What were the best American cars of the 1980s? There is no single winner that fits every definition of “best.” A period comparison put the Ford Mustang GT, Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z, and Pontiac Firebird Formula head-to-head as all-around GTs, while a separate test focused on handling. Add standout engineering and enthusiast models such as the C4 Corvette and Buick GNX, and the strongest answer is a shortlist chosen by what you value in a car.
How to judge the best American cars of the 1980s
“Best” can mean a rewarding road car, a sharp handler, a distinctive powertrain, or a model that marked an important engineering or design moment. Period tests also measured different things: Car and Driver’s 1987 comparison asked which car made the best all-around GT, while its 1984 test concentrated on handling. Neither supports a single decade-wide ranking.
That distinction matters because performance figures and track measurements do not capture the whole experience. In the 1987 comparison, the editors considered freeway cruising, ordinary road use, and autocross as well as measured performance. As editor Rich Ceppos put it, “A skidpad number can’t reveal how much satisfaction a car delivers on a mountain road; a 0-to-60 time offers no insight into an engine’s refinement in the daily stop-and-go.” (Car and Driver, 1987)
The all-around GT contenders: Mustang GT, Camaro IROC-Z, and Firebird Formula
Car and Driver’s 1987 test is the clearest period comparison of the decade’s American sporty cars. The editors asked manufacturers for their best all-around GT, limited the field to three-door cars, and otherwise allowed choices in drivetrain, suspension, and options. Three editors and manufacturer engineers took the cars on a two-day, 400-mile drive from Los Angeles to Palm Springs and back, then held an autocross. The magazine called the contest the closest-fought comparison in recent memory. The IROC-Z finished third, though the editors noted that it had improved significantly. (Car and Driver, 1987)

Ford Mustang GT
The Mustang GT belongs on a shortlist for buyers who want a broad-use American GT rather than a car judged by one isolated number. The 1987 comparison treated it as a direct rival to the Camaro and Firebird across both road driving and autocross. The test also made an important distinction within the Mustang range: the LX could keep essential performance hardware while looking less conspicuous and costing less. The GT and LX should not be treated as identical versions of the same proposition. (Car and Driver, 1987)
Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z
The IROC-Z was a distinct performance model, not a label that makes every 1980s Camaro equivalent. Road & Track’s 2026 retrospective describes the IROC-Z’s 5.0-liter V8 at 215 hp and 279 lb-ft; those are retrospective model figures, not results from Car and Driver’s 1987 head-to-head test. (Road & Track, 2026)

Chevrolet dates the modernized Camaro’s arrival to 1982, when it added electronic fuel injection; that year’s Z28 also served as the Indy 500 pace car. These milestones give the model significance beyond its place in the 1987 comparison. (Chevrolet heritage history)
Pontiac Firebird Formula
The Firebird Formula completed the three-car 1987 GT field alongside the Mustang GT and Camaro IROC-Z. It is the right pick to consider if you want the third direct contender from that unusually close period contest, rather than a model selected through a different test’s priorities. The source does not establish a decade-wide numerical ranking among the three. (Car and Driver, 1987)

Handling-focused choices: Z28, Corvette, Mustang SVO, and Fiero
Car and Driver’s 1984 handling test included the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and Corvette, Dodge Daytona Turbo Z, Ford Mustang SVO, and Pontiac Fiero 2M4. The magazine cautioned that track data cannot by itself identify the best road car, and that skidpad grip is not the same as handling. This test answers a narrower question than the 1987 GT comparison. (Car and Driver, 1984)
Chevrolet Camaro Z28
The Z28 drew a favorable subjective response in the 1984 handling test for its grip, direct controls, manageable reactions, and forgiving limits. But the test car was not the intended five-speed: after that car was stolen, the magazine used an automatic replacement, and a fuel-delivery problem arose during testing. Those circumstances make the test useful evidence of the Z28’s character, but a limited basis for a definitive ranking. (Car and Driver, 1984)

Chevrolet Corvette C4
The redesigned C4 Corvette arrived for 1984. Chevrolet presents the new generation as a step forward in handling, aerodynamics, and performance, making it a natural choice for readers who put sports-car engineering and the Corvette name ahead of pony-car practicality. (Chevrolet heritage history)
Ford Mustang SVO
Ford conceived the Mustang SVO as a well-rounded, high-speed grand tourer, with the comfort and breadth associated with long-distance European GTs. Car and Driver praised its seating position, comfortable seats, and controls in the 1984 test, but recorded substantial turbo lag and brake fade under hard use. It is a compelling choice for its engineering intent and distinct character, not an unqualified track-day winner. (Car and Driver, 1984)

Pontiac Fiero 2M4
The Fiero 2M4 earned a place in the same 1984 handling field as the Z28, Corvette, Daytona Turbo Z, and Mustang SVO. Its inclusion makes it worth considering for a handling-oriented shortlist, but the available test evidence does not justify assigning it a universal “best” title based on track figures alone. Buick GNX
The 1987 Buick GNX is a specialist performance choice with a strong place in enthusiast discussions. Road & Track’s 2026 retrospective describes it as a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 producing 300 hp and 380 lb-ft. Those figures apply to the GNX as described by that retrospective; they should not be transferred to the ordinary Grand National or treated as independent head-to-head test results. (Road & Track, 2026)
Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe
For a design shaped by racing, consider the 1986 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe. Chevrolet says it was created for stock-car racing and that its sloping rear window served an aerodynamic purpose. It offers a different kind of appeal from the Mustang and Camaro: a stock-car-inspired personal coupe with a distinctive roofline. (Chevrolet heritage history)
Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette
The Callaway Twin Turbo was a notable Corvette specialist option, introduced in June 1986 as RPO B2K and available through selected Chevrolet dealers. The National Corvette Museum gives its output as 345 hp and 465 lb-ft, and reports that 510 were built from 1987 through 1991. Because that production span includes years outside the 1980s, it is best treated as an enthusiast footnote to the decade rather than a strictly 1980s-only model. (National Corvette Museum, 2022)

| Your priority | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| All-around road and GT use | 1987 Ford Mustang GT, Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z, or Pontiac Firebird Formula | These were the direct contenders in Car and Driver’s period comparison across road use and autocross. |
| Handling and driver feedback | Camaro Z28, Mustang SVO, Corvette C4, or Fiero 2M4 | All appeared in the 1984 handling test, which emphasized the limits of track-only measures. |
| Distinctive turbo performance | 1987 Buick GNX | A specialist model with retrospective output figures specific to the GNX. |
| Racing-influenced shape | 1986 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe | Chevrolet identifies its sloping rear window as serving an aerodynamic purpose for stock-car racing. |
| Rare Corvette specialty option | Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette | An officially sanctioned option with production from 1987 through 1991, crossing the decade boundary. |
For the best all-round answer to “What were the best American cars of the 1980s?”, start with the Mustang GT, IROC-Z, and Firebird Formula because they were tested directly against one another as GTs. Choose from the handling-test group if control and feedback matter more than broad GT ability; choose the GNX, Aerocoupe, or Callaway when a particular powertrain, design, or enthusiast story is the point.
