The smaller engine describes displacement and cylinder layout—not a smaller G-Class. The G 550 still has a gasoline engine; it is not the all-electric G 580.
What changed in the 2025 G 550?
Mercedes-Benz USA announced that the 2025 G 550 would use a 2,999-cc (3.0-liter) turbocharged gasoline inline-six, replacing the prior U.S. G 550’s biturbo V8 configuration. The new engine combines exhaust-gas turbocharging with an electric auxiliary compressor. The change is to the powertrain, not the size of the G-Class body. Is the G 550 a hybrid?
Yes. It is a 48-volt mild hybrid, using an integrated starter generator (ISG) to provide assistance at lower engine speeds and recover energy. Mercedes-Benz lists 20 hp and 148 lb-ft of additional ISG assistance. Those are assistance figures, not a separately stated combined system output, so they should not be added to the gasoline engine’s ratings to create a total horsepower or torque figure.
This setup is not a plug-in hybrid. The cited specifications describe engine assistance, energy recovery and coasting, not an electric-only driving range. Mercedes-Benz described the engine as “fully electrified with 48-volt mild hybrid technology for increased performance and efficiency.” That is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independently verified efficiency result.

How much power does the 2025 G 550 make?
Mercedes-Benz USA gives the gasoline engine an output of 443 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, with peak torque available from 1,950 to 5,500 rpm. The separate ISG assistance figures are 20 hp and 148 lb-ft at lower engine speeds. Mercedes does not state a combined system rating in the cited specifications.

The figures in the 2025 column are U.S.-market specifications from Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2024 announcement. The available announcement does not provide a like-for-like prior-model output comparison. Mercedes characterizes the new engine as improving performance and efficiency, but the announcement does not include a directly comparable fuel-economy figure or independent test result; no specific efficiency gain can be established from it.

Is the G 550 the electric G-Class?
No. The G 550 has a gasoline engine supported by a mild-hybrid system. The all-electric model is the G 580 Electric SUV, listed separately on Mercedes-Benz USA’s G-Class model-family page. Their powertrains are fundamentally different: the G 550 uses a combustion engine, while the G 580 is electric. Do not treat the G 550’s 48-volt assistance as an electric driving mode or range.

These specifications describe the U.S. model; G-Class trim names and powertrains can differ by market, so confirm the local model and year before applying them elsewhere.
