Reporting identifies the car as an unusually powerful example built for Earl Newman, based on a sixth-generation Camaro platform and styled as a tribute to his 1970 Chevelle LS6 pilot car.
Who built the 70/SS, and what was delivered?
Trans Am Worldwide builds the 70/SS as a modern Chevelle tribute. The car is not a revived or newly launched Chevrolet production model. Reports describe its Camaro donor platform and replacement carbon-fiber bodywork, while the builder calls the model “based on the 1970 Chevelle Super Sport.” Trans Am Worldwide’s 70/SS page presents the builder’s own model information; American Cars And Racing’s delivery report and Carscoops’ coverage identify Newman’s delivered car.
The headline’s “Chevy Chevelle” is shorthand for the car’s styling and heritage. Chevrolet did not build or deliver this 70/SS as a new factory Chevelle.
What is special about Earl Newman’s 1,500-hp car?
American Cars And Racing reports that Newman’s delivered build uses an LS-based V8 bored to 454 cubic inches, a Magnuson 2650 supercharger and a Strange 9-inch GForce differential. That outlet reports 1,500 hp; Carscoops describes the figure as measured at the flywheel. Neither report supplies an independent dyno result, so 1,500 hp should be treated as a reported claim, not a verified test figure.

There is an important difference between those delivery reports and the builder’s general LS6/X model description. Trans Am Worldwide’s current page describes the LS6/X as a twin-turbo 454 with “1,500 streetable rear wheel horsepower.” The two configurations and measurement bases should not be blended: the reported Magnuson-supercharged setup is the one attributed to Newman’s delivered car, while the twin-turbo and rear-wheel figures describe the builder’s broader offering.
How does it compare with the original 1970 Chevelle LS6?
Newman’s original car is described as a 1970 Chevelle LS6 pilot car—a vehicle built to test the assembly line before production. American Cars And Racing says its 454-cubic-inch V8 was officially rated at 450 hp and 500 lb-ft. Those period ratings belong to the original car; they are not directly comparable to a modern reported horsepower figure without accounting for differences in rating and measurement methods. GM’s Heritage Archive provides background material on the 1970 Chevelle.

How many LS6/X cars will be made?
The published production-limit figures do not agree. Trans Am Worldwide’s current page says the LS6/X is limited to 25 units and marks it sold out. Carscoops reported a limit of 20 examples in November 2025. The sources do not explain the discrepancy, so the builder’s current page is best read as its present published claim—not independent confirmation of the total.
What does a 70/SS cost?
Trans Am Worldwide currently lists a $146,240 starting price for the base model, plus the donor car, whose cost varies. Carscoops reported a base price of around $195,000 in November 2025. The sources do not establish whether the figures cover the same configuration or inclusions, so they should not be treated as one current transaction price. American Cars And Racing does not disclose what Newman paid for his build.

Is Newman’s car the same as the earlier 800-hp 70/SS?
No. Chevy Hardcore reported a separate 70/SS delivered to Brad Pfitzner in February 2025. That car had an 800-hp supercharged package and a Magnuson 2650. It is a different owner’s build, not Newman’s 1,500-hp example.
