The U.S.-market 2026 Honda Prelude is a front-wheel-drive hybrid with a direct-drive system—not a conventional automatic or manual car. Its S+ Shift feature uses engine and motor control, plus paddle inputs, to simulate performance-style gear changes. That distinction explains the apparent contradiction: Honda adds shift sensations to a powertrain that does not have a stepped gearbox.
Does the 2026 Honda Prelude have a manual transmission?
No. Honda’s U.S. specifications describe a two-motor hybrid system that is “not equipped with a traditional transmission or CVT.” The Prelude is front-wheel drive, and the traction motor sends power to the wheels through a fixed ratio; engine power can be blended in through a lock-up clutch. Calling it an “automatic hybrid” may be understandable shorthand, but it can suggest a conventional automatic gearbox that this car does not have.
The powertrain combines an Atkinson-cycle 1,993 cc four-cylinder engine, rated at 141 hp at 6,000 rpm and 134 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm, with a traction motor rated at 181 hp and 232 lb-ft. Honda lists 200 hp of total system output. That total is based on peak concurrent output, so the engine and motor horsepower figures should not be added together. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.
How does Honda S+ Shift work?
S+ Shift is a simulated performance-transmission experience, not a physical eight-speed gearbox. Honda says the system coordinates engine rpm and traction-motor operation with paddle inputs to reproduce responses associated with shifting. Its described effects include downshift blips, rev matching, holding a simulated gear, and enhanced engine sound. Honda’s press kit calls it an “8-speed transmission” experience only as a simulation.

When S+ Shift is engaged, the instrument-cluster power meter becomes a tachometer. Honda says perceived upshifts and downshifts are heightened in every drive mode; GT and Sport modes further heighten powertrain response and engine sound, particularly in Sport. Those descriptions establish how Honda says the feature is designed to behave, not how convincing it feels on the road.
What supports the Prelude’s sporty-coupe positioning?
Honda says the Prelude is its first hybrid-electric model to use high-performance chassis hardware derived from the Civic Type R. The named components are dual-axis front suspension, wide front and rear tracks, large brakes, and adaptive dampers. The suspension and brakes are tuned specifically for the Prelude. Honda lists four-piston Brembo front calipers, 13.8-inch front rotors, and 12.0-inch rear rotors.

Honda characterizes the car as a sporty but comfortable grand-touring coupe. The hardware and mode list explain that positioning; they do not, by themselves, establish how the Prelude compares in driving enjoyment or capability with a traditional rear-wheel-drive sports coupe. An independent road test or firsthand drive would be needed to support a verdict on its actual feel.
What are the Prelude’s U.S. price and fuel-economy figures?
American Honda announced a U.S. MSRP of $42,000 before destination, or $43,195 including the $1,195 destination charge. The same 2025 announcement lists EPA ratings of 46 mpg city, 41 highway, and 44 combined for the 2026 model. These are manufacturer-published figures; MSRP is not a dealer transaction price, and the announcement does not establish future pricing.

Honda’s U.S. specification lists one well-equipped trim. Standard equipment includes 19-inch wheels with 235/40R19 all-season tires, adaptive dampers, Brembo four-piston front calipers, and Honda Sensing driver-assistance features. Honda also lists 15.1 cubic feet of cargo volume and a curb weight of 3,261 pounds. High-performance summer tires are available according to Honda’s press materials, but they are not the standard all-season tires.

Based on Honda’s published technical descriptions, the precise summary is: the Prelude is a direct-drive hybrid that simulates some performance-shifting sensations through S+ Shift. It is not a manual, and the simulated eight-speed behavior should not be mistaken for a conventional stepped automatic transmission. Honda’s materials document the system’s intended character and chassis equipment, but do not independently verify the car’s on-road feel.
