Yes—the Alpine A108 was the direct predecessor to the original A110, and it established the Berlinette shape that later became famous on the A110. Alpine dates the A108 to 1958 and describes the A110, unveiled in 1962, as its evolution. But the A108 was more than an early Berlinette: it was a small model family with several body styles and its own sporting purpose.
How the A108 led to the A110
Alpine’s model history identifies the A108 as the car that preceded the A110, calling the later model an evolution of it. Alpine says the A110 was unveiled at the 1962 Paris Motor Show. The connection is clearest in the Berlinette: Alpine dates the A108 Berlinette’s introduction to September 1960, making it the first of the pair to wear the compact coupé form later associated with the A110. Alpine’s model history and its A108 press account document that lineage.
The A108 was a family of body styles
It is easy to remember the A108 only as a Berlinette precursor, but Alpine’s account describes a broader range. The model family included open and closed cars, with versions appearing over several years.
| Body style | Development noted by Alpine |
|---|---|
| Cabriolet | Part of the A108 range; Alpine’s press account dates the model family to 1958. |
| Hardtop and 2+2 coupé | Followed in 1959, according to Alpine’s press account. |
| Sport cabriolet and sport coupé | Sport versions followed in 1960, according to Alpine’s press account. |
| Berlinette | Introduced in September 1960, according to Alpine’s press account. |
The Berlinette was aimed at customers who intended to use the car in motorsport. That intention helps explain why its importance is not just visual: it joined Alpine’s lightweight coupé form to a sporting role before the A110 made the combination far better known.

What changed mechanically from A108 to A110?
The A108 drew on Renault Dauphine mechanical components. Alpine’s press account lists rear-mounted four-cylinder engines ranging from 845 to 998 cc, with output variants from 27 to 70 PS. Those figures describe the range of versions, not one engine specification common to every A108.
The original A110 marked a donor-component shift. Alpine’s retrospective says it used the Renault 8 engine and many Renault 8 components, rather than the A108’s Dauphine basis. That change links the A110 to a newer Renault platform while preserving the Alpine approach of adapting Renault mechanicals for a light sports car. See Alpine’s retrospective and the A110 model account.

When did the A108 appear?
Alpine’s standard model date is 1958, which its official model history and press material use for the A108. One other Alpine-history timeline says the convertible appeared in 1957. The dates may reflect different ways of identifying an initial appearance versus the model’s standard date, but the available accounts do not resolve that distinction. It is safest to describe the A108 as a 1958 model in Alpine’s official history and attribute the earlier convertible date to RenaultAlpine.co.uk’s car-history timeline.
The model then developed in stages: Alpine says hardtop and 2+2 coupé versions followed in 1959, sport versions in 1960, and the Berlinette appeared in September 1960. The A110 arrived next, unveiled in 1962. This chronology shows that the A108 was not merely a design exercise immediately replaced by the A110; it had its own evolving range before the successor appeared.

How many A108s were built?
Two published production accounts give the same A108 total but different date ranges. Alpine Deutschland Presse-Service reported 236 cars built from 1958 to 1965 in its 2016 A108 account. A Renault Media Switzerland production table also lists 236 A108s, but assigns them to 1960–1962. The table’s publication year is not established in the available record, so these figures should be cited to their respective sources rather than combined into a single settled production span.
| Model | Reported production | Scope and attribution |
|---|---|---|
| A108 | 236; 1958–1965 | Alpine Deutschland Presse-Service, 2016. |
| A108 | 236; 1960–1962 | Renault Media Switzerland production table; publication year not established. |
| A110 | 7,579; 1961–1977 | Renault Media Switzerland table, which labels the figures as French Alpine road-car production; publication year not established. |
The A110’s larger historical footprint is also described in broader terms by Alpine Global Media: almost 8,000 built in Dieppe, plus a further 4,000 built under licence in Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and Bulgaria. That account is not directly interchangeable with the French road-car production table, because it includes licensed production outside Dieppe. Neither source says that the A108 total includes licensed cars. The relevant records are the Alpine A108 account, Renault’s production table, and Alpine Global Media’s retrospective.

Why the A108 is easy to overlook
The A110 became the more familiar rally icon, while the A108’s role is quieter but foundational: it established the Berlinette shape and tested Alpine’s combination of Renault-derived mechanicals with a lightweight sporting body. The contrast is not simply predecessor versus successor. The A108 offered a varied body range and introduced the form; the A110 carried that lineage forward with Renault 8 components and a much larger later reputation in competition.
