The 1970 Buick GS 455 paired a large-displacement V8 with the Gran Sport’s more restrained Buick identity. General Motors’ Heritage Collection lists the 455 at 350 hp and 510 lb-ft in its specification for the closely related GSX. The Stage 1 version was a separate factory option with a higher advertised horsepower rating, while the GSX added distinctive appearance and equipment. Those distinctions matter: the GSX was not another name for every GS 455.
What was the 1970 Buick GS 455?
The GS 455 was Buick’s Gran Sport built around a 455-cubic-inch overhead-valve V8. It offered the kind of big-engine performance associated with the 1970 muscle-car era, but within Buick’s comparatively restrained, luxury-oriented image. Buick Heritage Alliance describes the period as “the peak of the muscle car era”; that is the article’s historical characterization, not a measured ranking.
The most useful way to understand the model is to separate the GS 455 itself from two related terms: Stage 1 and GSX. Stage 1 was a performance option for the GS 455. The GSX was a more visibly assertive derivative based on the GS 455, with its own styling and equipment.
How much horsepower did a 1970 Buick GS 455 have?
General Motors’ Heritage Collection gives the GSX’s 455-cubic-inch V8 a rating of 350 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Buick Heritage Alliance reports 360 hp and 510 lb-ft for the GS 455 Stage 1. These are differently specified versions, so the figures should not be collapsed into a single rating for every GS 455.

The period order form lists Stage 1 Performance Option as an option on the GS 455, supporting the distinction between the base model and an option-equipped car. It does not establish that every GSX was a Stage 1. The Buick Motor Division wholesale order document is the period evidence for that option relationship.
What was the difference between a GS 455 and a GSX?
The GS 455 names the Gran Sport model and its 455 engine; GSX identifies a related derivative with distinctive styling and additional equipment. General Motors lists the GSX’s special suspension, 3.64 rear end, front and rear spoilers, and graphics. Buick Heritage Alliance describes the GSX as a more youthful, visibly assertive take on the GS 455 and notes its Saturn Yellow and Apollo White color choices.

In its GSX specification, GM lists a two-door hardtop, 112-inch wheelbase, 3,562-lb weight, and $4,880 base price. Those are GSX-specific reference figures, not universal specifications for every GS 455 body style or equipment combination; the price is the historical nominal base price, not a current-dollar equivalent. See GM’s 1970 GSX specifications.
A period brochure transcription lists a four-speed manual and a three-speed automatic among the transmission choices. That indicates availability, not that all cars had either transmission. Team Buick’s 1970 model reference reproduces the brochure information.

What did the Stage 1 option add?
Stage 1 was a factory performance option associated with the GS 455, rather than a synonym for the GSX. Buick Heritage Alliance gives the Stage 1 engine a 360-hp rating and 510 lb-ft of torque. The evidence establishes the option’s relationship to the GS 455 and its advertised rating; it does not justify assuming that every GSX carried Stage 1 equipment.
How many 1970 Buick GSX cars were made?
General Motors’ Heritage Collection reports 678 1970 GSX models built, including 178 Apollo White cars. The 678 count is for the GSX derivative only; it is not a production total for all GS 455s. GM’s Apollo White figure also differs from a secondary registry result that reports 187, so 178 should be understood as the manufacturer heritage figure rather than an undisputed count. An authoritative total for all 1970 GS 455s is not established by these sources. GM Heritage Collection production figures.

Why does the GS 455 still stand out?
The GS 455’s appeal lies in the contrast between a discreet Buick identity and substantial V8 torque. The GSX made that performance more conspicuous through its colors, graphics, spoilers, and equipment, but the broader GS 455 story is not limited to the low-production GSX. Keeping the standard 455, Stage 1 option, and GSX derivative distinct gives a more accurate picture of what Buick offered in 1970.
Claims that the car was the era’s fastest muscle car, or specific quarter-mile times, require period test evidence not established by the cited sources here. The quoted power, torque, equipment, and production figures are the firmer basis for describing the car.
