Tesla’s October 7, 2025 announcement delivered lower-priced Standard versions of the existing Model Y and Model 3—not a confirmed all-new EV. Before the event, Tesla’s teaser prompted speculation that a more affordable vehicle was coming; the reveal clarified what the company was offering.
What did Tesla announce on Tuesday?
Tesla introduced lower-priced Standard versions of two vehicles already in its lineup: the Model Y and Model 3. The announcement was a new set of versions, not the debut of a distinct new vehicle, according to the Associated Press’s October 7, 2025 report.
That distinction separates the announcement from the expectation surrounding it. Reuters reported on October 6 that investors and analysts were anticipating a more affordable vehicle after Tesla posted short teaser videos. That was market interpretation before the event, not confirmation from Tesla of what it would announce. Reuters’ October 6 report, republished by TradingView, described a video showing a vehicle and another pointing to October 7.
What were the launch-era prices?
The Associated Press reported U.S. announcement prices of just under $40,000 for the Model Y Standard and under $37,000 for the Model 3 Standard. It said eligible New York residents using a state rebate could bring the Model 3 below $35,000. These are historical price descriptions from the October 2025 announcement, not current quotes or prices that apply in every state or country.

| Model 3 Standard for eligible New York residents | Below $35,000 | Associated Press example that depended on a New York state rebate; not a general price. |
The Associated Press’s announcement report does not establish what these versions cost now, what incentives remain available, or whether the same configurations are offered in every market. Check Tesla’s current local listing and the relevant incentive rules before treating an old launch price as a buying figure.
What did the cheaper versions give up?
The lower price came with equipment and feature reductions, according to the Associated Press’s October 7, 2025 coverage. Its report described these launch-era differences; it is not a current configurator or a complete trim-by-trim specification sheet.

| Reported item | Model Y Standard | Model 3 Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Driving range | 321 miles, as reported at launch by the Associated Press in 2025; not verified here as a current specification. | Reduced range versus the more expensive version, according to the Associated Press; an exact figure was not stated in that report. |
| Cabin materials | Fabric upholstery, according to the Associated Press. | Not stated in the Associated Press report. |
| Audio | Fewer speakers, according to the Associated Press; the report did not state a speaker count. | Not stated in the Associated Press report. |
| Glass roof | No panoramic glass roof, according to the Associated Press. | Not stated in the Associated Press report. |
| Rear-seat screen | No second-row touchscreen, according to the Associated Press. | Not stated in the Associated Press report. |
| Other equipment | Not stated in the Associated Press report. | Ambient lighting and other features were reduced or omitted, according to the Associated Press; the report did not give a complete itemized list. |
The comparison shows why “low-cost Tesla” could mean a less-equipped version of a familiar model rather than an entirely new, cheaper vehicle. It does not establish the full specification gap between Standard and other versions; anyone comparing cars should use the current official specification for the market and configuration they are considering.
Why did the teaser create expectations of a new EV?
The teaser arrived as attention was focused on the possibility of a more affordable Tesla. Reuters reported that investors and analysts expected such a vehicle after the short videos appeared. The videos themselves, as described in that report, pointed to an October 7 event but did not establish the product or reveal that it would be a new model.

In an October 2, 2026 release, Tesla reported producing 464,391 vehicles and delivering 486,532 in the third quarter of 2026; 478,237 of those deliveries were Model 3/Y. Those are company-reported figures. Tesla cautioned that deliveries and energy-storage deployments are only two measures and should not be relied on by themselves as an indicator of quarterly financial results. They also do not show that the October 2025 teaser or Standard versions caused a particular sales outcome. Tesla’s third-quarter 2026 release provides the company’s figures and qualification.
