Later reports describe even quicker MR2 passes, so the title’s superlative is historical, not a verified current worldwide record.
Which MR2 ran the 7.982-second quarter mile?
Carscoops reported on August 8, 2021, that a heavily modified second-generation Toyota MR2 associated with the BoostedBoiz completed the quarter mile in 7.982 seconds at 181.94 mph. That is the specific run most directly tied to the seven-second headline. The time is the car’s elapsed time over a quarter mile; 181.94 mph is its reported speed at the finish, not a lap time or a measure of its top speed. Carscoops’ 2021 report
It was an MR2 by chassis, but not by engine origin: the build used Honda K-series power. That distinction matters whenever someone calls it the fastest “Toyota-powered MR2.” The 2021 report describes the project progressing from a K24 to a K20 as the car was rebuilt; it should not be confused with an all-Toyota-powered MR2.
How the BoostedBoiz MR2 was developed
According to Carscoops, the project began with a stock SW20. Its builders replaced the original engine with a Honda K24 and developed a turbo setup. Over time, the car gained a sequential transmission, a roll cage and ball-bearing turbos. For the later attempt covered in the article, the build was reworked around a K20, a larger single turbo and a water-to-air intercooler. The report also describes changes to weight distribution and fuel and water placement intended to help keep the car under control.

- This plastic model requires assembly and painting. Adhesives, tools, paints, etc., sold separately
- 1/24 scale unpainted plastic assembly kit
- Finished Size: 6.5 x 3.0 inches (164.5 x 77 mm)
- Number of parts: Approximately 119 pieces
- Includes window and fender paint seals
Those details describe one evolving custom drag car, not a complete specification or a proven recipe for another MR2. The account does, however, show why the headline number belongs to a particular combination of chassis, engine swap and race setup rather than to a stock MR2 model.
“Fastest MR2” depends on the category and date
The 7.982-second 2021 pass was not the same achievement as the quickest all-Toyota-powered MR2. Toyota UK’s November 2020 profile covered Nathan Freke’s separate MR2, which used Toyota’s 3S-GTE engine. It reported an 8.718-second pass and later updated the article with an 8.317-second run at 173 mph. Toyota UK also noted that the Honda-powered BoostedBoiz car had broken the overall record. Freke described a different engineering challenge. He said his team altered the engine’s rod ratio and used a 2.2-litre crankshaft. He also discussed how the MR2’s rear-engine layout can make the front end lift at high power. As Toyota UK quoted Freke: “To a point, the modified Toyota MR2 is a great basis for a drag car because the engine is over the rear wheels.” Those comments refer to his all-Toyota build, not the BoostedBoiz car.
Later reported MR2 runs are quicker
Two November 2025 reports show why the 2021 headline should not be repeated as a current, universal record. TCS Motorsports’ video description says Brandon Scott’s Toyota-powered MR2 ran 7.88 seconds at 187 mph at the Haltech World Cup Finals, describing it as the fastest Toyota-powered MR2 in the USA. How to compare MR2 quarter-mile claims
A useful comparison keeps separate measures and categories distinct:
- Engine origin: An MR2 chassis can use Toyota power, a Honda swap or another engine. “Toyota-powered” is narrower than “Toyota MR2.”
- Elapsed time and trap speed: Elapsed time says how long the quarter mile took; trap speed reports the car’s speed at the finish. One does not substitute for the other.
- Date and event: A 2021 result cannot be treated as a current ranking against later passes without checking the event and class context.
- Claim scope: “All-Toyota,” “Toyota-powered in the USA,” and “quickest MR2 regardless of engine” describe different records.
On that basis, the 2021 BoostedBoiz result is a notable reported seven-second quarter mile from a Honda-powered MR2. Toyota UK’s figures belong to Freke’s distinct all-Toyota car, while the 2025 sources describe later, quicker runs with their own category claims. None of those reports alone proves a current global record across every MR2 and race class.
