The 2025 BMW R 18 gained a larger rear wheel, revised comfort details and 120 lb-ft of torque. Those changes make BMW’s big boxer cruiser a more compelling alternative to American bikes—but they do not prove it outperforms them. Against the 2026 Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic, the R 18 matches the published torque figure while Harley lists more horsepower and less weight.
What changed on the 2025 BMW R 18?
BMW announced the updated R 18 family on January 21, 2025. The headline mechanical change was a 4 lb-ft increase in torque, bringing the family’s stated peak to 120 lb-ft. BMW also brought the range into compliance with Euro 5+ emissions standards. The base R 18 received a set of practical and visual revisions:
- An 18-inch rear wheel replaced the former 16-inch wheel.
- New front and rear fenders and a round muffler design refreshed its traditional styling.
- A recontoured seat with softer padding and a retuned rear shock were intended to improve comfort.
- A USB-C charging socket was added.
These are manufacturer-described changes, not a substitute for a ride evaluation. BMW’s release quotes Boxer Series head Markus Lederer describing the revisions as intended to make the bike more comfortable and fun to ride; that is the company’s product aim, not an independent test finding. BMW’s 2025 R 18 announcement has the full update details.
How much torque does the BMW R 18 have?
BMW’s current U.S. technical page lists the base R 18 at 120 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm, with 91 hp at 4,750 rpm. Its 1,802 cc engine is an air/oil-cooled, two-cylinder boxer twin. A six-speed transmission sends power through a Cardan shaft final drive. BMW says the 2025 update raised torque by 4 lb-ft across the R 18 family; the current base-model specifications are on BMW’s R 18 technical-data page.

Torque is useful for describing engine output at a given speed, but a peak figure alone does not tell you how quickly a motorcycle accelerates or how its engine feels across the rev range. Gearing, throttle response, traction, load and test conditions all matter. The 120 lb-ft figure is a noteworthy headline, not a road-test result.
BMW R 18 vs. 2026 Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic
The Heritage Classic is a specific, current U.S.-market comparison point—not a proxy for every American cruiser. These figures come from manufacturers’ pages for different model years and use different stated methods, so they are useful for a specification comparison, not a same-condition performance verdict.

Harley matches BMW’s stated torque amount, but its figure peaks at a different engine speed. Harley lists 7 more horsepower and a lower published weight; those numbers alone cannot establish which motorcycle is quicker, easier to handle, more comfortable, or more satisfying to own. Compare the specifications with their model-year and measurement qualifications intact, and see Harley-Davidson’s 2026 Heritage Classic page for its figures.
What the BMW’s size and layout mean for riders
The R 18’s boxer engine and shaft drive give it a distinctive mechanical identity among large cruisers. BMW lists a 68.1-inch wheelbase and a 28.3-inch unladen seat height. The low seat figure may appeal to riders who want a lower perch, but it does not guarantee an easy fit: seat width, leg position, handlebar reach, balance and the ability to manage a 760.5-pound motorcycle while stopped all affect rider confidence.

Its weight figure is BMW’s unladen, road-ready measurement with the 4.2-gallon usable tank fully fueled. It is not directly interchangeable with Harley’s 719-pound running-order figure because the makers’ published methods and configurations are not established as identical. Before deciding that the BMW is too heavy—or manageable—sit on it and, if possible, maneuver it at low speed and practice a controlled stop during a dealer test ride.

BMW’s listed standard equipment for the 2025 base R 18 includes:
- ABS, Automatic Stability Control, Dynamic Brake Control and Dynamic Engine Brake Control
- Riding modes and Keyless Ride
- Full LED lighting, a USB-C socket and a 12V socket
- A tachometer and adjustable brake and clutch levers
BMW also said its Ultimate Care break-in service, described as the “600 Mile Service,” was included with each new 2025 motorcycle, subject to a maximum of six months or 750 miles, whichever came first. That was a 2025 offer; ask a dealer whether it applies to a particular bike and what the current terms are. BMW’s R 18 model page provides current model information.

The R 18 makes the most sense for a rider drawn to its large boxer engine, shaft final drive and deliberately traditional styling who is willing to assess a heavy motorcycle in person. Its listed equipment and revised seat and shock may matter to someone planning regular rides, while the low seat height could be a useful starting point for evaluating fit.
For a buyer comparing it with an American cruiser, start with the specific motorcycles and intended use rather than nationality or torque headlines. Consider how the seating position works for your height, whether you expect to ride solo or with a passenger, what luggage you need, and how the bike feels at low speed. The figures above do not establish comparative comfort, handling, reliability or owner satisfaction, and the cited comparison does not cover every U.S. cruiser.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Confirm the exact model year and price. BMW’s $15,395 R 18 MSRP was announced for the 2025 model year before destination; it is not a confirmed 2026 price. Ask for the current out-the-door quote, including destination and dealer fees.
- Check your fit and low-speed confidence. Sit on the motorcycle, reach the controls, and assess how securely you can put your feet down. If allowed, test its low-speed balance and stopping behavior rather than relying on seat height alone.
- Match the bike to your riding. Decide whether you need passenger space, luggage, or a more stripped-back solo cruiser, then compare the actual equipment on the bike you would buy.
- Verify service terms. Ask the dealer what break-in service is included for that model year and confirm maintenance requirements and costs.
- Check tire fitment before ordering replacements. BMW specifies a 180/55 B18 rear tire on the base R 18. Verify the exact wheel configuration, tire ratings and manufacturer fitment for your motorcycle before buying.
