If the styling or direction of today’s muscle cars isn’t for you, the right alternative depends on what you want to keep: a domestic V8 and manual, all-weather traction, track ability, or a more practical cabin. For a new V8 coupe, start with the Ford Mustang GT. For a different formula, consider the two-seat Nissan Z or Toyota GR Supra; if you want the outgoing Camaro or Challenger, shop the used market.

The Mustang figures are for the 2025 GT, as reported by Car and Driver. Charger output figures are Dodge’s announced 2026 specifications, not independent test results. Z and Supra prices, cargo figures, and other comparison values come from Toyota’s 2026 U.S. comparison; confirm trim, destination charges, regional differences, and dealer availability. The BMW M240i figure and comparison are described by Edmunds. Used-car character comparisons draw on MotorTrend’s comparison, which reflects its experience with the previous generation. Horsepower alone does not determine which car will feel right.
If you want a new domestic V8 coupe, start with the Mustang GT
The Mustang is the straightforward choice if the point of shopping is to keep a V8, rear-drive coupe and the option of a manual transmission. Car and Driver lists the 2025 GT at 480 hp and 415 lb-ft from its 5.0-liter V8; the optional performance exhaust raises those figures to 486 hp and 418 lb-ft. V8 versions offer a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic.
That makes the GT a continuity pick, not an escape from Mustang styling. If the Mustang’s design is what you want to avoid, look instead at the smaller two-seat coupes, a premium BMW, or a used Camaro or Challenger. Performance figures and equipment vary by model year and package, so compare the exact car on offer.

Consider the new Charger if you want AWD and a larger car
The redesigned Charger takes a different route from the outgoing Hemi-powered Charger and Challenger. Dodge’s announced 2026 gas SIXPACK versions use a turbocharged inline-six, not a V8, and come with standard AWD. Dodge lists 420 hp and 468 lb-ft for the R/T, and 550 hp and 531 lb-ft for the Scat Pack.
For the Scat Pack, Dodge states targets of 3.9 seconds to 60 mph and 12.2 seconds for the quarter mile. Those are manufacturer targets, not independent test results. The larger, redesigned body, AWD, and different engine may appeal if you want a broad muscle-car silhouette and more everyday utility; whether it feels right is a test-drive question. Dodge framed the styling as a reinvention: “The design of the new Charger is about respect and reinvention,” said Fabio Catone, Head of Brand for Dodge in Europe, in the company’s July 9, 2026 design release.

Choose the Z or Supra if you are ready for a two-seat sports coupe
The Nissan Z and Toyota GR Supra are rear-wheel-drive, two-seat coupes, not practical four-seat substitutes. Toyota’s 2026 U.S. comparison lists the Z Sport at $42,970 starting MSRP with 400 hp, 6.9 cu. ft. of cargo space, and EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 22 mpg. It lists the GR Supra 3.0 at $58,300 starting MSRP with 382 hp, 10.2 cu. ft. of cargo space, and 25 mpg combined. These are listed figures, not a promise of local transaction price or availability.
The Z has the lower listed starting price and more horsepower; the Supra has more listed cargo capacity and higher estimated combined fuel economy. Both give up the rear seat. Toyota says its vehicle information applies to mainland U.S. vehicles, may differ elsewhere, and can change; check the current listing and dealer supply before deciding.

Look at the BMW 2 Series or M2 for a smaller premium coupe
A BMW 2 Series changes the category as well as the size: it is a smaller premium coupe, not a like-for-like V8 muscle car. Edmunds describes it as smaller than the Mustang and lists the M240i at 386 hp; it describes the M2 as the more intense option. BMW’s U.S. technical page lists the M2 at 180.3 inches long, 74.3 inches wide, and 3,814 pounds curb weight, with automatic fuel economy of 16 city and 23 highway mpg; BMW notes that some fuel-economy data are provisional. Check the exact model year, trim, and drivetrain, including whether an xDrive version is offered for the car you are considering.
This route makes sense if compact dimensions, rear-drive character, or BMW’s cabin presentation matter more than the traditional American V8 brief. Pricing and ownership costs depend on model and trim, so compare current local figures rather than assuming it is a budget substitute.

Buy a used Camaro or Challenger for the outgoing formula
The final-generation Camaro and Challenger are used-car choices; both are out of production. Their strengths differ, so decide which compromise you prefer before narrowing by engine or trim.
Camaro: handling first
MotorTrend describes the Camaro as the most rewarding of the traditional muscle coupes on a race course. The cost of that focus is a cramped cabin and poor outward visibility. It is the stronger starting point for a buyer who values handling and accepts those everyday compromises. Compare the exact trim and tires: MotorTrend’s assessment is based on its experience with the previous generation, not a test of every used example.

Challenger: retro style and roomier rear seat
MotorTrend characterizes the Challenger as roomier but less athletic than the Camaro. Its retro styling, more livable back seat, and available V8 and Hellcat power make it a better match for buyers prioritizing presence, cruising, or passenger space over nimble handling. It is out of production, so availability and condition depend on the used market.
Check the car, not just the badge
For any used Camaro or Challenger, review the vehicle history, arrange a pre-purchase inspection, and get an insurance quote. Pay particular attention to modified examples and high-performance trims. These checks are prudent for an individual used car; they are not a claim that a specific model is unreliable.
