The Average Monthly New-Car Payment in the U.S. Reached $787 in Q3 2026

The $787 figure is Edmunds’ Q3 2026 average monthly payment for financed new-vehicle purchases in the U.S.—not a universal bill or total ownership cost.

The average monthly payment for a financed new vehicle in the United States reached $787 in the third quarter of 2026, according to Edmunds. That is an average for financed purchases—not a bill every new-car buyer pays—and it does not include ownership costs such as insurance, fuel, maintenance, or registration.

What the $787 average measures

Edmunds’ figure covers new vehicles bought with financing in the U.S. during Q3 2026. It rose from $777 in Q2 2026 and $756 in Q3 2025. The source is Edmunds’ auto-finance analysis, released October 1, 2026: Edmunds’ Q3 2026 auto-finance release.

It is not the average for every new vehicle sold: buyers who paid cash are outside the financed-purchase measure. Nor is $787 the full cost of owning a vehicle. The payment covers the loan installment, while insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration, and other ownership expenses are separate.

Payment, loan size, term, and interest moved together

A monthly payment depends on how much is borrowed, the APR, and how long the loan runs. Edmunds’ Q3 2026 figures put those factors in context:

Measure Q3 2026 Q2 2026 Q3 2025
Average monthly payment $787 $777 $756
Average amount financed $44,664 $44,156 $42,744
Average APR 7.0% 7.0% 7.0%
Average loan term 70.5 months 70.4 months 70.0 months
Average total interest over the loan $9,938 $9,811 $9,442
Share of financed purchases with terms of 84 months or longer 25.5% 23.9% 21.8%
Share of financed purchases with payments of $1,000 or more 21.2% 20.3% 19.1%

All figures are Edmunds’ U.S. averages or shares for the stated quarter. The average APR was unchanged across these three quarters, while the average amount financed and average term edged up. The average total interest reported for Q3 2026 was $9,938 over the life of the loan; it is not an additional monthly charge.

Why a lower payment can cost more overall

Extending a loan term spreads repayment over more months and can reduce the required monthly installment for a given loan amount and APR. But the debt lasts longer, and the borrower may pay more interest over the full term. Edmunds found that 25.5% of financed new-vehicle purchases in Q3 2026 had terms of at least 84 months, up from 21.8% a year earlier.

That trade-off matters because a payment can appear manageable while the total commitment is not. Edmunds’ director of insights, Ivan Drury, cautioned that a long term should not be used to justify a vehicle that does not fit a buyer’s budget when its full cost is considered. The quarter’s averages are descriptive; they do not establish why loan terms or payments changed.

How to compare financing offers

Do not rank offers by monthly payment alone. A longer term can make one offer look cheaper each month even when it means carrying debt longer. Compare the full set of terms on the same vehicle price and assumptions:

  • APR: The annual rate used to calculate borrowing costs.
  • Amount financed: The amount borrowed after the down payment and any other amounts included in the loan.
  • Down payment: A larger down payment generally reduces the amount borrowed, though it also means using more cash upfront.
  • Term: The number of months scheduled for repayment.
  • Monthly payment: The recurring installment under those loan assumptions.
  • Estimated total interest: The financing cost over the entire term, which helps expose the cost of stretching repayment.

Edmunds identifies its auto-loan calculator as a way to vary down payment, loan term, and interest rate, and its APR calculator as a way to estimate lifetime interest. Use consistent inputs when comparing offers, then confirm the lender’s actual terms before signing. Edmunds’ release also recommends shopping around for financing rather than accepting a single offer by default.

How the new-car figure compares with used-car financing

For context, Edmunds reported these Q3 2026 averages for financed used-vehicle purchases. They describe a separate category and should not be treated as directly interchangeable with the new-vehicle averages.

Q3 2026 measure New vehicles Used vehicles
Average monthly payment $787 $582
Average amount financed $44,664 $30,703
Average APR 7.0% 10.6%
Average loan term 70.5 months 70.4 months

The used-vehicle average payment was lower alongside a substantially lower average amount financed, while the average APR was higher. These averages alone do not show which option is cheaper for a particular buyer: vehicle price, loan amount, rate, term, and the condition and costs of the vehicle all matter.

What the trend says—and what it cannot tell you

The Q3 2026 figures show higher average payments and amounts financed than in the prior quarter and year-earlier quarter, with the same reported average APR. They also show more financed buyers taking loans of 84 months or longer and more facing payments of at least $1,000.

Edmunds’ head of insights, Jessica Caldwell, described buyers as continuing to seek new vehicles while adapting to a stretched financing environment, including by allocating more household budget to vehicles and shopping around. The published averages support the trend comparisons, but they do not independently establish the causes of buyer behavior or predict what any individual borrower will be offered.
