Porsche’s case for racing in North America starts with a simple business fact: the United States is its biggest single market, according to Porsche vice president of motorsport Thomas Laudenbach. He says racing also serves technology development, brand visibility and the business itself. That is a commercial rationale—not proof that the program produces a particular financial return.
What Porsche’s Petit Le Mans win says—and what it doesn’t
The Drive reported that Porsche won the 2026 Petit Le Mans, the IMSA season finale, with the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963. Laurens Vanthoor, Kévin Estre and Matt Campbell shared the car in the 10-hour race.

The Drive also reported 17 full-course cautions, describing that total as a Petit Le Mans record, compared with 14 at the event nine years earlier. Those figures are the outlet’s reporting; they are not presented here as independently verified IMSA statistics.

The rationale Laudenbach gave is broader: racing is tied to technology work, the company’s identity and its business presence in a key market.

Why keep racing in North America?
The U.S. matters to Porsche
“The U.S. American market is the biggest single market for Porsche,” Laudenbach told The Drive. He did not attach a sales total or market-share figure to that statement in the article. The point is strategic: a major market gives Porsche a reason to stay visible and active there, even when other manufacturers weigh the costs and benefits differently.
Racing is part of the brand and business
Laudenbach said: “We do not do motorsport for the sake of its own.” He continued: “We do motorsport to drive technology, we do motorsport to show our brand on the racetrack because racing is a part of our brand, and it’s a part of our business.”

That is Porsche’s stated business case, not a quantified return-on-investment claim. It links competition to engineering, marketing and commercial priorities without saying how much each contributes or guaranteeing that every racing effort will be financially successful.

Why other manufacturers may see the calculation differently
The contrast is not simply between automakers that understand racing and those that do not. The available reporting points to different priorities, including how a manufacturer values customer access and what it expects from event facilities.

Hospitality is part of the equation
The Drive reported that Genesis endurance-program leader Cyril Abiteboul criticized the quality of hospitality facilities at circuits used by IMSA. It also relayed, citing Sportscar365, that McLaren wanted more upscale accommodations for entertaining high-dollar clients. The McLaren point is secondary reporting in The Drive’s account, not a direct quote from McLaren in that article.
Those concerns help explain why a racing series’ appeal to a manufacturer may depend on more than track action. Hospitality can matter when teams and brands use events to host customers and business partners. But the reporting does not establish that facility concerns alone determine either company’s racing plans.

The comparison has limits
The reporting gives Porsche’s market and brand rationale, along with facility-related concerns attributed to Genesis and McLaren. It does not provide comparable budgets, financial returns or a complete account of each manufacturer’s priorities. It therefore supports a difference in emphasis, not a claim that Porsche has found a guaranteed formula or that its rivals’ concerns are unfounded.

Porsche left the World Endurance Championship’s Hypercar effort in 2025. In the interview reported by The Drive, Laudenbach said the company had not “turned its back on Le Mans,” but he could not say when a return might happen. He said Porsche could continue in IMSA and that timing would depend on the company’s situation. A Le Mans return date—and the future shape of Porsche’s endurance program—was therefore not settled in that account.

Nick Tandy, a racing driver, told The Drive: “Now it’s definitely Daytona because I love the American culture, I love the American way of racing.” His enthusiasm offers a personal view of the appeal of American racing; it is not a statement of Porsche’s corporate plans.
How to read the story
The Drive’s October 8, 2026 report is based on a conversation with Laudenbach and reporting at Petit Le Mans. The author disclosed attending as Porsche’s guest, useful context for readers weighing the account. The result, attributed statements and reported manufacturer concerns are part of that article; the account does not independently establish program economics or a full comparison of automakers’ racing strategies.
