The 10 cars to watch
1. Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI
The ID. Polo GTI is one of the clearest attempts to translate a familiar performance badge into the electric era. Volkswagen has announced a launch target in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to change. Its appeal is less about replacing a particular petrol engine and more about preserving the compact, everyday hot-hatch idea with battery power. Final output, battery size, pricing and country-by-country availability have not been established in the announcement.

Volkswagen says it will present a new ID.4 in 2026. Because the ID.4 is a high-volume electric SUV rather than a niche halo product, the change could matter to a much larger audience than a specialist performance car. The announcement did not provide final specifications or a complete availability plan, so buyers should wait for market-specific details before treating the reveal as a confirmed retail launch.
3. Polestar 5
The Polestar 5 is a four-door electric grand tourer positioned above the brand’s more practical models. Polestar expected deliveries from summer 2026 and called it a performance-and-luxury halo car. CEO Michael Lohscheller described it as “our brand halo car, bringing a new level of performance and luxury to the grand-tourer segment.” That is the company’s positioning, not an independent assessment, and delivery timing remains a forecast.
4. 2026 Toyota RAV4
Toyota’s sixth-generation RAV4 is the most broadly relevant multi-powertrain vehicle on this list. The U.S.-focused announcement identifies hybrid and plug-in-hybrid choices and three design directions—Core, Sport and Rugged. The range includes Woodland and the first U.S.-market GR SPORT version.

For the 2026 RAV4 PHEV, Toyota Motor North America estimates up to 320 horsepower and up to 50 miles of all-electric driving. Those are manufacturer estimates, and actual range varies with conditions, equipment and driving. Toyota says the electric estimate is 20% higher than the previous PHEV’s 42-mile figure. The combination of conventional hybrid availability and a longer-range PHEV makes the RAV4 relevant to buyers who are not ready to choose a fully electric SUV.
5. Škoda Peaq
Škoda’s Peaq is planned as a fully electric flagship SUV derived from the Vision 7S concept and Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform. The company has targeted mid-2026 production, with Mladá Boleslav identified as the manufacturing location. Its importance is strategic: it would give Škoda a larger, more prominent electric family vehicle rather than another compact crossover. Final dimensions, specifications, prices and market launch sequence remain dependent on local announcements.

6. Maserati GranTurismo
Maserati announced an updated GranTurismo range in June 2026, retaining the model’s grand-touring role while revising the lineup. Maserati lists 582 horsepower for the GranTurismo Trofeo with its V6 Nettuno engine. That figure applies to the named Trofeo version, not automatically to every GranTurismo derivative. Trim availability and powertrain mixes should be checked in the relevant market.
7. Maserati Grecale
The Grecale receives new V6 versions as part of Maserati’s updated range. Maserati states 385 horsepower for the Grecale V6 and Grecale Modena V6. The specification belongs to those versions; it should not be generalized to every Grecale trim, including four-cylinder or other regional configurations. The update gives the luxury SUV a more performance-focused choice for customers who want Maserati’s six-cylinder character in a practical body style.

8. BMW iX3
Edmunds included the BMW iX3 among compelling electric vehicles expected to debut in 2026. The vehicle is described as a 2027 model-year iX3, so “debuting in 2026” refers to the reveal or market introduction timing, not the model year. That distinction matters when comparing registration dates, specifications and local ordering windows. Edmunds’ inclusion is an editorial forecast rather than a BMW-confirmed global delivery schedule.

9. Rivian R2
The five-seat Rivian R2 is intended to bring the company’s electric-SUV formula to a smaller and more accessible size. Edmunds reported Rivian’s planned spring 2026 release and the company’s promise of more than 300 miles of range. The range is a manufacturer claim relayed by Edmunds, not an independent test result, and the release date is projected. Buyers outside Rivian’s initial markets will need to verify whether ordering and service are available locally.

Electric vehicles dominate the innovation story
The ID. Polo GTI, ID.4, Polestar 5, Peaq, iX3, R2 and Slate Truck are all battery-electric vehicles. They cover very different needs: a small hot hatch, family SUVs, a luxury tourer and a configurable pickup. That variety is more significant than any single range figure.
Hybrids remain central to mainstream choice
The 2026 RAV4 demonstrates that electrification does not mean a single powertrain. Toyota’s announced HEV and PHEV versions target drivers who want lower fuel use or electric commuting without giving up the flexibility of a combustion engine on longer trips.
Timing and geography require caution
Volkswagen’s Q4 ID. Polo GTI target, Polestar’s summer delivery expectation, Škoda’s mid-year plan and Rivian’s spring release are not equivalent promises. Some are presentations, some deliveries and some projected releases. Toyota’s announcement concerns North America, while other models may launch first in different regions. Check the local importer or manufacturer site for ordering, certification, warranty and service information.
How to compare them before buying
- Start with use: decide whether you need a compact car, family SUV, grand tourer or pickup/SUV conversion.
- Choose the powertrain: compare BEV, HEV and PHEV charging access, driving pattern and tolerance for fuel use.
- Separate evidence levels: treat announced plans differently from editorial forecasts and manufacturer estimates.
- Verify your market: confirm local launch timing, trim names, equipment, charging standards, taxes and warranty coverage.
- Wait for independent tests: quoted range, horsepower and acceleration figures do not establish real-world efficiency, ride quality or charging performance.
Other 2026 cars worth watching
This is a curated shortlist, not an objective ranking. Chevrolet’s next Bolt and Subaru’s Trailseeker could also be included among notable electric introductions, and Mahindra’s BE 6 SPORTEQ is a region-specific option. Mahindra said deliveries for that series begin on 26 August 2026 in its India-market announcement; that date should not be read as a global availability promise.
