Yes—but it was a concept, not a production Chiron. Bugatti unveiled the EB 18/3 Chiron in 1999 as a two-seat, mid-engine study with a naturally aspirated 6.3-liter W18. The production Chiron came much later, while the earlier Veyron project moved to a W16.
What was the EB 18/3 Chiron?
Bugatti presented the EB 18/3 Chiron at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 1999. It was a two-seat super-sports-car study, not a car offered for sale. Bugatti describes its W18 as mounted in a mid-engine layout; Italdesign calls the car a two-seat coupé with a mid-rear engine. The concept marked a shift from the front-engine arrangement explored in earlier studies toward a more cab-forward sports-car shape. (Bugatti Newsroom; Italdesign project record)
The name honored Louis Chiron, the Bugatti racing driver. Fabrizio Giugiaro designed the car under the guidance of his father, Giorgetto Giugiaro, according to Bugatti.
What engine and output did the concept have?
The EB 18/3 was specified with a naturally aspirated 6.3-liter W18. Bugatti reports its output as 555 PS; Italdesign gives 555 hp. Those are the figures and units each source publishes, so they should not be treated as a single independently verified production specification. Bugatti’s 2025 account gives 6.3 liters and 555 PS, while Italdesign lists 6,300 cc and 555 hp without a publication year stated on its project page. (Bugatti Newsroom; Italdesign project record)

The official material cited here does not establish a verified acceleration time, top speed, or production quantity for the concept. Performance numbers sometimes repeated elsewhere should not be presented as confirmed specifications without stronger sourcing.
How was it different from the production Chiron and Veyron?
The shared Chiron name can make the concept easy to confuse with the later production car. The EB 18/3 was a 1999 design study; the production Chiron was a separate car, not an 18-cylinder version of the concept. The useful distinction is status and engine configuration:

| Car | Role and timing | Engine configuration |
|---|---|---|
| EB 18/3 Chiron | Two-seat concept shown in 1999 | 6.3-liter W18; Bugatti reports 555 PS and Italdesign reports 555 hp |
| Production Veyron | Production car that followed the concept-development period | W16 |
| Production Chiron | Later production model, distinct from the 1999 study | Not an 18-cylinder car |
Bugatti presents the early concepts as part of the development path toward the Veyron, not as proof that the W18 carried over unchanged. Ferdinand K. Piëch’s initial vision centered on an 18-cylinder engine, and successive concepts explored how it might fit different vehicle types. As the Veyron project developed, engineers chose a W16 instead. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did Bugatti’s W18 idea give way to a W16?
The W18 belongs to the exploratory concept phase. Bugatti’s retrospective account describes the concepts as steps in working toward the Veyron, while the production car adopted a W16. The evidence supports a change in engineering direction as the project took shape; it does not support describing the Veyron or production Chiron as W18-powered.
