The least expensive new vehicle in this 2026 U.S. ranking is the Hyundai Venue SE, at $21,695 including destination. The list also includes several inexpensive sedans, a hybrid Toyota Corolla, and crossovers with available all-wheel drive.

The ranking below uses destination-inclusive starting prices reported for the 2026 model year, before incentives, taxes, registration, dealer fees, accessories, and financing costs. Prices and inventory can vary by location, so the advertised starting price is not the same as the amount you will pay at the dealership.

How this 2026 cheapest-new-car ranking works

This is a broad-market ranking of new 2026 cars and crossovers sold in the United States. It uses the lowest listed price for the specified base trim and body style, with destination charges included. That approach is important because manufacturer websites commonly display a base MSRP before destination, while comparison sites may include destination in their headline price.

  • Included: the base version identified for each vehicle, plus its reported destination-inclusive starting price.
  • Excluded: sales tax, title and registration, dealer documentation fees, accessories, regional charges, financing costs, and temporary incentives.
  • Fuel economy: the reported combined estimate supplied for the comparison. “Up to” figures may apply only to particular configurations.
  • Scope: crossovers are included because they are direct alternatives to small sedans for many shoppers.
  • Timing: prices and specifications reflect the research available as of August 11, 2026. Dealer inventory and regional distribution may differ.

The strict price order matters. For example, the Chevrolet Trailblazer starts at $25,095 including destination, which is $40 less than the Kia Seltos at $25,135. The Trailblazer therefore ranks ahead of the Seltos even though some category-based lists place them in the opposite order.

Rank Vehicle and base version Starting price including destination Reported combined fuel economy Body style
1 2026 Hyundai Venue SE $21,695 31 mpg Subcompact crossover, FWD
2 2026 Chevrolet Trax LS $23,495 Up to 30 mpg Small crossover, FWD
3 2026 Kia K4 LX sedan $23,535 Up to 34 mpg Compact sedan
4 2026 Nissan Sentra S $23,845 Up to 34 mpg Compact sedan
5 2026 Hyundai Elantra SE $23,870 Up to 36 mpg Compact sedan
6 2026 Nissan Kicks S $23,925 Up to 31 mpg Subcompact crossover
7 2026 Toyota Corolla LE sedan $24,120 35 mpg; hybrid up to 50 mpg Compact sedan
8 2026 Chevrolet Trailblazer LS $25,095 Up to 31 mpg Subcompact crossover
9 2026 Kia Seltos LX $25,135 Up to 31 mpg Subcompact SUV
10 2026 Volkswagen Jetta S $25,270 33 mpg Compact sedan

There is a $3,575 difference between the first and tenth vehicles on this destination-inclusive list, but the vehicles are not equivalent. The Venue is a small front-wheel-drive crossover, while the Jetta is a larger traditional compact sedan. Equipment, passenger space, drivetrain choices, and the availability of hybrid or AWD versions can matter more than a few hundred dollars in starting price.

Before visiting a dealer, use a local shopping tool to check local inventory for the exact trim and drivetrain. Prices, incentives, installed options, dealer fees, and availability can vary substantially by ZIP code.

1. 2026 Hyundai Venue SE — $21,695

Best for: the lowest possible new-vehicle price with an upright crossover driving position.

The front-wheel-drive Hyundai Venue SE is the price leader, with a destination-inclusive starting price of $21,695 and a reported 31 mpg combined. Its standard equipment includes keyless entry, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and USB charging. Those basics make it more usable than a bare-bones economy car, especially for shoppers who want smartphone connectivity without moving to a higher trim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The main limitation is drivetrain choice: all-wheel drive is not available. The Venue is also a small subcompact crossover, so buyers should compare its rear-seat and cargo requirements with the larger crossovers farther down this list.

2. 2026 Chevrolet Trax LS — $23,495

Best for: shoppers who want a roomier small crossover without moving far above the lowest price.

The Chevrolet Trax LS costs $23,495 including destination. It uses a turbocharged three-cylinder engine and is rated at up to 30 mpg combined. Standard or listed equipment includes LED headlights and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while driver-assistance features are available depending on configuration.

The Trax is front-wheel drive only; Chevrolet does not offer an AWD option. Its value proposition is therefore space and crossover practicality rather than all-weather drivetrain capability. Chevrolet independently lists a $23,495 starting MSRP for the 2026 Trax, but shoppers should confirm whether the dealer’s displayed figure includes destination and any installed equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. 2026 Kia K4 LX sedan — $23,535

Best for: a traditional compact sedan with strong standard technology, or a buyer who may later want a hatchback version.

The Kia K4 replaced the Forte and ranks third at $23,535 including destination for the LX sedan. The K4 offers standard wireless smartphone connectivity and a 12.3-inch touchscreen, giving the base car a more modern technology package than many entry-level vehicles.

The K4 is also available as a hatchback for 2026, but the hatchback is not part of this price: it starts at $26,085 including destination. The sedan is the version used for the ranking. Because the K4 nameplate can appear in sedan-and-hatchback or broader “car” categories, it may be treated differently by other lists.

4. 2026 Nissan Sentra S — $23,845

Best for: a conventional sedan with a 2026 redesign and broad standard driver-assistance coverage.

KiNSMART - 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 1:38 Scale 5" Die Cast Metal Model Toy Muscle Car (Blue)
  • Pullback Action: Experience realistic racing with the pullback action feature.
  • Opening Doors: Explore the intricate interior details with the opening door feature.
  • 1:38 Scale: Enjoy a detailed 1:38 scale die-cast model (approx. 5 inches long).
  • Authentic Design: Modeled after the iconic 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500.
  • Display Piece: A must-have collectible for car enthusiasts and model collectors.

The 2026 Nissan Sentra starts at $23,845 including destination in this comparison and delivers up to 34 mpg combined. Nissan redesigned its exterior and interior styling for 2026 and added a larger standard infotainment display. Adaptive cruise control is included in the reported standard-technology package, while ProPILOT Assist and blind-spot intervention are available on higher configurations.

Nissan lists a $22,600 starting MSRP before destination charges, which illustrates why a manufacturer’s headline MSRP may not match a destination-inclusive comparison. The Sentra is a sedan, not a crossover, so it is worth considering if a lower seating position and traditional trunk are preferable to the Venue or Trax format.

5. 2026 Hyundai Elantra SE — $23,870

Best for: fuel-conscious sedan shoppers who want a roomy cabin and trunk.

The Hyundai Elantra SE starts at $23,870 including destination and has a reported fuel-economy rating of up to 36 mpg combined, the strongest maximum figure among the nonhybrid vehicles in this ranking. The compact sedan is known in the comparison for a roomy cabin and trunk, and the base configuration includes wireless smartphone connectivity and standard driver-assistance technology.

Hyundai’s long warranty is another reason the Elantra can appeal to budget-focused buyers, although warranty coverage should be read carefully for the exact vehicle and owner. The base engine is intended for economical transportation rather than strong performance, so acceleration should be part of the test drive.

6. 2026 Nissan Kicks S — $23,925

Best for: the least expensive crossover choice with an available AWD path.

The Nissan Kicks S starts at $23,925 including destination and returns up to 31 mpg combined. It is the least expensive AWD-available model in this comparison, but the quoted starting price represents the less expensive configuration. An AWD-equipped Kicks will cost more than the base vehicle, so buyers should compare the exact drivetrain and trim rather than assuming AWD is included in the headline price.

Higher trims can add a 12.3-inch screen and Bose audio. The Kicks therefore offers a way to move from an inexpensive base crossover toward a more highly equipped vehicle, but each upgrade reduces the price advantage over the sedans near it in the ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. 2026 Toyota Corolla LE sedan — $24,120

Best for: buyers who want a familiar compact sedan or the lowest-priced hybrid nameplate in this group.

The Corolla LE sedan starts at $24,120 including destination and has a reported 35 mpg combined. Toyota also offers the Corolla as a hatchback and a hybrid, but those are materially different prices: the hatchback starts at $26,560 and the hybrid at $25,970 in the same comparison.

The Corolla is the least expensive hybrid nameplate represented here, and its hybrid version can achieve up to 50 mpg combined. That does not make the $24,120 gas sedan a hybrid; shoppers must select the separate hybrid configuration and budget for its higher starting price. Toyota’s 2026 fleet material lists the Corolla LE base MSRP at $22,925 before destination and other charges.

8. 2026 Chevrolet Trailblazer LS — $25,095

Best for: crossover shoppers who want more configuration and an available AWD option than the Trax provides.

  • Authentic 1:36 Scale: Meticulously crafted 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang model car with impressive 5-inch length.
  • Realistic Details: Die-cast metal body with opening doors and eye-catching blue finish.
  • Interactive Play: Engaging pull-back action for thrilling motion across smooth surfaces.
  • Collectible Quality: Ideal for model car enthusiasts and collectors seeking miniature automotive replicas.
  • Brand: KiNSMART, a trusted name in die-cast vehicle models and toys.

The Chevrolet Trailblazer LS starts at $25,095 including destination and is rated at up to 31 mpg combined. It is positioned as a more configurable crossover than the Trax, with available AWD and more powertrain choice. Wireless smartphone integration is standard in the reported equipment overview.

The Trailblazer costs more than the Trax, but its available AWD and additional powertrain flexibility explain why it can be worth considering for shoppers whose needs go beyond the lowest purchase price. The base LS price is not the price of an AWD-equipped or heavily optioned Trailblazer.

9. 2026 Kia Seltos LX — $25,135

Best for: shoppers who prioritize small-SUV practicality and AWD availability.

The Kia Seltos LX starts at $25,135 including destination, only $40 more than the Trailblazer in this strict ranking. Kia positions it below the Sportage, and the Seltos offers practical cargo space, smartphone integration, and standard driver-assistance features in the comparison. AWD is available, although the lowest listed price is for the cheaper configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its relatively low price makes the Seltos one of the more accessible choices for buyers who specifically want a small SUV rather than a sedan. Confirm the drivetrain, equipment, and destination charge on the window sticker because the AWD version will not necessarily match the $25,135 starting figure.

10. 2026 Volkswagen Jetta S — $25,270

Best for: buyers who still want a spacious, traditional compact sedan with an automatic transmission.

The Volkswagen Jetta S is tenth at $25,270 including destination and has a reported 33 mpg combined. Its strengths include a spacious cabin, useful storage, and a newly standard 8-inch screen.

For 2026, the regular Jetta lineup no longer offers a manual transmission; the automatic is now the base configuration. That makes the listed price easier to compare with the automatic-equipped versions of other vehicles, but it also removes the manual-transmission alternative from the standard Jetta range.

Why other “cheapest car” lists look different

There is no single universal ranking unless the publication defines what counts as a car, which body styles are included, and whether destination is part of the advertised price.

Cars.com published a narrower March 2026 list of the ten least expensive automatic-equipped cars. It excludes crossovers that it classifies separately and begins with the Kia K4, followed by the Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta, Mazda3, Honda Civic, Subaru Impreza, Hyundai Sonata, and Kia K5. Its prices include destination but exclude incentives, taxes, and fees. That makes it useful for sedan and hatchback shoppers, but it does not represent the complete cheapest-new-vehicle market because it leaves out the less expensive Venue and Trax.

Car and Driver also separates its affordability coverage into categories. It places the K4 and Sentra among the least expensive traditional cars while putting the Venue and Trax at the top of its separate SUV category. Its published figures are not always directly comparable with this ranking because they are presented as starting prices rather than under one uniform destination-inclusive method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Category labels can create another apparent contradiction: a source may call the Sentra the least expensive sedan in one comparison while listing the K4 in a broader sedan-and-hatchback category. This article uses the K4 LX sedan’s $23,535 destination-inclusive price and sorts every vehicle numerically, which puts the K4 ahead of the Sentra.

What the advertised starting price leaves out

A $21,695 Venue or $23,535 K4 is not necessarily the amount shown on your final purchase order. The out-the-door figure can include:

  • destination or freight, if it was not already included in the advertised figure;
  • dealer documentation and other dealer fees;
  • dealer-installed accessories and market adjustments;
  • sales tax, title, registration, and local charges;
  • financing costs or negative equity from a trade-in; and
  • the effect of rebates, loyalty offers, college-graduate incentives, or other eligibility-based discounts.

Incentives can lower what a qualified buyer pays, but they do not change the base-MSRP ranking above. Conversely, a vehicle with a low advertised price may become less competitive if it is unavailable locally or carries expensive dealer-installed options.

How to verify the real price before you buy

  1. Confirm the exact vehicle. Match the model year, trim, body style, engine, transmission, and drivetrain. This is especially important for the Corolla, Kicks, K4, and any AWD-equipped crossover.
  2. Ask for a stock number or VIN. A dealer quote for an in-stock vehicle is more useful than a generic “starting at” advertisement.
  3. Request an itemized buyer’s order. It should separately show vehicle price, destination, dealer fees, accessories, taxes, registration, rebates, trade-in value, and financing-related charges.
  4. Compare multiple dealers using the same assumptions. Do not compare one quote after incentives with another quote before incentives, or an AWD vehicle with a front-wheel-drive base model.
  5. Check the final total, not only the monthly payment. A longer loan term can make an expensive vehicle appear cheaper month to month.
  6. Confirm availability and eligibility. Regional inventory and incentives vary, and not every trim is equally available in every state.

Price alone also cannot establish reliability, long-term ownership cost, safety superiority, or warranty-claim history. Those questions require separate evidence. This ranking supports a starting-price comparison; it should not be treated as a reliability or safety ranking.

Bottom line

The 2026 Hyundai Venue is the cheapest new vehicle in this broad U.S. comparison at $21,695 including destination. The Chevrolet Trax is the next-lowest-priced crossover, while the Kia K4 is the least expensive vehicle here in the traditional sedan grouping when its LX sedan price is sorted strictly. The Elantra stands out for reported gas fuel economy, the Corolla offers the least expensive hybrid nameplate, and the Nissan Kicks is the lowest-priced model with AWD availability.

Use the ranking to narrow the list, then compare dealer prices for an exact vehicle in your area. The buyer’s order—not the headline starting price—is the number that determines whether the deal is genuinely inexpensive.

What is the cheapest hybrid represented on this list?

The Toyota Corolla is the least expensive hybrid nameplate in the comparison. The Corolla hybrid starts at $25,970 including destination and can achieve up to 50 mpg combined. The $24,120 Corolla LE sedan is the separate gas-powered base configuration.

Why does another list say the Kia K4 or Nissan Sentra is the cheapest car?

Different lists use different scopes. Cars.com’s March 2026 list covers the least expensive automatic-equipped traditional cars and excludes crossovers, while this ranking includes crossovers and strictly sorts destination-inclusive prices. The K4 LX sedan is $23,535 here, ahead of the Sentra at $23,845.

Does the listed starting price include taxes and dealer fees?

No. The prices in this ranking include destination charges but exclude taxes, title, registration, dealer documentation fees, accessories, regional charges, incentives, and financing costs. Request an itemized buyer’s order to determine the actual out-the-door price.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 2026 Hyundai Venue is the price leader at $21,695 including destination. Choose based on the configuration you actually need—sedan, crossover, hybrid, or AWD—and verify the final buyer’s order because the advertised starting price is not the out-the-door cost.
