The 2025 Audi RS 3 is a persuasive answer to the claim that Audi builds dull performance cars: its turbocharged five-cylinder has a distinct identity, and its rear-axle torque splitter gives the chassis a more adjustable way to manage power through a corner. The case is backed by a publication road test and a Nürburgring lap—but the lap was set in a pre-production car on optional track-focused equipment, not a standard showroom RS 3.
What makes the 2025 RS 3 special?
Start with the engine. The RS 3 pairs a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five with all-wheel drive. That combination gives the car a clear mechanical character beyond simply being a fast compact Audi. Its specifications depend on the market: Audi’s 2025 German-market Sportback sheet lists 294 kW (400 PS) and 500 Nm, while Car and Driver’s review of the 2025 US-market sedan lists 394 hp and 369 lb-ft. Those are market-specific figures, not interchangeable ratings.
Audi’s product-upgrade RS 3 went on sale from the end of 2024, according to the company’s 2025 release. The German Sportback sheet specifies a seven-speed S tronic transmission and a 0–100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds. That figure applies to the listed German-market Sportback; it should not be substituted for a US test result.
How does the RS 3 torque splitter work?
The torque splitter varies torque between the two rear wheels. It works with electronic stabilization control and wheel-selective brake torque vectoring, which can use braking at individual wheels to help influence the car’s path. Optional adaptive dampers are another part of the chassis-control mix.

Audi says a revised control algorithm coordinates these systems more precisely, helping the car turn in earlier and reducing understeer. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of the update, rather than an independently measured guarantee of how every driver will experience it. In Audi’s October 28, 2024 technical release, RS 3 Technical Project Manager Marvin Schwätter called the torque splitter “a game changer” for lateral dynamics.
Is the 2025 RS 3 fast?
In Car and Driver’s test of the US-market 2025 sedan, the RS 3 reached 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 11.7 seconds at 118 mph. These are that publication’s test results, not Audi’s advertised figures. Its EPA fuel-economy ratings are 20 mpg city, 30 highway, and 23 combined; separately, Car and Driver recorded 34 mpg during its 75-mph highway test. The rating and the test result describe different conditions.

What does the Nürburgring lap prove—and what doesn’t it?
On June 21, 2024, Audi Sport race and development driver Frank Stippler lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:33.123 in a pre-production RS 3 product-upgrade car, as reported by the circuit. The setup included Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tires, a 19-inch ceramic brake system, and RS sports suspension with adaptive damper control.
That is a meaningful demonstration of the upgraded car’s track capability in that configuration. It is not a lap time for an ordinary production car on standard tires, nor evidence that the car will feel the same on public roads. Stippler credited the fine-tuning, including brake torque vectoring, with making the car more willing to turn in and easier to position for corner exit.

Can you daily-drive an RS 3?
Car and Driver describes the US sedan as composed and comfortable when driven sedately, so its performance hardware does not make it exclusively a track car. The same review notes tight rear seating, an important practical drawback if adults regularly ride in back. Upgraded brakes, stiffer suspension, performance tires, and RS Torque Rear mode underline that the car’s everyday manners coexist with track-oriented equipment; they do not erase the compromises.
Audi names the Pirelli P Zero R as the standard tire, describing it as a balance of everyday comfort and sporty character. The road-approved Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R is an optional factory tire designed for track use. Tire availability and exact fitment can vary, so confirm the specification for the particular car rather than assuming a retail tire listing fits.

Why the “isn’t boring” case holds up
“Boring” is a judgment, not a lap-time category. The stronger, supportable argument is that the 2025 RS 3 combines an unusual five-cylinder engine with a torque-splitting rear axle, revised chassis coordination, quick tested acceleration, and credible track credentials, while a road test also reports composed sedate driving. That makes it a specific example of Audi building an engaging compact performance car—not proof that every Audi, or every RS 3 setup, will suit every driver.
