China had the world’s largest national vehicle market in 2025, with 34,399,621 new motor vehicles sold and registered, according to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA). The United States ranked second at 16,675,488. This ranking counts passenger and commercial vehicles, so “car markets” here means broad new-vehicle markets—not passenger cars alone.
The 10 biggest national vehicle markets in 2025
The ranking below uses OICA’s calendar-year 2025 country totals for new motor vehicle sales and registrations. It is ordered by annual unit volume, not by sales revenue.

What the ranking shows—and what it does not
China leads by a wide margin
China’s 2025 total was more than twice the U.S. total. The United States held second place, followed by India and Japan. These are comparisons of reported annual vehicle units, not judgments about the value or profitability of each market.

“Car market” includes commercial vehicles here
OICA’s figures cover motor vehicles, including passenger and commercial vehicles. They should not be read as a passenger-car-only ranking. Nor do they measure used-car transactions, vehicle production, exports, ownership per person, spending in currency, or electric-vehicle share.
Regional totals use OICA’s categories
OICA reported 2025 sales of 18,630,198 vehicles for Europe, 24,864,617 for the Americas, 55,018,183 for Asia/Oceania/Middle East, and 1,285,408 for Africa. These are OICA regional groupings; in particular, Asia/Oceania/Middle East is a combined category, not a figure for Asia alone.

How to interpret and compare the figures
- Use the year: this is a calendar-year 2025 ranking, not a 2026 full-year list.
- Keep the measure consistent: compare annual new motor vehicle sales and registrations with the same measure, rather than mixing in production, retail deliveries, or passenger-car-only totals.
- Separate volume from other measures: a larger unit count does not by itself mean higher per-capita ownership, greater vehicle spending, more production, or a higher EV share.
- Treat rankings as time-specific: country positions can change as new annual data are published.
OICA President Shailesh Chandra described the 2025 figures as “a snapshot of an industry in transition” in the organization’s April 23, 2026 release. The release also quotes OICA Secretary General François Roudier calling the data “a map of industrial repositioning.”
