Short answer: Tesla’s current U.S. program, called “Refer and Earn,” offers benefits for qualifying purchases and demo drives, but Tesla’s terms do not list a current free-car reward or state a current reward amount. The page’s vehicle-sweepstakes results are historical, with drawings dated in 2023 and 2024—not evidence of an active free-car promotion.
What Tesla’s current referral program offers
Tesla’s U.S. “Refer and Earn” page describes three ways to qualify for program benefits: a first-time buyer can order through a friend’s referral link, an existing owner can refer a friend who orders or completes a first demo drive, and an existing owner can buy another qualifying product using the same Tesla Account. The terms are effective August 24, 2024, and Tesla’s page says it was updated February 24, 2026. They do not state a current benefit amount. Tesla’s official U.S. program terms are the place to check the offer currently shown for a particular order.
| Pathway | Who it is for | Qualifying action |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer benefit | A person who has never owned a qualifying Tesla product | Use a friend’s link before ordering a qualifying product; the benefit is only for the buyer’s first qualifying purchase. |
| Referrer benefit | An eligible Tesla owner sharing a link from the Tesla app | A friend places a qualifying order or completes a first demo drive through the link. The benefit appears as pending until its Grant Date. |
| Loyalty benefit | An existing owner | Buy another qualifying product using the same Tesla Account. |
Can you win a free Tesla car now?
The current terms page does not say that a free car is presently available as a referral reward. It lists past sweepstakes winners and drawing dates: Cybertruck Foundation Series drawings on May 14, 2024 and January 26, 2024; a Model Y Long Range drawing on January 10, 2024; and a Model 3 Performance drawing on October 5, 2023. Tesla says the winners were notified. These are historical results, not confirmation of an open sweepstakes.
Before placing an order or sharing a link on the assumption that it could earn a vehicle, check the current terms and offer shown in the Tesla app or on Tesla’s site for your region. The U.S. page says terms can change, and rewards may differ by jurisdiction and qualifying product.

Which products and purchases qualify
Tesla lists Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, and Tesla-installed solar panels for buyer and loyalty benefits and purchase-based referrer benefits. Solar panels and other qualifying energy products must be installed by Tesla. Demo-drive referral benefits are listed for Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck.
- Cybertruck exception: Cybertruck Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive is eligible for loyalty benefits only; it does not qualify for buyer or referrer benefits.
- New vehicles only: Certified Pre-Owned vehicles do not qualify. A buyer must custom order or buy a new inventory vehicle through the referral link.
- Energy products: Tesla installation is required for qualifying energy purchases.
How to use a referral link
- For the buyer: Open a friend’s referral link before placing the order, then purchase an eligible product through that link. Tesla says the link cannot be added after an order has been placed.
- For the referrer: Find “Refer and Earn” in the Tesla app and share the link with a friend. Tesla’s terms state that the feature requires app version 4.36.1 or later; app requirements may change, so check the app listing or the current app.
- For a returning owner: Place the qualifying purchase using the same Tesla Account associated with the existing qualifying product.
A referral link cannot be used by the same Tesla Account more than once. A participant must own a qualifying product in their account or be purchasing a first qualifying product through a valid link. If an owner transfers or removes all qualifying products, the link stops being valid for new referrals until the owner again takes delivery of a qualifying vehicle or activates a qualifying energy product during the program.

Limits, regional rules, and prohibited conduct
Tesla’s U.S. terms set different limits for each pathway. They also say a buyer receives no buyer benefit if the referrer has already reached the applicable referrer limit.
| Benefit pathway | Tesla’s stated limit |
|---|---|
| Buyer | One benefit for the buyer’s first qualifying purchase |
| Purchase referrals | Up to 10 order referrals per calendar year |
| Demo-drive referrals | Up to 30 first demo-drive referrals over the account lifetime |
| Loyalty | Up to 10 benefits over the account lifetime |
Eligibility also depends on location. Ohio and Virginia residents can qualify for buyer and loyalty benefits, but not referrer benefits. Tesla says benefits are subject to local law. The terms prohibit paid advertising, selling referral links, and paying or offering incentives for people to use them; Tesla may withhold benefits for violations or bad-faith behavior. The terms also say the program will not remain open indefinitely.

What Tesla Credits can be used for—and when they expire
Benefits are not cash: Tesla says credits are non-transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash. In regions where the Tesla Shop has launched, listed uses include Supercharging, eligible new vehicle or energy purchases, some service balances, Tesla Shop purchases, Tesla Insurance payments, and upgrades such as subscriptions. Restrictions vary by use: for example, certain Supercharging or subscription balances must be paid entirely with credits, and credits cannot pay for an Extended Service Agreement subscription. Credits also cannot be used for Tesla gift cards or alcohol.
Credits expire 12 months after the Grant Date. The Tesla app Wallet shows the expiration date, and Tesla says it emails a reminder 30 days before expiration. For eligible purchases, credits can be selected as payment and combined with another payment method; qualifying energy purchases must be installed by Tesla.
