In iSeeCars’ 2026 study, the average three-year-old used car cost $32,651—$751 more than Toyota’s $31,900 starting MSRP for the 2026 RAV4 LE. That is a striking price comparison, but not a like-for-like quote: one figure is an average of used-car sales, while the other is a manufacturer’s suggested base price for a new vehicle.
What the comparison actually measures
iSeeCars reported an average price of $32,651 for three-year-old used cars in its 2026 study. Toyota lists a $31,900 base MSRP for the 2026 RAV4 LE. Subtracting the two figures puts the used-car average $751 above the new RAV4’s starting MSRP.
The comparison does not mean every three-year-old used car costs more than a new RAV4. Nor does it show that a buyer can purchase a RAV4 for $31,900 in every market: MSRP is not a guaranteed transaction price or an out-the-door total. Local availability, dealer pricing, taxes and fees can change what a buyer pays.
The RAV4 price is specifically for the LE. Toyota’s 2026 RAV4 page lists higher starting MSRPs for other trims:

How used-car prices changed in iSeeCars’ study
iSeeCars compared used cars aged three to 15 years sold in 2019 and 2026, analyzing more than 11.4 million vehicles. It reports that the average three-year-old car rose from $23,624 in 2019 to $32,651 in 2026—an increase of $9,027, or 38.2%. The study’s price changes are not adjusted for inflation, so that percentage is a nominal change, not an inflation-adjusted measure of how much more expensive cars became in real terms.

The shift is also visible at a lower budget threshold. In iSeeCars’ figures, 11.4% of three-year-old vehicles in 2026 were priced below $20,000, compared with 49.4% in 2019. For seven-year-old vehicles in 2026, 53.0% were below $20,000. The study therefore points to older vehicles as a more common place to look when a shopper’s budget is under $20,000; it does not guarantee that a particular car in that price range will be available or suitable.
iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer said, “Today’s used car prices are among the most powerful examples of the affordability challenge facing consumers.” The study does not establish a single cause for the increase, so it would be misleading to attribute the change to one factor alone. iSeeCars’ affordability study describes its sample and methodology.

How a three-year-old RAV4 compares
The all-model average is not the same as the price of a specific model. In iSeeCars’ study table, a three-year-old Toyota RAV4 averaged $29,190 in 2026, up from $20,825 in 2019. That 2026 study-table figure is below the $32,651 average across all three-year-old cars.
A separate iSeeCars RAV4 pricing page displays $30,129 for a 2023 RAV4 at age three; that page was accessed October 3, 2026. It is a different displayed estimate from the study-table figure, and the two should not be combined or presented as one price. Both figures illustrate why the headline’s all-car average should not be treated as a quote for a used RAV4. The study’s RAV4 comparison provides its model-table figures; the separate iSeeCars RAV4 pricing page provides the other estimate.

How to judge a real used-car offer
A national average cannot tell you whether a specific car is fairly priced. Compare the actual vehicle and the full cost of buying it with the new-car offer you could actually obtain. Consider:
- Model year, trim and included equipment.
- Mileage, condition, accident history and maintenance records.
- Local availability and the seller’s actual price.
- Taxes, fees and any dealer add-ons in the out-the-door total.
- Financing terms and warranty coverage.
The sources establish a national used-car average and Toyota’s base MSRP, but do not provide local dealer quotes or a total-cost-of-ownership comparison. Those figures alone cannot establish whether buying new or used will cost less overall for you.

Use a history report and a mechanical inspection for different checks
The FTC says vehicle-history reports may include ownership history, accidents, repairs and salvage status. It points shoppers to NMVTIS-approved providers for title, insurance-loss and salvage information, while noting that other providers may add accident or repair details. The FTC does not endorse specific services. A report can help flag history issues, but it is not a mechanical inspection.
The FTC advises arranging an independent inspection by a mechanic, even if a car is described as certified or dealer-inspected, because history reports typically do not list mechanical problems. A checklist can help organize questions, but it does not replace professional inspection; the FTC notes that checklists are available in books, magazines and websites. Check mileage against records
Compare the odometer reading with maintenance or inspection records, and use a history report to look for mileage discrepancies, as NHTSA advises. A mismatch is a reason to ask questions and verify the vehicle’s history before committing. NHTSA’s odometer guidance outlines this check.
Check more than one pricing source
The FTC identifies Edmunds, Kelley Blue Book and NADA Guides as commercial sources of new- and used-vehicle pricing information, while stating it does not endorse them. Use pricing references as context, then compare the specific car’s condition, mileage, trim and local offers rather than treating any guide or national average as a final valuation. The FTC’s used-car guidance names these pricing resources.
