The United States gets Audi’s new A5, but not the version many wagon fans want. Europe receives A5 and S5 Avant wagons alongside Sedan models. America gets the five-door liftback that Audi markets as the A5 sedan, plus the related S5, while missing the Avant and several European engines, hybrid features, lighting functions, and interior choices.
The change also marks the end of the A4 sedan name in this part of Audi’s lineup. Under Audi’s revised naming plan, odd-numbered models represent combustion-powered, hybrid, or diesel vehicles, making the new A5 the A4’s successor in the U.S. rather than merely another generation of the old A5.

The A5 is now Audi’s U.S. replacement for the A4 sedan
The name change is part of Audi’s revised naming system. Audi says even-numbered model names will identify battery-electric vehicles, while odd-numbered names will be used for combustion, hybrid, and diesel models. That makes the A5 the combustion-powered counterpart to future electric models that may occupy the A4’s old position in the range.
The new A5 also consolidates two roles. It replaces the A4 sedan in Audi’s U.S. naming structure while carrying forward the practical, hatchback-like shape previously associated with the A5 Sportback. Audi’s first production model on its new Premium Platform Combustion architecture is therefore not just a redesigned A5; it is the company’s new midsize combustion car.

There is one important market distinction: in Europe, the family includes both Sedan and Avant wagon versions. In the United States, Audi calls the five-door liftback-shaped car the A5 sedan and does not offer the Avant.
What the U.S. A5 actually is
Calling the American car a sedan can be misleading if you picture a conventional three-box car with a separate trunk. The U.S. A5 has a large rear hatch and a fastback-style roofline. It is closer in practical layout to the previous A5 Sportback than to the traditional A4 sedan.
That gives the A5 a more useful cargo opening than a conventional sedan, while retaining the low seating position and premium styling expected of a German sport sedan. The car seats five and uses a standard quattro all-wheel-drive system in the current U.S. specification.

U.S. powertrains: one A5 engine and a stronger S5

The current U.S. A5 is not sold with the lower-output gasoline engines available in Europe, and there is no U.S. diesel version listed. Audi’s American model information centers on the 268-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, seven-speed S tronic transmission, and quattro drivetrain.
The U.S. S5 moves to a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 rated at 362 hp. Do not directly substitute the European number when comparing the two cars: Audi’s European technical material lists the S5 at 270 kW, or 367 PS, and 550 Nm, approximately 406 lb-ft. PS and kW figures are not the same as the U.S. horsepower and torque figures quoted for the American model.
The biggest omission: no A5 Avant in America
The European A5 Avant is the version many U.S. buyers would likely consider the most compelling. It combines the A5’s lower, more stylish profile with a long roof, a larger rear opening, and the everyday usefulness of a wagon.

Audi’s European launch material documents both A5 Avant and S5 Avant models. Audi’s U.S. launch briefing, however, indicated that the Avant would not be brought to America. The current U.S. lineup consequently offers the five-door A5 and S5 liftback body styles, not the lower-roof wagon.
This is not a case of the United States missing the entire new A5 family. American buyers do get the A5 and S5. They simply do not get the body style that makes the European range look most different from the old A4/A5 split.
What else the U.S. does not get
1. European lower-output and diesel engines
European A5 technical specifications include a 110-kW gasoline engine rated at 150 PS, higher-output 150-kW gasoline versions, and 150-kW diesel variants, with different drivetrain combinations including quattro. Audi’s U.S. materials list the 268-hp gasoline A5 instead and do not offer those European 150-PS or diesel choices.
That means American buyers get a simpler, more powerful base engine rather than the broader European ladder. It is not necessarily a power disadvantage, but it removes the choice of a lower-cost or diesel-oriented configuration.
2. The European 48-volt MHEV-plus system
European A5 and S5 models use Audi’s 48-volt MHEV-plus system. Audi describes it as supporting partial electric driving, energy recuperation, and lower emissions. In the European S5, the electric motor-generator works with a water-cooled lithium-ion battery.
That hardware was not planned for U.S.-market A5 vehicles according to reporting from Audi’s American launch briefing. The current U.S. specification emphasizes the conventional turbocharged engine, S tronic transmission, and quattro system rather than advertising the European MHEV-plus setup.
In practical terms, the U.S. car should not be described as a European-style mild hybrid, and it should not be marketed as a plug-in hybrid. The available information supports a conventional gasoline A5 for the United States, not the European electrified configuration.

3. Fully animated OLED-lighting behavior
European A5 models can be equipped with digital OLED rear lights and selectable lighting signatures as part of the top technology equipment package. The system can use more elaborate animated patterns and warning effects than a conventional fixed lamp.

U.S.-market cars can still have OLED or LED lighting hardware and selectable signatures where equipped, but reporting on the U.S. S5 indicates that the animated warning and shimmering effects used in other markets are not fully activated in America. U.S. buyers may receive static or more limited signature choices instead of the full European behavior.
The legal explanation needs some precision. U.S. lighting requirements under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 differ from European lighting rules, and NHTSA’s 2022 rulemaking dealt specifically with adaptive driving-beam headlamps. That does not establish a blanket federal ban on every animated taillight function. The A5-specific explanation should therefore be attributed to Audi and its U.S. market implementation, not reduced to the claim that one regulation categorically prohibits all animated OLED effects.
4. Cloth upholstery
Audi showed cloth upholstery for European A5 models, but the U.S. launch briefing indicated that the cloth interior would not be offered in America. The reported reasoning was market positioning: Audi expects U.S. buyers to favor leather or leather-like upholstery.
This is an equipment and consumer-preference decision, not a technical limitation. The cloth interior exists in the European range; it simply is not part of the U.S. offering.
Do not confuse the missing Avant with the missing coupe
The wagon decision is only one part of Audi’s body-style rationalization. The traditional two-door A5, S5, and RS5 coupe and Cabriolet models were removed from the U.S. lineup for the 2025 model year. Audi confirmed that the four-door Sportback-style models would continue, but the two-door bodies would not return for 2025.
That means the United States misses two different things:

These decisions fit Audi’s broader attempt to reduce overlapping body styles. The new family is organized around four-door Sedan and Avant forms in Europe, while the United States receives only the four-door liftback marketed as a sedan.
What changed for 2026
The original launch story concerned Audi’s 2024 reveal and an expected 2025 U.S. arrival. That is no longer the current status. As of August 12, 2026, Audi’s relevant U.S. production car is the 2026 A5, with a starting MSRP of $50,200 before options and destination charges. Audi said 2026 models were expected to reach U.S. retailers in the first quarter of 2026.

Audi’s 2026 update adds or revises several technology and equipment details:
- Redesigned MMI: the infotainment interface receives a revised layout and user experience.
- Revised steering-wheel controls: Audi brings back a scroll wheel to the multifunction steering wheel.
- Expanded voice controls: the updated system supports more voice-operated functions.
- Available integrated dashcam: the forward-facing camera records 4K video at 30 frames per second and stores it locally on a separately supplied microSD card. It is optional, not standard on every trim.
- New parking and driver-assistance features: equipment varies with trim and option selection.
- Available S Sport suspension: buyers can choose a sportier suspension setup where offered.
- Additional trim content: Audi adds or reshuffles equipment across the 2026 range.
Why Audi made the U.S. A5 this way
The new A5 is best understood as a consolidation strategy rather than a simple model refresh. Audi previously maintained a traditional A4 sedan, an A5 coupe, an A5 Cabriolet, and an A5 Sportback. The new naming plan makes the A5 the odd-numbered combustion successor to the A4 sedan, while the liftback preserves much of the Sportback’s practicality.

At the same time, Audi is reducing the number of closely related body styles. Europe retains the Sedan and Avant, but the U.S. market receives the liftback-shaped sedan and not the wagon. The coupe and convertible have already left the American lineup. The result is a car that is more useful than a conventional sedan but less diverse as a family than the European A5 range.

The equipment differences also show that Audi is not shipping one global specification everywhere. Europe gets a wider engine menu, the MHEV-plus system, cloth upholstery, and more extensive OLED-lighting behavior. The United States gets a stronger single A5 engine, standard all-wheel drive, a simpler powertrain lineup, and a different equipment strategy.
The bottom line for U.S. buyers
The 2026 Audi A5 is the new U.S. answer to the A4 sedan, but it is not a conventional sedan and it is not the full European A5 family. It is a five-seat, five-door liftback with 268 hp, standard quattro, a seven-speed S tronic transmission, and a $50,200 starting price.
What American buyers will not get is just as important: no A5 or S5 Avant, no European diesel or lower-output engines, no MHEV-plus system, no fully enabled European OLED animation, and no cloth interior. The two-door A5, S5, and RS5 coupe and Cabriolet bodies are also gone from the U.S. market.
