A meaningful top ten needs a qualification, though: BMW does not publish a complete all-time ranking, and the highest figures include hybrid system output as well as combustion-engine ratings.
This is an editorial ranking of ten production BMW M model variants, ordered by their published peak output. It includes full M models, not M Performance models; counts special editions and named performance versions separately, but not body styles with the same output; and uses BMW’s stated kW and metric-horsepower figures where available. Hybrid system output and engine output are identified separately, not treated as identical measurements. Figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
What is the most powerful BMW M car ever made?
By BMW M’s published figure, it is the plug-in-hybrid BMW XM Label Red, rated at 550 kW (748 hp) combined system output. The final row illustrates the limit of the available official figures: the named examples support nine distinct model variants, not ten. Rather than invent a lower-ranked car or quietly count a body style twice, this ranking stops at the substantiated set. The XM and Label Red are both shown because BMW’s sources make separate claims about the XM range and Label Red; their shared 550 kW figure does not make them two different power records.
How to read the output figures
Hybrid system output is not engine output
The XM Label Red’s 550 kW (748 hp) and the G90 M5’s 535 kW/727 hp are combined system ratings for hybrid powertrains. They are not directly comparable to a combustion engine’s standalone output as if the numbers described the same component. The table ranks the published peak figures, but labels the type of rating so the distinction remains clear.

Generation and version change the answer
“M5” or “M8” alone is not enough to identify a power figure. The F90 M5, M5 Competition and M5 CS have different specifications, as do the M8 Coupé and M8 Competition Coupé. The later G90 M5 is a hybrid with a system-output rating, so its figure belongs to a different generation and measurement context.
Market horsepower labels can differ
BMW USA’s current lineup page lists the XM Label at 738 hp and the M5 Sedan at 717 hp, and identifies its horsepower and acceleration values as preliminary comparison figures. Those US-market values are not interchangeable with the 748 hp and 727 hp figures above; keep them in their own market context. BMW USA: M models lineup.

Why the M5 CS’s “most powerful” claim is historical
When the M5 CS arrived in 2021, BMW M called it “the most powerful BMW M production model there has ever been.” Its 467 kW (635 hp) output made that a launch-era statement. It is not a timeless record: BMW’s later hybrid models publish higher combined system-output figures, and BMW M now describes the XM Label Red as its most powerful model. BMW also said the CS reduced weight by 70 kg compared with the M5 Competition.

What the ranking does—and does not—establish
- By the cited BMW figures, the XM Label Red leads at 550 kW (748 hp) combined system output.
- The G90 M5 is next among the listed entries at 535 kW/727 hp combined system output.
- Combustion-engine ratings, hybrid system ratings and market-specific horsepower labels should not be collapsed into one undifferentiated measure.
- BMW’s official pages cited here do not provide a complete, all-time top-ten ranking. The manufacturer specifications substantiate nine distinct variants under the stated rules; they do not justify filling a tenth position by guesswork.
