The report also described a more optimistic long-term possibility: Tesla might eventually collect more in fare-share revenue over a Robotaxi’s lifetime than it earns by selling a conventional electric car. Those were modeled outcomes, not Tesla’s public forecast or evidence of realized losses.
What the reported analysis said
The Information reported that Tesla studies found Robotaxi economics could be difficult in the near term, even while modeling substantial lifetime fare revenue. Electrek summarized the reporting and its figures in 2025; the accessible account does not provide the complete model or its sensitivity analysis.
The reported model considered individual buyers and fleet operators, ride-sharing use, consumers moving away from car ownership, Tesla’s share of fares, competition, costs, and regulatory conditions in different countries. Its projections depended on assumptions rather than observed market outcomes.
Market size and utilization assumptions
In one high-utilization scenario, the analysis reportedly assumed Robotaxis could be used five times as much as conventional cars. The account said that scenario would reduce annual U.S. vehicle demand from 15 million to roughly 3 million. After allowing for consumers who would not switch to self-driving transportation, the reported estimate was about one million self-driving vehicles a year.

#1 Best Overall
The analysis reportedly judged that replacing Tesla’s roughly 600,000 annual U.S. vehicle sales with Robotaxi sales would be difficult. These figures are estimates attributed to the internal work—not measured demand, Tesla sales results, or an independently verified market forecast.
Fare share is not profit
The reported model put a Robotaxi’s sale price at $20,000 to $25,000 and said Tesla could receive up to three times that amount over the vehicle’s lifetime through its share of fares. That is a projected gross revenue stream, not a profit estimate. The account also said the analysis included capital and operating expenses, charging stations, and parking depots, but it does not disclose enough detail to calculate margins or determine when, or whether, the fare revenue would exceed those costs.

What Musk reportedly decided
According to The Information’s sources, senior Tesla executives argued for pursuing both Robotaxi and a lower-priced car that customers could drive themselves. The report said Elon Musk rejected the analysis, approved the Cybercab, and abandoned the planned $25,000 conventional EV in favor of less expensive versions of the Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla has not publicly confirmed the internal meeting or the analysis as described in the reporting.
Electrek quoted Musk in October 2024 dismissing the idea of a regular $25,000 model: “I think having a regular $25,000 model is pointless. Yeah. It would be silly. Like, it’ll be completely at odds with what we believe.” The remark expresses his position on the conventional car; it does not establish the financial case for Robotaxi.

Electrek also quoted Rohan Patel, identified in its report as Tesla’s head of business development and policy, describing the expected economics and international challenge: “We had lots of modeling that showed the payback around FSD [Full Self Driving] and Robotaxi was going to be slow. It was going to be choppy. It was going to be very, very hard outside of the U.S., given the regulatory environment or lack of regulatory environment.” An unnamed source familiar with the internal analysis was quoted as saying, “There is ultimately a saturation of people who want to be ferried around in somebody else’s car.”
What Tesla’s later disclosures show—and don’t show
Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q says its Robotaxi service launched in June 2025 and continued to expand and be refined. It also says Cybercab production began in the first half of 2026. The filing describes supporting infrastructure for cleaning, maintenance, charging, security, teleoperations, and fleet management, and says Tesla will work to improve safety and profitability as it scales. It does not report Robotaxi segment profitability.

In July 2026, TechCrunch reported that paid Robotaxi miles fell from approximately 1.1 million in Q1 2026 to 700,000 in Q2, a decline of about 36%, even as Tesla expanded into cities in Texas and Florida. TechCrunch also reported Musk saying Tesla needed driving data specific to Cybercab before putting many of the vehicles on roads. Mileage is a measure of service use, not a direct measure of revenue, costs, or profit; the decline alone cannot establish whether the business is succeeding or losing money.

The reported internal case and Tesla’s public account answer different questions. The former, as relayed by The Information and Electrek, describes modeled economics and risks. Tesla’s filing documents rollout activity, production, and infrastructure, but does not disclose the segment-level results needed to test the forecast. The reported fare-share opportunity and the warning about years of losses can both be true: a large lifetime revenue stream does not guarantee attractive margins, particularly when fleet operation and dedicated infrastructure must be funded.

As of Tesla’s Q2 2026 filing and the July 2026 mileage report, the public evidence establishes that the service is operating and Cybercab production has started; it does not establish that Robotaxi is profitable, or that the reported internal forecast has been borne out. The original internal model and a complete account of its assumptions are not publicly available in the cited reporting.
