In return, you get a compact front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car with a naturally aspirated engine, a six-speed manual, an electrically operated retractable fastback roof, and a chassis that makes ordinary roads feel special.

None of this turns the RF into a different kind of car. It remains a lightweight, naturally aspirated roadster with a strong emphasis on steering, balance, and driver involvement.
Performance: modest numbers, excellent involvement
Every U.S.-market 2024 MX-5 Miata uses Mazda’s Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder. It produces 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine drives the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or, on the Grand Touring trim, an optional six-speed automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
The engine does not deliver the effortless low-rpm shove of a turbocharged sports car. It rewards revs, clean gear changes, and momentum. That means the RF feels easy and relaxed in traffic but becomes much more entertaining when a road starts to curve. You have to participate rather than simply press the accelerator and wait for a large wave of torque.
Instrumented testing illustrates the RF’s capability without making it something it is not. MotorTrend recorded 5.7 seconds from 0 to 60 mph, a 14.5-second quarter mile at 94.1 mph, a 111-foot stop from 60 mph, and 0.90 g on the skidpad in a 2024 RF Club manual. Those are results from one car under particular conditions—not guarantees for every RF. Tires, temperature, surface, fuel load, and driver technique all matter.
The more important takeaway is how much entertainment the RF extracts from moderate speeds. Its compact dimensions, rear-wheel-drive balance, low seating position, manual gearbox, and communicative chassis make a back road engaging without requiring extreme speed. A Subaru BRZ or Toyota GR86 offers more space and a stronger practicality argument; the Miata answers with a more intimate, open-air experience.
RF versus soft top: the roof changes the car’s priorities
The RF—short for retractable fastback—is not merely a soft-top Miata with a metal roof. Press a button and the electrically operated roof opens or closes in approximately 13 seconds. Closed, the RF has a more coupe-like profile and a substantial roof-and-buttress structure. Open, it retains the essential open-air character that defines the MX-5.

The trade-off is weight and packaging. In MotorTrend’s comparison, the tested RF Club weighed 2,454 pounds, versus 2,352 pounds for the tested soft-top Club—a 102-pound difference. The same comparison found the RF slightly slower and heavier, although the numerical gap was small enough to be influenced by tires, weather, and test conditions.

The roof is a convenience feature, not a reason to ignore operating warnings. Use it under the conditions specified in the owner’s manual, and do not assume that aftermarket roof controllers or modifications are endorsed by Mazda. If the car will spend extended periods outdoors, a weather-resistant Miata RF car cover can be worth considering—but verify that the listing fits the ND-generation RF body style and the 2024 model year. A generic convertible cover is not automatically compatible with the RF’s roof and rear buttress design.

For weekend driving, mountain roads, autocross, or occasional track use, the Club is the most coherent version. The available asymmetric limited-slip differential and DSC-Track Mode further support that use case. The Club is also manual-only in the U.S. lineup.
RF Grand Touring: more comfortable, still compromised
The Grand Touring is the better fit if the RF will do regular commuting or longer trips. Depending on configuration, its equipment includes leather seating, heated seats, automatic climate control, navigation, a frameless auto-dimming mirror with HomeLink, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, adaptive front lighting, automatic high-beam control, and traffic-sign recognition.
It is available with either the six-speed manual or the six-speed automatic. The automatic is the only automatic RF configuration in the 2024 U.S. lineup, but it is less aligned with the classic Miata recipe. Buy it because you value convenience—not because it makes the RF more practical. The two-seat cabin and tiny trunk remain.

How practical is the Miata RF as a daily driver?
Practicality is where the RF asks for the largest leap of faith. It has two seats, few useful storage cubbies, and approximately 4.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The trunk is suitable for light luggage and groceries, not bulky hobbies or a family’s weekend equipment. The BRZ and GR86 offer substantially more flexibility because their rear seats can carry people or provide additional cargo space.
Mazda’s owner’s manual lists the U.S. hardtop model on 17-inch wheels at:

- 90.9 inches wheelbase
- 49.0 inches height
The low height helps create the sports-car sensation but can make entry and exit difficult for some drivers. The snug cabin also means that taller occupants should sit in one before buying rather than assuming the specifications will tell the whole story.

The RF can serve as a daily driver for someone who packs lightly, drives alone or with one passenger, and accepts the low seating position. It is a poor match for families, frequent airport runs, large pets, bulky sports equipment, or anyone expecting crossover-like convenience.

All 2024 MX-5 Miata models receive the larger 8.8-inch Mazda Connect display, touch functionality when using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and Alexa integration. Club models add wireless Apple CarPlay, Bose nine-speaker audio, headrest speakers, and SiriusXM with a three-month trial subscription.

Wheel and tire fitment also varies. Listed tire sizes are 195/50R16 and 205/45R17, depending on the wheel configuration. Mazda recommends replacing tires with the same type originally fitted and directs owners to the vehicle’s tire-pressure label for the exact pressure. Before buying 2024 Miata RF tires, confirm the wheel size, load and speed ratings, seasonal use, and the tire type shown on the car.
