Why the early-2025 date was misleading
In a September 3, 2024 report, Reuters said Tesla planned to begin producing a six-seat Model Y in China in late 2025, citing two people with direct knowledge of the plan. Reuters also reported that a refreshed five-seat Model Y was expected in early 2025. In January 2025, CnEVPost noted that Tesla’s China website displayed a seating-layout option while only a five-seat version was available there. CarNewsChina reported dimensions from a Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology sales-license filing. The figures are filing specifications as reported by the outlet, not independent measurements. Its comparison vehicle is a five-seat Model Y.

What the third row may mean for passengers and cargo
CarNewsChina relayed observations from EV Insights’ visit to a Tesla showroom in China. The account described tight headroom in the third row, limited thigh support and little luggage room when all three rows were occupied. It also noted a raised center hump and said a visitor who was 170 cm tall had some legroom. These are attributed showroom observations, not a controlled comfort or cargo test. The practical question is therefore not just whether the Model YL has three rows, but how often all six seats and the cargo area need to be used at once. The reported observations suggest a trade-off: an extra seating row, with limited space for passengers and luggage when it is occupied.

CarNewsChina reported that the Model YL officially launched in China on August 19, 2025, at a starting price of 339,000 yuan, with deliveries expected to begin in September 2025.
