The PGM V8 is an Australian-built motorcycle powered by a 1,996cc, 90-degree V8. Maltec Performance Engineering claims 334 hp at 12,800 rpm and 214 Nm at 9,500 rpm, measured at the countershaft sprocket—not at the crankshaft. Its Yamaha-derived cylinder and head hardware sits on a purpose-built engine foundation, making it more than two R1 engines joined together.
What engine is in the PGM V8?
Maltec Performance Engineering lists a liquid-cooled, 90-degree V8 displacing 1,996cc. Its 77 x 54mm bore and stroke, 13:1 compression ratio and DOHC five-valve cylinder heads make it a bespoke motorcycle engine rather than a conventional production-bike powerplant.
- Induction: Eight 45mm Mikuni drive-by-wire throttle bodies.
- Engine management: MoTeC M130 ECU and software.
- Exhaust: Two titanium 4-2-1 systems.
BikeBound’s 2026 technical account describes Yamaha R1-derived cylinders, heads, pistons and rods, combined with a purpose-built crankcase, one-piece flat-plane crankshaft and re-engineered transmission. That component history comes from a secondary technical feature; Maltec’s specification page does not enumerate donor parts. So “two R1 engines bolted together” is a rough shorthand, not a precise description of the design. BikeBound’s technical feature
How much power does the PGM V8 make?
Maltec claims 334 hp at 12,800 rpm and 214 Nm at 9,500 rpm, with both figures measured at the countershaft sprocket. The measurement point matters: these are not stated crankshaft-output figures, and they should not be compared directly with crank-rated output figures without accounting for the different measurement locations. New Atlas reported the same output as 334 hp (249 kW) and 214 Nm in 2015. That period report also described the 242kg figure as fully fueled wet weight. New Atlas’s 2015 report
Maltec does not publish a numerical top speed or a 0–100 time. Its performance page instead asks, “How brave are you?” That prompt is not a performance measurement. The builder also calls the PGM V8 the “worlds most powerful production motorcycle,” but does not define “production” or provide a comparison method. Treat that as the builder’s claim, not a verified present-day world record: Australian Motorcycle News reported in 2016 that there was then only one example. Australian Motorcycle News’s 2016 report

What chassis and components does it use?
The builder lists a chrome-moly tube trellis at the front and CNC-machined aluminum at the rear. Suspension is by adjustable Öhlins FGRT301 48mm upside-down forks and an Öhlins TTX Mk2 rear shock with custom linkage. Maltec lists Michelin Pilot Power 3 tires in 120/70ZR-17 front and 190/50ZR-17 rear sizes. Before buying replacements, confirm the model is available and verify size, load and speed suitability, and fitment for the specific motorcycle with a qualified tire supplier; the listed specification does not establish that every example retains its original setup.
Can you buy a PGM V8 motorcycle?
Maltec’s current page invites prospective owners to get in touch through a “Start your journey to own” contact form, but it does not publish a current price, delivery estimate or stock count. BikeBound’s October 7, 2026 feature cites an earlier approximate starting price of US$180,000; that is historical secondary reporting, not a current offer or quote. Is the PGM V8 road legal?
Australian Motorcycle News reported in January 2016 that engineer Paul Maloney had spent eight years designing and building the bike, and that the prototype was then fully registered with VicRoads and working. That is a dated report about one motorcycle and its status in Victoria at that time; it does not establish present registration, availability or road legality in other jurisdictions. Australian Motorcycle News’s 2016 report
AMCN quoted motorcycle journalist Alan Cathcart describing the bike as “the single most impressive piece of multi-cylinder madness I’ve ever had the privilege of riding” and “thoroughly practical and totally rideable in real world conditions.” Those are Cathcart’s riding impressions as reported in 2016, not instrumented performance data or a current road-approval determination.
