The company says it combines those steps in one online transaction and processes the sale as a licensed dealer. That is its stated model—not independent proof that it prevents fraud or that every transaction goes smoothly.
Why private-party car sales are difficult to digitize
A buyer and seller can agree on a price without having an easy way to complete the exchange. They still need to establish who they are, confirm the seller can transfer ownership, arrange payment, complete sale documents and follow the right title process. Cash and checks leave the parties to manage much of that coordination themselves; a payment app alone does not resolve title, lien or ownership questions.
KeySavvy’s pitch is to bring those pieces together. Its website says it acts as a licensed dealer for the transaction, rather than only moving money between buyer and seller. That distinction is central to the product: the company describes a combined payment and paperwork workflow, not simply an online listing or payment tool.
How KeySavvy says a transaction works
- The seller adds the vehicle. KeySavvy says it checks the seller’s legal ownership using third-party identity technology, public records, seller-provided information and DMV records.
- The buyer pays online. The buyer completes identity verification and submits payment through the platform.
- Both parties sign the bill of sale. KeySavvy says it prepares an electronic bill of sale for the parties to e-sign.
- KeySavvy processes the sale and payment. The company says it processes the vehicle sale as a dealer and transfers payment as part of the transaction.
- The parties follow title and delivery instructions. KeySavvy says it provides title instructions and temporary permits, and checks for loans or liens that could prevent registration.
KeySavvy estimates that general verification takes 15–30 minutes during business hours. That is the company’s estimate, not an independently measured service guarantee; lender coordination and bank processing may take longer. The company says the vehicle needs a U.S. title and the buyer needs a U.S. address for title delivery.

What the service costs
As listed on KeySavvy’s website, reviewed October 8, 2026, the transaction fee is $99 for the buyer and $99 for the seller. The parties can split those fees or have one party pay both. When a seller needs a loan payoff, KeySavvy lists an additional $99 seller fee.
Fees and terms can change, so confirm the current amount and who will pay before starting a transaction.

What KeySavvy’s workflow does—and does not—establish
The company describes identity and ownership checks, payment handling, sale documents and title guidance. Those are useful transaction safeguards to consider, but the published descriptions do not independently establish how accurately the checks identify fraud, how often transactions encounter problems, or how much fraud the service prevents.
Nor is this a vehicle inspection. KeySavvy’s FAQ says buyers can purchase additional vehicle-history reports directly from CARFAX or AutoCheck. A history report and title workflow do not establish a car’s current mechanical condition; a buyer still needs to decide whether to arrange an independent inspection and review the vehicle’s history.

How KeySavvy fits among other private-sale platforms
Other services describe overlapping but not identical digital workflows. Caramel says its process includes identity checks, financing, an optional protection plan, insurance, payment and document signatures. PrivateAuto describes identity verification, in-app offers and chat, an electronic bill of sale, payment transfer and title-transfer guidance. These are each company’s descriptions, not an independent comparison or evidence that their protections are equivalent.
When comparing platforms, look beyond whether payment happens online. Check who verifies identity and ownership, whether liens and loan payoff are addressed, how and when funds move, who prepares sale documents and title instructions, what fees apply, whether financing or out-of-state transactions are supported, and what remains your responsibility—especially assessing the car’s condition.

Why the startup attracted attention
GeekWire reported on November 21, 2024, that KeySavvy raised $4.25 million. The story also reported the company’s claim of 5× revenue growth over the preceding year; it did not state the underlying revenue, so the figure cannot be translated into a dollar amount. GeekWire named Cars & Bids, AutoCheck by Experian and Hemmings as newly announced partners at the time.
CEO and co-founder Andrew Crowell described the funding as “a key step towards our vision of replacing cash and checks with a safer, simpler way to transact vehicles private party,” according to GeekWire’s account of the company’s statement. The quote captures the ambition, but the funding and reported growth do not by themselves demonstrate transaction safety or service performance.
