The Royal Thai Army evaluated a Thai-developed 4×4 military truck prototype from September 2–4, 2024, at two sites: a tactical training ground in Prachinburi Province and the Army Transportation Department’s vehicle driving and testing ground in Kanchanaburi Province. The publicly reported event confirms trials took place; it does not establish a successful result, Army selection, production order, or entry into service.
What was tested, and who conducted the evaluation?
Thailand’s Defence Technology Institute (DTI) developed the prototype. The Army’s Ordnance Materiel Rebuild Center (OMRC), under the Ordnance Department, conducted the testing and evaluation, with Army representatives observing. Defense Studies reported the event and its dates on September 16, 2024: Defense Studies’ account of the field evaluation.
The vehicle is described as a Thai-developed prototype based on the Czech Tatra 815-7 family. That description does not mean it is a production Tatra model or that Tatra developed the complete prototype. Reporting describes independent suspension with swing semi-axles. Army Recognition later summarized the vehicle and trials in an August 27, 2025 article: Army Recognition’s report.
Where did the trials take place?
The evaluation covered two reported locations, not only Kanchanaburi. One was the tactical training ground associated with the 2nd Infantry Division Queen’s Guard in Prachinburi Province. The other was the Army Transportation Department’s vehicle driving and testing ground in Kanchanaburi Province. The available reporting does not give a more specific address for the Kanchanaburi site.

What did the prototype do during testing?
AAG_th’s Thai-language report dated September 9, 2024, lists mobility, troop transport, and the carriage of equipment and logistical supplies among the activities. It also describes tests on gradients and side slopes, plus obstacle crossing on varied terrain: AAG_th’s account of the test activities.
- Rough and undulating concrete
- Mud, water, and sand
- Logs crossed on straight and curved routes
- Large stones and gravel
These are reported test activities, not published performance findings. The reporting provides no numerical scores, pass/fail result, range, payload result, speed, or official evaluation report. It therefore does not establish how well the truck performed on any of the courses.

Does the rear body indicate that the truck is armored?
Reports describe a trapezoidal, hemispherical rear cargo compartment. One defense report speculates that the shape may support protection from improvised explosive devices or small-caliber fire, but provides no verified armor rating, ballistic standard, blast-test result, or official explanation of the design’s intended protection. The body shape alone is not evidence that the vehicle is armored to any particular standard.
Does the trial mean the Army is buying the truck?
No procurement decision is confirmed in the available reporting. Secondary reports describe an Army requirement for 4×4 trucks in the 1.25-to-2.5-tonne capacity range and identify existing vehicles in those classes. That range is reported as a requirement, not a measured prototype payload or a trial result. The same reporting raises tactical limitations or maintenance concerns about some legacy options; those are claims attributed to the reports, not independently verified assessments.

None of this establishes prototype acceptance, selection, production, funding, a contract award, or entry into service. Testing is one part of evaluation, not proof of a purchase.
Why a Tatra-based chassis may be relevant
Defense reporting says the Thai Army already uses Tatra 6×6 chassis in connection with the M758 ATMG self-propelled artillery system and the DTI D11A multiple-launch-rocket-system prototype. That background helps explain the relevance of the Tatra family, but it does not demonstrate that the Army will procure this 4×4 truck.

What would establish whether the prototype is suitable?
The published trial descriptions identify the kinds of terrain and tasks examined, but do not provide comparable measurements or an acceptance decision. A meaningful assessment against other 4×4 options would need evidence on:
