The 10 Best 650-Class Street Bikes of All Time, Ranked

The Suzuki SV650 takes the top spot in this ranking of the best 650-class street bikes, followed by the Yamaha MT-07, Honda CB650R, Kawasaki Ninja 650, and seven other influential middleweights.

The Suzuki SV650 is the best all-around 650-class street bike ever made. It is not the most powerful or technologically advanced motorcycle here, but its 645cc V-twin, approachable chassis, narrow proportions, useful midrange, affordability, and long-running relevance make it the strongest total package. The Yamaha MT-07 is the better pick for immediate torque and playful handling; the Honda CB650R is the choice for modern inline-four character; and the Kawasaki Ninja 650 is the most practical faired sport bike.

Below are the 10 best 600–700cc street-oriented motorcycles, ranked by the combination of performance, accessibility, reliability, versatility, equipment, historical importance, and distinctiveness—not by dyno output alone.

How this ranking works

“650 class” is used here to mean the modern middleweight street-bike category: roughly 600–700cc motorcycles built primarily for paved-road riding. That includes naked bikes, faired sport models, and practical road motorcycles at 600cc, 645cc, 649cc, 659cc, 660cc, 689cc, and 696cc. It excludes substantially larger 750cc-plus motorcycles and adventure or touring bikes whose main purpose is not street riding.

“Best of all time” cannot be settled by horsepower alone. This ranking weighs usable engine character, chassis balance, accessibility, reliability, parts availability, production longevity, historical importance, versatility, equipment for the model’s era, and distinctiveness. It is an editorial ranking based on manufacturer records and model history, not a claim of personal ownership or independent test riding.

Specifications vary by country and model year. Power, curb weight, ABS, emissions equipment, electronics, suspension components, and even model names can differ between markets. Current figures are identified as current or model-year-specific; older motorcycles should be judged primarily by condition and service history.

1. Suzuki SV650: the all-time all-rounder

The Suzuki SV650 takes the top spot because very few motorcycles combine so many desirable traits so consistently. Its 645cc 90-degree V-twin has genuine mechanical character, useful midrange, narrow packaging, and a smooth pull from low rpm through its 10,000-rpm redline. The trellis-frame chassis and approachable ergonomics make it easy to use in traffic, while the engine remains rewarding after a rider gains experience.

The SV650’s appeal is not tied to one fashionable specification sheet. It has remained relevant through changing motorcycle trends because it is engaging without being intimidating, characterful without requiring exotic maintenance, and capable enough for commuting, back-road riding, basic touring, and modification. Low-rpm assist helps reduce the chance of a clumsy stall when pulling away.

It is not the outright performance winner. Compared with newer rivals, the suspension and brakes are relatively old-school, and the bike offers less electronic sophistication. Those shortcomings matter if premium equipment or track performance is the priority. They matter much less when the goal is one affordable motorcycle that can teach, commute, entertain, and remain useful for years.

Best for: Riders who want one motorcycle to learn on, commute with, personalize, and continue enjoying after their skills develop.

2. Yamaha MT-07: the torque-and-fun benchmark

The Yamaha MT-07 made a particularly convincing case for the modern lightweight middleweight. Its 689cc crossplane-concept parallel twin delivers a strong pulse of low- and midrange torque, while the compact chassis gives the motorcycle a light, agile feel at ordinary road speeds.

For a European-specification MT-07, Yamaha lists 68.0 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm and 74.8 PS at 9,000 rpm. Those figures do not tell the whole story: the MT-07 feels entertaining because its performance is accessible rather than locked away at the top of the rev range. It is compact and unintimidating at low speed, but still lively on winding roads.

Earlier generations were often criticized for basic suspension and brake components. The model family’s overall ranking should not be mistaken for a claim that every model year is equally equipped. Yamaha’s 2025 update brought electronic throttle control, a revised frame and rear arm, updated suspension, new wheels, and a 5-inch TFT display. An optional Y-AMT automated manual transmission was also offered in Japan, so availability is market-specific.

Best for: Riders who value torque, agility, affordability, and daily usability more than maximum equipment or a high-revving engine.

3. Honda CB650R: the modern inline-four street-bike standard

The Honda CB650R is one of the clearest modern answers for riders who still want a four-cylinder naked motorcycle. Its 649cc liquid-cooled inline-four is smooth, refined, and increasingly rewarding as the revs rise. That character separates it from the torque-first parallel twins even when their real-world performance overlaps.

Honda’s European specification lists 70 kW, 63 Nm of torque, and a peak-power point at 12,000 rpm. Honda’s current U.S. specification for the 2026 E-Clutch model lists a 31.9-inch seat, 456-pound curb weight, Showa SFF-BP inverted forks, dual 310mm front discs with radial four-piston calipers, ABS, and a 649cc engine. The market and model-year differences are important when comparing those figures.

The CB650R has the chassis and braking hardware to match its polished engine. Honda also introduced its E-Clutch technology on the CB650R and CBR650R for the 2024 model year, allowing clutch operation to be automated while retaining conventional controls for riders who prefer them.

The trade-off is mass and delivery. The CB650R does not feel as instantly light as an MT-07 or SV650, and its best engine character arrives higher in the rev range. In exchange, it supplies the smoothness, sound, and top-end rush that make a four-cylinder street bike special.

  • Heavily cushioned and comfortable interior, Removable and washable;

Best for: Riders who want contemporary brakes, suspension, ABS, and optional E-Clutch convenience without giving up classic inline-four character.

4. Kawasaki Ninja 650: the practical sport-bike icon

The Kawasaki Ninja 650 occupies one of the most useful positions in motorcycling: it looks and feels like a sport bike, but its riding position and parallel-twin engine remain friendly enough for commuting and longer road use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current Kawasaki specifications identify a 649cc liquid-cooled parallel twin producing 67 hp and 48.5 lb-ft of torque, with a 31.1-inch seat. Depending on specification and market, equipment includes ABS, Kawasaki Traction Control, a TFT instrument display, and an assist-and-slipper clutch. Kawasaki describes the riding position as upright enough for daily use while retaining Ninja styling and midrange performance.

The Ninja 650 is not a small supersport. It does not provide the top-end rush of a 600cc four-cylinder race-replica motorcycle, and its priorities are comfort and usability rather than lap-time focus. That is precisely why it works for so many riders. One motorcycle can handle commuting, weekend rides, occasional touring, and spirited public-road riding without demanding a race-bike posture.

The 2017 redesign improved the ER-6f-derived formula by addressing weight, emissions, and fuel-efficiency disadvantages of the predecessor family. Used examples should still be assessed by year and condition rather than by the reputation of the name alone.

Best for: Riders who want faired sport-bike appearance and road capability without the discomfort or narrow operating range of a supersport.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Honda CB600F Hornet / 599: the original modern middleweight street fighter

Honda’s CB600F Hornet helped define the modern naked middleweight. Introduced in 1998, it was a 600cc naked road-sport motorcycle with the visual simplicity of a standard bike and the performance potential of a sport-bike engine. Honda sold the European Hornet 600 in North America as the 599 beginning in 2003.

The 2007 update used a CBR600RR-based four-cylinder engine retuned for stronger low- and midrange usability. It also brought fuel injection, an aluminum frame, and radial tires. That combination made the Hornet more than a stripped-down commuter: it was a serious road motorcycle with real top-end performance and everyday ergonomics.

The Hornet ranks this highly because of its influence as well as its riding qualities. It demonstrated that riders did not need full fairings or an extreme riding position to enjoy a high-revving four-cylinder engine. Many later naked middleweights refined this formula.

Age changes the buying decision. A used Hornet or 599 needs an inspection of its suspension, charging system, rubber components, brakes, fasteners, and maintenance history. The model family’s historical importance does not make every surviving example a good purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Riders who want an older, simpler naked motorcycle with a rev-happy four-cylinder engine and a strong place in street-bike history.

6. Aprilia RS 660: the modern performance and electronics leader

The Aprilia RS 660 brought a level of chassis ambition and electronic sophistication that was unusual in the 650 class. It is a faired road sport bike designed to deliver serious performance without moving to a liter-class motorcycle.

Aprilia describes the current RS 660 as a 659cc Euro 5+ parallel twin producing 105 hp. Its APRC electronics package uses a six-axis inertial measurement unit and can include cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control, launch control, multiple riding modes, cruise control, and quickshifter capability. The RS 660 Factory adds Öhlins suspension and other premium equipment.

Rank #3
1Storm Dual Sport Motorcycle Motocross Off Road Full Face Helmet Dual Visor Matt Black, Size L
  • Advance Dual Sports and Dual Visor Design (Inner Smoked Visor and Outer Clear Shield);
  • Light weight durable aerodynamic thermoplastic alloy shell;
  • Heavily cushioned and comfortable interior, Removable and washable
  • Beautiful glossy UV protective finish;
  • DOT Approved; Meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 (FMVSS 218).

In pure performance terms, the RS 660 may be the most capable motorcycle on this list. Its aluminum chassis, compact dimensions, aerodynamic bodywork, rider aids, and track-ready intent make it much more technically ambitious than traditional budget middleweights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It ranks sixth because “best” here includes universality. The RS 660’s committed sport-bike ergonomics, higher purchase cost, and greater electronic and maintenance complexity make it less relaxed as an everyday motorcycle than an SV650, MT-07, or Ninja 650. For a rider who prioritizes road-and-track performance, however, it could reasonably be number one.

Best for: Riders who want serious sporting ability, modern electronics, and track-day potential in a manageable displacement class.

7. Triumph Trident 660: the accessible modern triple

The Triumph Trident 660 gives this category an engine layout that the Japanese twin-heavy market cannot duplicate: a 660cc inline three-cylinder engine. It combines the compact dimensions of a middleweight with a distinctive engine pulse and a stronger top-end personality than a typical parallel twin.

The listed Trident specification includes a liquid-cooled inline triple, six-speed transmission, 41mm Showa SFF-BP forks, twin 310mm front discs, a 31.7-inch seat, and a 419-pound wet weight. Triumph’s 2025 model added optimized cornering ABS and traction control, a Sport riding mode, connectivity, cruise control, and Triumph Shift Assist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model year matters especially here. Triumph announced a substantial 2026 update with 94 hp, 50.2 lb-ft of torque, a revised frame, and a revised rear suspension unit. Those figures and features should not be applied backward to every Trident 660 on the used market.

The Trident is refined and approachable without being anonymous. It sits below the more universal choices because its strengths are less about bargain simplicity and more about style, finish, and three-cylinder character.

Best for: Riders who want a stylish, accessible roadster with more top-end personality than most middleweight twins.

8. Ducati Monster 696: the design-defining Italian naked bike

The Ducati Monster 696 earns its place through influence and emotional appeal as much as through performance. Ducati introduced it for the 2008 range as an evolution of the Monster 695, reporting 696cc displacement, 80 hp, 50.6 lb-ft of torque, and a 9 percent power increase over the predecessor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The air-cooled V-twin, compact proportions, trellis-frame identity, and unmistakable styling made the Monster 696 an important design object as well as a motorcycle. It helped make the naked bike aspirational: a machine that could be chosen for its visual and mechanical personality rather than merely its practicality.

That personality comes with used-bike qualifications. A Monster 696 is an older Italian motorcycle, so condition, service documentation, belt-service history, charging-system health, suspension condition, and parts availability in the buyer’s region matter greatly. It is not as universally sensible as the Japanese all-rounders, but it offers a kind of character they cannot reproduce.

Best for: Riders who value design, V-twin character, and mechanical theater as much as low running costs and maximum practicality.

9. Yamaha FZ6 / FZ6 Fazer: the high-revving four-cylinder sport-tourer

The Yamaha FZ6 and half-faired FZ6 Fazer are among the strongest choices for riders who want a four-cylinder engine but need more practical road manners than a supersport provides. Their 600cc liquid-cooled inline-four was derived from the YZF-R6 engine.

For the European model, Yamaha listed 97.9 PS at 12,000 rpm and 63.1 Nm of torque at 10,000 rpm. That engine gives the FZ6 a very different personality from the MT-07 or Ninja 650: it is less immediately forceful at low rpm but comes alive as the revs build.

The upright ergonomics, passenger practicality, and available half-fairing make the FZ6 Fazer particularly useful for commuting and longer road rides. Yamaha later revised fuel-injection mapping, the seat, rear arm, front brake caliper, and cowl design.

Its age is the main limitation today. Used condition, previous modifications, charging health, suspension wear, brake condition, and service records are more important than the original brochure specification. A well-maintained FZ6 remains a fast, practical, and distinctive road motorcycle; a neglected one can quickly erase its value advantage.

Best for: Riders who want high-revving sport-bike character, upright ergonomics, passenger usability, and optional wind protection.

10. Kawasaki Z650: the naked counterpart that keeps the formula simple

The Kawasaki Z650 uses the company’s mature 649cc parallel-twin platform in a naked package. Recent specifications identify 67 hp, approximately 47–48.5 lb-ft of torque depending on model year, a trellis frame, horizontal back-link rear suspension, traction control, ABS, and a 31.1-inch seat.

Kawasaki’s original technical description emphasized low- and midrange torque, a lighter frame, ease of handling, and broad appeal from beginner through advanced rider. That formula remains the Z650’s greatest strength. It is compact, manageable, easy to use in town, and sufficiently entertaining for ordinary back-road riding.

The Z650 ranks tenth not because it is poor, but because several rivals are more historically important or more distinctive. The SV650 has more V-twin identity, the MT-07 has a stronger torque-and-fun reputation, the CB650R has a unique four-cylinder character, and the Trident has a triple. The Z650 is the honest choice for someone who wants a modern naked middleweight without a dramatic personality or a premium price position.

The 2026 Z650 S update adds revised styling, a 4.3-inch TFT display, smartphone connectivity, and an accessory quickshifter. Availability and exact equipment should be confirmed for the buyer’s market.

Best for: Riders who want a straightforward naked bike with manageable dimensions, useful torque, ABS, traction control, and current-day practicality.

Important near-misses

Triumph Daytona 660

The Daytona 660 is a strong current alternative if “street bike” includes a more committed faired sport motorcycle. Triumph’s 2025 specification lists a 660cc triple, 95 hp, 69 Nm, twin 310mm front discs, Showa SFF-BP forks, and a 443-pound wet weight. The 2026 update adds adjustable Showa front suspension, standard Triumph Shift Assist, and Metzeler M9RR tires.

It is not ranked above the Trident because the two motorcycles serve different priorities. The Daytona is the more obvious choice for sport riding and wind protection; the Trident is the more relaxed naked roadster. A ranking that emphasized sporting ability over all-round accessibility could include the Daytona in the top ten.

Honda CBR650R

The CBR650R is another credible inclusion, particularly for riders who favor sport-touring and fairing protection. It shares the important 649cc inline-four family with the CB650R, but its fairing and riding position make it a different use case. Choosing between the two Hondas is less about engine quality than whether the rider wants a naked roadster or a faired road motorcycle.

Why the list contains several parallel twins

The MT-07, Ninja 650, and Z650 overlap in engine architecture and intended use. Their differences are not enormous on paper, but their tuning, ergonomics, styling, equipment, and throttle response produce different ownership experiences. The MT-07 is the playful torque choice; the Ninja is the practical faired sport bike; and the Z650 is the straightforward naked alternative.

What to check when buying an older 650-class bike

For historical models such as the Hornet, FZ6, Monster 696, and older SV650s, the ranking describes the model family—not the condition of a particular listing. A carefully maintained older motorcycle can be an excellent purchase; a neglected example can require more money than a newer, less prestigious bike.

  • Service records: Look for documented oil changes, valve inspections where applicable, brake-fluid changes, coolant service, and completed manufacturer maintenance.
  • Cold start: Ask to see the engine started from cold. Listen for abnormal mechanical noise, check idle quality, and look for excessive smoke.
  • Charging system: Test battery and charging voltage rather than assuming an apparently healthy motorcycle has a healthy electrical system.
  • Suspension: Inspect fork tubes for pitting or oil leakage and check the rear shock for wear. Original suspension components may be tired even when the motorcycle looks clean.
  • Brakes and tires: Check disc thickness, caliper condition, brake hoses, tire age, tread, and signs of long-term storage.
  • Chain and sprockets: Look for tight spots, hooked sprocket teeth, seized links, and excessive slack. These model families use chain final drive, but exact equipment should be verified by model year.
  • Crash damage and modifications: Inspect bar ends, engine covers, frame stops, forks, wheels, and fasteners. Poorly executed wiring or aggressive engine modifications can create expensive problems.
  • Identification and legal status: Confirm the VIN, title or registration, recall status, and local emissions or inspection requirements before paying.

Do not compare a used 599’s original horsepower figure directly with a current CB650R’s equipment package or a new RS 660’s electronics. The age gap is part of the buying decision.

What you need before riding

The motorcycle is only one part of the purchase. A properly fitted full-face motorcycle helmet is the most important equipment decision in this category. Check the certification marking required or recognized in your jurisdiction—such as DOT or ECE where applicable—then prioritize correct fit, undamaged materials, and a replacement plan after a serious impact or the manufacturer’s service life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For commuting and navigation, a vibration-damping motorcycle phone mount can be useful, but “universal” does not guarantee safe fitment. Check handlebar diameter, clearance from the controls, locking security, weather exposure, and whether the mount provides vibration isolation appropriate for the phone. Confirm fitment for the exact motorcycle and model year.

Because these motorcycles use chain final drive, owners who perform basic maintenance may also find a motorcycle rear paddock stand useful. Verify swingarm or spool compatibility before buying; stand fitment is not automatically universal. A stand is an ownership convenience, not a substitute for safe support procedures.

The final answer

The Suzuki SV650 is the best overall 650-class street bike because it delivers the broadest combination of accessibility, engine character, versatility, durability, and long-term usefulness. The Yamaha MT-07 is the better choice for immediate torque and playful handling. The Honda CB650R is the pick for a refined inline-four experience, while the Kawasaki Ninja 650 is the most practical faired sport-bike recommendation.

There is no contradiction in placing the Aprilia RS 660 higher for performance, the Trident 660 higher for triple-cylinder character, or the Monster 696 higher for design. The numerical ranking is a guide, not a substitute for matching the motorcycle to the way you ride. Seat height, riding position, fairing protection, service access, local parts supply, insurance, and the condition of a specific example can all outweigh a one-place difference on this list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Suzuki SV650 ranked first?

The SV650 is the best overall choice because it combines a distinctive 645cc V-twin, approachable ergonomics, narrow packaging, useful midrange, versatility, and a long production history. Newer rivals offer better brakes, suspension, or electronics, but few match its balance.

Which 650-class motorcycle is best for a beginner?

For a new rider, the SV650, Yamaha MT-07, Kawasaki Ninja 650, and Kawasaki Z650 are the most approachable starting points on this list. However, engine size alone does not determine suitability. Rider height, throttle control, experience, training, and local licensing rules matter, and formal motorcycle training is strongly recommended.

Which 650-class street bike is fastest?

The Aprilia RS 660 is the most performance-focused motorcycle in the ranking, with a 105-hp parallel twin, aluminum chassis, aerodynamic bodywork, and advanced IMU-based rider aids. The Honda CB650R and older Hornet or FZ6 offer a different kind of performance through high-revving inline-four engines.

Which 650-class bike is best for highway riding and touring?

The Kawasaki Ninja 650 is the strongest choice among the ranked bikes for riders who want fairing protection, upright ergonomics, commuting ability, and occasional touring. The Yamaha FZ6 Fazer is also attractive as a used sport-tourer, while the Triumph Daytona 660 is a modern near-miss for more committed sport riding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are older 600cc and 650cc motorcycles still worth buying?

Yes, but the motorcycle’s condition is more important than its model reputation. Check service records, charging-system health, suspension, fork seals, brakes, tires, chain and sprockets, crash damage, wiring, VIN, and legal status. An older motorcycle with complete records is usually a better purchase than a cheaper example with unknown maintenance.

Why are the Triumph Daytona 660 and Honda CBR650R not in the top ten?

The Daytona 660 and Honda CBR650R are strong alternatives, but they serve more specific faired sport or sport-touring roles. The ranking prioritizes the broadest definition of street-bike usefulness, so they are discussed as near-misses rather than treated as failures.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the Suzuki SV650 if you want the safest all-round recommendation. Choose the Yamaha MT-07 for torque and low-speed fun, the Honda CB650R for four-cylinder refinement, the Kawasaki Ninja 650 for practical sport-bike use, and the Aprilia RS 660 for the most serious performance package. For older Hornet, FZ6, Monster, and SV650 examples, condition and service history matter more than the original ranking.
