Europe’s Electric-Car Market Grew in 2025 as Tesla Registrations Fell

Full-year 2025 figures show strong electric-car growth in Europe and falling Tesla registrations—but the exact rates depend on geography and what counts as an EV.

Europe’s electric-car market expanded substantially in 2025, but the often-quoted 26% growth figure is not confirmed by the available full-year sources. The rate changes with the geography and with whether “electric cars” means battery-electric cars alone or also includes plug-in hybrids. Tesla registrations fell in both the EU and a wider European grouping, though by different amounts.

What Europe’s 2025 electric-car figures show

The clearest comparison starts by separating the measures. ACEA’s EU figures count battery-electric passenger cars (BEVs); the International Energy Agency (IEA) uses “electric cars” to include both BEVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). The regional boundaries also differ.

Source and geography Vehicle definition 2025 result
ACEA, EU BEVs 1,880,370 registrations; 17.4% of new EU car registrations, up from a 13.6% share in 2024
IEA, Europe BEVs and PHEVs 4.2 million sales, up more than 30%; 28% of new-car sales
Cinco Días, EU+EFTA+UK+Switzerland, citing ACEA Electric cars; the report describes the grouping’s registrations 2.58 million, up 29.7%

These are not competing estimates of one identical market. The IEA’s Europe total covers a broader region and includes PHEVs; ACEA’s figure is EU-only and BEV-only. Cinco Días reports a separate EU+EFTA+UK+Switzerland grouping. The sources therefore do not establish a single Europe-wide full-year growth rate of exactly 26%.

Why “EV sales” needs a definition

“Electric vehicle” can refer to different powertrains in sales reporting. A BEV runs on electricity stored in a battery and is charged from an external power source. A PHEV also plugs in but has a combustion engine. A conventional hybrid does not plug in and is counted separately from BEVs and PHEVs in ACEA’s powertrain breakdown.

For a full list of compatible models, check out the Full Compatibility List on our product page.
  • Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.

That distinction matters to the market picture. In the EU, hybrids were the largest powertrain category in 2025, with 34.5% of new-car registrations; BEVs accounted for 17.4%. Petrol and diesel together fell to 35.5%, down from 45.2% in 2024. These are shares of new registrations, not the proportions of all cars on the road.

ACEA also reports that total new EU car registrations increased 1.8% in 2025, while remaining below pre-pandemic volumes. The BEV share rising from 13.6% to 17.4% describes a larger slice of new registrations; it is not the same statistic as growth in the number of electric cars in service.

How much did Tesla registrations fall?

ACEA-derived figures reported by CnEVPost show different declines depending on the territory counted:

Geography Tesla registrations in 2025 Year-over-year change
EU+EFTA+UK 238,656, compared with 326,525 in 2024 Down 26.9%
EU only 150,504, compared with 242,436 in 2024 Down 37.9%

The 26.9% decline applies to EU+EFTA+UK, not the EU alone. It is close to the headline’s 26% figure, but the available sources do not verify that Tesla’s decline was the origin of the headline’s electric-car growth claim.

In the same wider EU+EFTA+UK grouping, BYD registrations reached 187,657 in 2025, up 268.6% from 50,912, according to CnEVPost’s ACEA-derived figures. That shows a competitor growing quickly in the same market; it does not establish that BYD’s gains caused Tesla’s decline.

Why are Tesla sales falling in Europe?

The full-year registration figures measure what happened, not why. They do not isolate the influence of brand perception, product availability, model age, competition, factory downtime, or any other factor.

AP’s report on April 2025 registrations discussed possible contributors at that time: backlash toward CEO Elon Musk, an aging lineup, intensifying competition, and temporary factory shutdowns during the Model Y upgrade. That was contemporaneous context for one month, not proof of the relative causes of Tesla’s full-year decline. It should not be treated as a definitive explanation for calendar-year results.

How to read the headline’s 26% claim

  • As a full-year Europe-wide market growth rate: not confirmed by the cited full-year sources. The IEA reports growth of more than 30% for its broader Europe grouping and BEV-plus-PHEV definition; Cinco Días reports 29.7% for EU+EFTA+UK+Switzerland.
  • As an EU BEV result: ACEA confirms a 17.4% share and 1,880,370 registrations in 2025, but those figures are not a 26% growth rate.
  • As Tesla’s decline: 26.9% is reported for Tesla in EU+EFTA+UK, while the EU-only fall is 37.9%.

For any comparison, check four things before using a percentage: its geography, which powertrains it counts, whether it describes registrations or market share, and whether it covers a month or the full calendar year.
