2026 delivery release as of October 1, 2026, so a full-year conclusion would be premature. A sustained recovery would need to show that higher deliveries persist without relying disproportionately on lower prices or incentives.
How to interpret Tesla’s sales headlines
Use four separate tests rather than treating one delivery number as the whole story:
- Volume: compare annual deliveries with quarterly trends and the prior year.
- Geography: check whether weakness is concentrated in Europe, the United States or spread globally.
- Execution: look for factory changeovers, model launches, pricing changes and incentives that can move deliveries temporarily.
- Competition and brand: compare Tesla’s position with BYD and other alternatives, while distinguishing reported sentiment effects from measured sales causation.
Tesla itself cautioned in its July 2, 2026 delivery release: “Tesla vehicle deliveries and storage deployments represent only two measures of the Company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results.” Deliveries therefore should not be used as a proxy for revenue, margins or profit without checking the financial statements.
Bottom line
Tesla’s global sales decline is serious: 2025 combined a second annual drop with a loss of the global BEV volume lead, and Europe exposed weakness beyond a single factory disruption. The Model Y changeover explains part of the timing, while competition, incentives, pricing and Musk-related backlash point to broader demand and brand pressure. The Q2 2026 rebound is a real improvement, but the evidence available through October 1 does not yet establish a complete recovery.
