Short answer: The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is generally the most expensive modern car, with its bespoke commission estimated at roughly $30–32 million. The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail follows at an estimated $28 million. Those figures are not official Rolls-Royce list prices, however. The highest documented public automobile sale is a separate record: a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé sold for €135 million at auction.
To make the ranking meaningful, the list below separates private-commission estimates, manufacturer-announced prices, and completed auction results.

How this ranking works
There is no single official list of the world’s most expensive cars because the phrase can describe several different things: a manufacturer’s new-car price, an estimated price for a private commission, a current collector valuation, or the final price paid at auction. This list focuses on modern one-off cars, coachbuilt commissions, limited-production hypercars, and exceptionally scarce luxury vehicles.

The first two prices are estimates because Rolls-Royce does not publicly confirm the prices of many coachbuilt commissions. Bugatti’s published prices are generally net, before tax, or plus VAT. The Chiron Profilée figure is a completed auction result, not its original retail price. Dollar conversions are rounded reference figures, not exact historical exchange-rate calculations.

1. Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail — estimated at $30–32 million
The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is the highest-priced modern car in this ranking, although its price is an estimate rather than a confirmed Rolls-Royce list price. Automotive reporting has commonly placed the commission at about $30 million, with some more recent reports putting it closer to $32 million.
Rolls-Royce says the car was inspired by the Black Baccara rose and commissioned by a family with a long-standing relationship with the marque. The rose theme appears in the body and cabin details, including an elaborate hand-finished interior treatment. It is not a standard model that a customer can order from a normal price list: it is a client-specific coachbuilt commission developed around an individual brief.
The Droptail program is extremely limited, and every car is intended to have its own identity. That helps explain why a conventional comparison with a mass-produced luxury sedan or even a limited-run hypercar is misleading. The estimated price reflects the bespoke design process, unique bodywork, extensive hand-finishing, and the labor involved in turning one customer’s concept into a road-going Rolls-Royce.

Price status: estimated. Rolls-Royce has confirmed the car’s bespoke identity and commission, but not the $30–32 million figure.
2. Rolls-Royce Boat Tail — estimated at $28 million
The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is a three-car bespoke grand-tourer program with an approximately $28 million price attached to it by widely repeated automotive reports. Rolls-Royce has not publicly confirmed that figure, and the three cars should not automatically be treated as identical in price. Individual specifications and client requests can change the final cost of a coachbuilt commission.
Its defining feature is the boat-tail rear treatment, which gives the car a long, tapered profile unlike any regular-production Rolls-Royce. The design is accompanied by highly individualized equipment and materials created for the commissioning clients. This is closer to a rolling piece of commissioned design than to a conventional series-production automobile.
Boat Tail is sometimes described as the world’s most expensive new car. That description was widely used before the later La Rose Noire Droptail estimates appeared. A more accurate description today is that the Boat Tail is one of the most expensive modern road-going cars, with a price that remains estimated rather than officially documented.

3. Bugatti La Voiture Noire — €11 million before tax
Bugatti officially announced a price of €11 million before tax for the one-off La Voiture Noire and said the car had been sold to a collector. Commonly reported dollar figures near $18–19 million are approximate and should not be read as a precise historical currency conversion or an official U.S. price.
La Voiture Noire is a grand-touring coupe inspired by the legendary Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic. Its design uses a one-piece carbon-fiber body and a highly individual interpretation of the Atlantic’s long, dramatic proportions. Bugatti equipped it with an 8.0-liter W16 producing 1,500 PS.
The car’s rarity is absolute: there is only one. Its price therefore reflects more than engine output. The buyer acquired a unique body, a hand-built Bugatti, a direct connection to one of the marque’s most important historic designs, and an object that cannot be replicated through a normal factory order.

4. Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta — reported near $17.5 million
The Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta is commonly reported at approximately $17.5 million, but Pagani has not published a confirmed transaction price for the model in the material reviewed for this ranking. The figure should therefore be treated as a reported estimate, not as an official MSRP.
Pagani created the HP Barchetta as an exceptionally limited interpretation of the Zonda through its Uno-di-Uno and Grandi Complicazioni philosophy. Only three examples were produced. The car combines a Mercedes-AMG V12 with carbon-titanium construction, handcrafted finishes, and the kind of individualized detailing associated with Pagani’s most elaborate commissions.
Three cars is enough to make the model technically limited production, but its character is closer to a series of bespoke objects than to a normal high-volume model. That distinction matters when comparing its reported value with the published price of a 40-car Bugatti Divo or a ten-car Centodieci.
Price status: widely reported estimate of approximately $17.5 million. Pagani’s limited production and bespoke character are documented; the exact price is not publicly confirmed here.
5. Rolls-Royce Sweptail — estimated at £10 million
The Rolls-Royce Sweptail is a one-off coachbuilt commission commonly reported at around £10 million, or approximately $13 million in widely used dollar figures. Rolls-Royce did not disclose the purchase price in its 2017 announcement, so this is an estimate rather than a factory-confirmed price.
The car was developed from a single customer’s brief and publicly presented at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Its name describes the defining design idea: a tapered rear inspired by classic boat-tail automobiles and luxury yachts. The long body, minimalist cabin, and carefully tailored details give it a presence that no standard Rolls-Royce model could provide.
Sweptail is important beyond its price. It helped establish the modern Rolls-Royce coachbuilding strategy that later produced the Boat Tail and Droptail families. In that sense, its value comes partly from being a singular commission and partly from representing a turning point in Rolls-Royce’s return to highly customized coachbuilt cars.
Price status: estimated at about £10 million. The dollar figure is an approximate reporting conversion.
6. Bugatti Chiron Profilée — approximately $10.8 million at auction
The one-off Bugatti Chiron Profilée sold at RM Sotheby’s Paris auction in January 2023 for approximately €9.8 million including the buyer’s premium. The result is commonly reported as about $10.8 million. Unlike the estimates attached to the Rolls-Royce commissions, this figure represents a completed public transaction.
The Profilée was created after demand for the Chiron Pur Sport exceeded its planned allocation. Bugatti developed a separate one-off derivative with its own design and specification rather than simply selling another regular Chiron. Its existence made it particularly attractive to collectors: it combined modern Bugatti engineering with the rarity of a single, factory-built example.
It is important to call the result an auction price, not a $10.8 million retail price. The final amount included buyer’s premium and was shaped by competition between bidders. Auction buyers are purchasing a specific object with a known history and exceptional scarcity, so the sale cannot be compared directly with a manufacturer’s net price for a limited series.

Price status: approximately €9.8 million including buyer’s premium at a completed auction; not an original list price.
7. Bugatti Centodieci — €8 million plus VAT
The Bugatti Centodieci is one of the strongest entries in this ranking because Bugatti publicly announced both its limited production and its price: €8 million per car plus VAT. Depending on the exchange rate and tax treatment, that is often summarized as approximately $9 million, but the original figure should remain attached to its tax basis.
Only ten Centodieci cars were planned, and Bugatti later confirmed that the allocation was sold out. The model is a modern interpretation of the EB110, the 1990s-era supercar associated with Bugatti’s revival before the Volkswagen Group era. It uses an 8.0-liter W16 producing 1,600 PS and has a substantially different visual treatment from the Chiron.

8. Mercedes-Maybach Exelero — commonly reported at approximately $8 million
The Mercedes-Maybach Exelero is a one-off high-performance luxury coupe built in 2005 for Fulda tire testing and later associated with the Maybach brand. Its long, low body and sharply pointed front end make it one of the most recognizable modern Maybach creations.

The often-repeated $8 million figure is not supported by a current Mercedes-Benz manufacturer price document located for this article. It is better described as a commonly cited valuation or reported price than as an official list price.
That makes the Exelero’s position less precise than the Bugatti entries with manufacturer-published prices. It remains relevant because it is a unique prototype-like object with major design significance, not a normal Maybach model sold through a dealer network. Its value is tied to rarity, provenance, and historical importance as much as to its performance.
Price status: commonly reported at approximately $8 million; official retail pricing was not established for this ranking.
9. Bugatti Divo — €5 million net
Bugatti announced a net price of €5 million for the Divo and limited production to 40 cars. Approximate dollar figures of $5.5–6 million depend on the exchange rate used and should not replace the original manufacturer figure.

The Divo illustrates the difference between a factory price and a collector-market value. Its €5 million net price was the manufacturer’s starting point for a limited series. A later resale could be higher or lower depending on mileage, provenance, condition, location, taxes, and market demand. The two numbers should not be treated as interchangeable.
Price status: €5 million net, manufacturer-announced for the 40-car series.
10. Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita — reported at approximately $4.8 million
The Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita is commonly associated with a price of approximately $4.8 million. That figure relates to a reported transaction or market reference for a U.S.-specification example rather than a current manufacturer price sheet, so it should not be presented as an official MSRP.
The Trevita’s most distinctive feature is Koenigsegg’s proprietary diamond-weave carbon-fiber finish. Instead of the usual dark appearance of exposed carbon fiber, the treatment creates a shimmering effect that makes the bodywork itself part of the car’s identity. The model was produced in an extremely limited quantity, commonly reported as two examples.
Its price is therefore a combination of unusual materials technology, near-unobtainable scarcity, and collector demand. As with the Exelero, the exact ranking is less certain than for cars with published factory prices, but the CCXR Trevita clearly belongs among the most expensive modern hypercars.
Price status: reported at approximately $4.8 million, based on a reported sale or market reference rather than a current official list price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Record holder: the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé is the crucial exception to any article claiming to list the world’s most expensive cars. One of only two 1955 prototypes was sold at auction on May 5, 2022, for €135 million. Guinness World Records records the result as $142,769,250 including the buyer’s premium.
That is the highest documented public sale price for an automobile, and it exceeds every modern-car estimate in the ranking above. However, the Uhlenhaut Coupé should not be inserted into the top ten without qualification. It is a historic prototype sold as a collector car, not a modern production vehicle or a newly commissioned road car.
The sale also shows why auction records and new-car prices answer different questions. The buyer was not simply purchasing transportation or a specification from a price list. The value came from the car’s engineering history, its connection to Mercedes-Benz racing, its exceptional originality, its provenance, and the fact that only two were made.
Why do these cars cost so much?
1. Scarcity is engineered into the product
A regular production car can be replaced by another example built to the same specification. A one-off cannot. Even a ten-car or 40-car series creates a level of scarcity that changes the buying decision from choosing a product to acquiring a specific collectible.
That is why the one-off La Voiture Noire, Sweptail, Chiron Profilée, and Exelero can command extraordinary figures. There is no second production run waiting for buyers who missed the first one.
2. Bespoke construction requires a different manufacturing process
Coachbuilt cars are developed around an individual client brief. Designers, engineers, trim specialists, and craftspeople may spend years refining a body and cabin that will never be used on another model. The development cost is spread over one or a handful of cars instead of thousands.

- GIFT FOR BOYS & GIRLS – Makes a fun birthday gift or anytime present for kids who love car toys, racing games and collectible vehicles
In the Rolls-Royce Droptail family, the individualized design and hand-finished materials are central to the product. The buyer is paying for the design process and execution as well as the underlying automobile.
3. Performance is only one part of the value
Several cars here have extraordinary engines: the Bugatti La Voiture Noire uses a 1,500-PS W16, the Centodieci produces 1,600 PS, and the Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta uses a Mercedes-AMG V12. But horsepower alone does not explain the order.
The Rolls-Royce commissions are among the most expensive despite being luxury grand tourers rather than track-focused hypercars. Their prices are driven primarily by design, materials, craftsmanship, and exclusivity. Conversely, a technically advanced hypercar can be less expensive if it is produced in a larger limited series.

4. Historical connections make a modern car more important
La Voiture Noire draws on the Type 57 SC Atlantic. The Centodieci references the EB110. These connections give a modern car a narrative and design significance that an ordinary special edition may lack. Collectors often value the story behind a car as much as its specification sheet.
5. Auction prices measure competition, not factory pricing
A manufacturer’s published price is the amount at which a car was offered, usually with a stated tax basis. An auction result is the amount one winning bidder paid after competing against other bidders, often including a buyer’s premium. The result can be much higher than the original price, particularly when the car is unique or historically important.
The Chiron Profilée and 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé are the clearest examples. Their recorded auction prices are real public transactions, but they should not be described as normal retail prices for comparable cars.
What is the most expensive car in the world?
The answer depends on the definition:
- Highest modern bespoke-car estimate: the Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail, estimated at roughly $30–32 million, although Rolls-Royce has not confirmed the price.
- Highest manufacturer-announced price in this modern ranking: Bugatti La Voiture Noire at €11 million before tax.
- Highest documented public automobile sale: the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé at €135 million, including the historic auction transaction’s published record context.
Those are three different records. Treating them as one ranking would mix estimates, factory prices, and auction results and create a misleading answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most expensive modern car?
The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is generally considered the most expensive modern car, with automotive reports estimating its bespoke commission at roughly $30–32 million. Rolls-Royce has not publicly confirmed the price, so it is not an official MSRP.
What is the most expensive car ever sold at auction?
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé holds the record for the highest documented public automobile sale. One of two 1955 prototypes sold for €135 million at auction on May 5, 2022. It is a historic collector car, not a modern production vehicle.
Are the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail and Droptail prices official?
No. The Boat Tail price of about $28 million is widely reported but not officially confirmed by Rolls-Royce. The La Rose Noire Droptail is also based on an estimate, not a published Rolls-Royce price list.
Why are some prices in the ranking estimates while others are official?
A manufacturer price is the amount requested when a car is sold new and is usually stated before tax, net, or plus VAT. An auction result is the final amount paid by a winning bidder and may include a buyer’s premium. An estimate is a reported figure that has not been publicly confirmed by the manufacturer or a documented transaction.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is the costliest modern car by commonly reported commission estimates, followed by the Boat Tail. But the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé remains the highest-priced automobile ever sold publicly, at €135 million, because it is a historic prototype and auction record rather than a modern production car.
