There is no objective way to rank a car’s weirdness, but these ten vehicles stand out for unmistakable choices in design, engineering or purpose. This selection, based on RAC Drive’s October 19, 2018 feature, ranges from tiny everyday transport to a six-wheel Formula 1 racer, a never-produced concept and a life-size LEGO replica. Here is what made each one memorable—and what the historical record says about it.
1. BMW Isetta: enter through the front
The Isetta’s defining oddity is also its doorway: the entire front of the bubble-shaped car, dashboard included, swung open for entry. RAC Drive describes a single bench seat and no side doors. The design began with Italian maker Iso; BMW later took over the rights, increased output to 13 hp and sold more than 160,000 before discontinuing the model in 1962, according to RAC Drive’s 2018 account.

The Isetta’s British story also involved its wheel count. The National Motor Museum Trust says Isettas sold in Britain were three-wheelers; under the historical arrangement it describes, they could be driven on a motorcycle licence and had a lower road-tax rate. Those details describe the period and Britain, not current licensing advice or rules elsewhere.

The 2018 Ferrari Monza SP1 turns a road car into a one-person speedster: it has no roof or conventional windscreen. RAC Drive reports nearly 800 hp and a 0–100 km/h time of 2.9 seconds. It also describes a fairing that redirects airflow as a “virtual windscreen.” Those performance figures are RAC’s reported specifications in its 2018 feature, rather than independently verified figures here.

3. Ford Speedster: a V-8 and a starter button
RAC Drive dates this 1932 Speedster to an idea by Edsel Ford, developed with designer Eugene Gregoire. Its flathead V-8 gave the stripped-back car substantial presence, while a starter button replaced the more familiar hand-cranking image many people associate with early motoring. RAC reports that one example sold for more than £650,000 in 2016; that is a historical sale, not a current valuation.
4. Tyrrell P34: six wheels in Formula 1
The Tyrrell P34 put four small wheels at the front and two at the rear, making it one of the most unconventional Formula 1 cars ever raced. RAC Drive reports that Jody Scheckter drove it to victory at the Swedish Grand Prix. The success did not last: front-tire wear became a problem, and a governing-body rule requiring competing cars to have four wheels helped close the door on the layout.
5. Cadillac Cyclone: a concept with radar in its nose
Cadillac’s 1959 Cyclone was a concept, not a production car. Its Plexiglass bubble canopy and passenger intercom made the cabin feel closer to a futuristic cockpit than an ordinary automobile. Black cones at the front housed radar for a warning-based crash-avoidance system, according to RAC Drive. The unusual combination made the Cyclone a technology showcase as much as a styling exercise.
6. Peel P50: a one-seat car you could move by hand
The Peel P50 is remarkable for making “car” feel like an ambitious word for a very small machine. The National Motor Museum Trust’s 1964 example is a British, single-seat three-wheeler with a 49cc, one-cylinder engine rated at 4.2 hp. The museum gives its weight as 130 lb (59 kg) and performance as 40 mph. It had no reverse gear; a handle at the rear let the owner lift and reposition the light car.

Peel Engineering describes the intended load as one adult and a shopping bag. Its listed features include a single left-side door, one wiper and one headlight. The period pitch, preserved by the National Motor Museum, was: “Almost cheaper than walking! … Car comfort, Moped costs”.
Published production totals differ. Peel Engineering says 50 P50s were produced, while the Louwman Museum describes its displayed example as the first of 47 units. The sources therefore do not support presenting one precise total as undisputed. Nor do their specifications describe a single universal car: the Louwman Museum’s featured P50 is listed as 132 × 99 × 120 cm, 59 kg, with a 49cc DKW engine and a 61 km/h top speed; Peel Engineering gives 54 inches (1,372 mm) long and 39 inches (991 mm) wide.
Peel Engineering also describes later hand-built petrol and electric replicas. That does not establish their present stock, legal classification or availability in any particular market.

7. LEGO Bugatti Chiron: a full-size car made of Technic pieces
This entry is a life-size LEGO construction, not a production car or a consumer kit. RAC Drive says the replica was unveiled at the 2018 Italian Grand Prix and used more than one million LEGO Technic pieces and 2,304 Power Function motors. It weighed 500 kg and was said to reach more than 12 mph. The achievement is less about conventional car design than the sheer feat of building a moving, full-scale showpiece from construction elements.

8. Reliant Robin: Britain’s familiar three-wheeler
The Reliant Robin’s single front wheel made it visually distinctive, but it also became a familiar sight in Britain. RAC Drive links its public image to the BBC show Only Fools and Horses. The same 2018 feature reports a top speed of 85 mph and sales of more than 63,000. Its reference to motorcycle licensing concerns UK roads and should not be read as guidance on present-day rules or other jurisdictions.
9. Toyota Sera: gullwing doors on a modest coupe
The Toyota Sera gave an otherwise modest hatchback coupe a dramatic entrance: its doors opened upward in a gullwing style. RAC Drive says Toyota launched it in March 1990, made 16,000 and ended production in December 1995. It was never sold commercially in the UK, according to the feature.
10. Stout Scarab: an early minivan idea with a card table
The Stout Scarab anticipated some of the people-moving priorities associated with later minivans. RAC Drive describes a rear-wheel-drive car with a Ford V-8, six seats, a card table and a wicker headliner—an interior conceived as a space to occupy, not merely a row of seats facing forward. The feature says only nine were produced, with the prohibitive price limiting its reach.

Their oddness comes from different places. The Isetta and P50 challenge the expected shape and scale of a car; the P34 changed the number of wheels; the Cyclone explored concept technology; and the Scarab rethought how passengers might use an interior. The LEGO Chiron is unusual because it is a one-off construction rather than a series-production automobile. Together, these examples show why “weirdest” is a matter of editorial judgment, not a measurable engineering category.
