Affordable electric cars in 2025 did not all offer the same kind of value. The cheapest model was not necessarily the best buy, and advertised range could vary significantly between trims or drivetrains.
Using U.S. model-year 2025 pricing before destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees, and incentives, the strongest choices ran from the $28,140 Nissan Leaf to the $45,095 Volkswagen ID.4. For most buyers, the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV LT 1 FWD offered the best overall balance of price, range, and practicality.

The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV LT 1 FWD started at $33,600 and had an EPA-estimated range of 319 miles. That combination made it the most convincing all-around affordable EV in this group.
#1 Best Overall
- Charge with Confidence: ChargePoint builds reliable, flexible EV charging stations for home, business, and fleets. Get 24/7 support and access to hundreds of thousands of North American charging locations.
- Charge Smart: With the user-friendly ChargePoint Mobile App, you can control your electric car charger, manage reminders, connect to smart home devices, find stations, get data and charging info, and access the latest features. Note: WiFi is needed for certain functionalities and troubleshooting steps if connectivity issues arise.
- Vast Network: Wherever you go, ChargePoint’s network includes 274k+ stations across North America and Europe and 565k+ roaming partner stations.
- Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
- Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
It is a proper compact crossover rather than a small hatchback, with seating for five and up to 57.2 cubic feet of cargo volume. Standard equipment included a large 17.7-inch center touchscreen, an 11.5-kW onboard charger, and adaptive cruise control on the LT 1.
The available all-wheel-drive version was rated at 307 miles, so buyers should not use the 319-mile figure for every Equinox EV. The FWD model is the range leader.
Why it stands out
- More than 300 miles of EPA range at a price below most long-range electric SUVs.
- Useful passenger and cargo space for family duty.
- Standard driver-assistance and charging equipment on the base LT 1.
What you give up
The base trim is functional rather than luxurious. Heated seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging, and other convenience features are available on higher trims. Also, do not confuse the 2025 starting price of $33,600 with the later 2026 starting price of $34,995.
2. Hyundai Kona Electric: best small electric SUV
The 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric started at $32,975. It is the better fit for shoppers who want a smaller, easier-to-park crossover and do not need the Equinox EV’s extra interior space.
The important detail is that the Kona’s range varies substantially by trim:
| Trim | EPA-estimated range |
|---|---|
| SE | 200 miles |
| N Line | 230 miles |
| SEL and Limited | 261 miles |
The base SE has the lowest price, but its 200-mile rating comes with a meaningful compromise. The SEL is the more sensible recommendation for buyers who expect occasional longer trips and want the full 261-mile rating.

- Flex Level 1 EV Charger - The EVDANCE Level 1 electric car charger is compatible with J1772 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles (North American Standard). *Tesla requires a SAE J1772 adapter.
- Convenient to Use - This charger has both NEMA 6-20 plug for 16A 240V charging (3.68kW, 10-12 mi/h) and a NEMA 6-20 to 5-15 plug adapter for 12A 120V charging (1.44kW, 2-5 mi/h). The included bag makes it easier to carry on the go. It also has a 25ft cable length, you can use it flexibly from anywhere in the garage or driveway.
- Check Your Outlet Type -This charger works with standard 120V NEMA 5-15/5-20 outlets (2-5 mph charging speed) and 240V NEMA 6-20 outlets (10-12 mph) . It's not compatible with NEMA 6-15/10-30/14-30/14-50/6-50 outlets – you'll need a NEMA 14-50/14-30/10-30/6-50 to 6-20 adapter (sold separately) to connect.
- Compatible EV Models -This EV charger works with most major electric vehicles, including Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Audi, Nissan Ariya, Rivian R1S, Kia, and others. However, it's not compatible with Mini Cooper Electric Hardtop,Toyota Prus Prime/Z4X/RAV4Prime, Porsche Taycan Base/4S/Turbo/Turbo S or Tesla models (Tesla requires a J1772 to Tesla Adapter, sold separately). For a full list of compatible models, check out the Full Compatibility List on our product page.
- Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.
The Kona Electric’s compact dimensions and efficiency are its main advantages. Its weakness is value at the base of the range: paying less gets you a smaller battery and considerably less range. Hyundai also states that its MSRP excludes freight, tax, title, license fees, options, and dealer pricing.

3. Nissan Leaf: cheapest new EV, with serious limits
The 2025 Nissan Leaf S had a starting MSRP of $28,140, making it the lowest-priced new EV in this comparison. Nissan rated it at 149 miles of range. The more expensive Leaf SV Plus started at $36,190 and had a 212-mile rating.
The Leaf S uses a 40-kWh battery, while Plus models use a 60-kWh battery. That makes the S a reasonable choice for a commuter with home charging, a short daily drive, and a strict purchase-price limit.
The charging connector is the deal-breaker
The 2025 Leaf uses CHAdeMO for DC fast charging. Nissan’s charging information lists approximately 40 minutes to reach 80% for the 40-kWh model and approximately 45 minutes for the 60-kWh model under specified charging conditions.
The issue is not simply charging speed. Most newer U.S. EVs use CCS or NACS, while the Leaf still requires a CHAdeMO-equipped DC fast-charging station. Availability is much more limited in many areas. Check the connector at every planned stop before attempting a road trip; a generic “DC fast charger” label does not guarantee compatibility.
For local driving, the Leaf’s low price can make sense. For frequent highway travel, its 149-mile range and CHAdeMO network limitations make it a poor general-purpose choice.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
4. Kia Niro EV: best polished compact crossover
The 2025 Kia Niro EV Wind started at $39,600, while the Wave started at $44,600, both before destination charges. Its 64.8-kWh battery was EPA-rated at 253 miles.
The Niro EV provides a conventional compact-crossover layout, a practical cabin, and a 253-mile range even in the entry Wind trim. It is a more polished choice than the Leaf and gives buyers a useful range without stepping up to a larger SUV.
However, it is substantially more expensive than the Kona Electric and Equinox EV. At full MSRP, it is not one of the lowest-cost new EVs. It becomes more compelling when dealer discounts or lease incentives reduce the effective cost.

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro started at $45,095, excluding a $1,425 destination charge. The rear-drive Pro had an EPA-estimated range of 291 miles. An all-wheel-drive Pro started at $48,995.
The ID.4’s strengths are its roomy cabin, comfortable ride, and familiar SUV proportions. It is a good option for buyers who want more interior space and a relaxed driving character rather than the lowest possible purchase price.
Its affordability depends heavily on the transaction. Lease programs and dealer discounts could make an ID.4 much cheaper than its MSRP suggests, but a low monthly payment can hide a large down payment, acquisition fee, restrictive mileage allowance, or disposition fee.

The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
Compare the total lease cost, including all required payments and fees, rather than looking only at the advertised monthly figure. Volkswagen also temporarily halted ID.4 sales in early 2025 while addressing a door-handle recall; sales resumed after repaired inventory became available.

1. Separate MSRP from the real purchase price
Every price in this article excludes at least some combination of destination charges, taxes, title, registration, dealer fees, options, and mandatory packages. Ask the dealer for a complete buyer’s order before comparing offers.
2. Match the range to your driving
EPA range is a useful comparison number, not a promise of identical real-world results. Cold weather, highway speeds, hills, climate control, payload, and battery condition can reduce usable range. More importantly, confirm the range for the exact trim and drivetrain: a Kona SE is not a 261-mile vehicle, and an AWD Equinox EV is not rated at 319 miles.
3. Check the charging connector and home setup
Most owners do most charging at home. Before buying, confirm that your electrical panel, parking arrangement, and utility rate support the charging equipment you plan to install. If you need public DC fast charging, verify the connector and charging locations along your regular routes. The Leaf’s CHAdeMO requirement is the clearest example of why this matters.
4. Treat incentives as conditional
For 2025 purchases, the federal New Clean Vehicle Credit could be worth up to $7,500, but eligibility depended on the vehicle, battery sourcing, final assembly, vehicle price, buyer income, and the specific vehicle identification number. Buyers needed to verify the exact vehicle rather than assuming that every example of a model qualified.

Eligible buyers could transfer the credit to a participating dealer at the time of sale, reducing the transaction amount immediately. But the federal New Clean Vehicle Credit is no longer available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A vehicle placed in service after that date could qualify only under applicable transition rules if it had been acquired by September 30, 2025. A new 2025 EV should not automatically be advertised as $7,500 cheaper.
